Issue with old shinobi is just that, the ranged attacks being so janky. Either Shinobi carries teamfights and ganks, or is completely useless. He had no offence, which basically meant that to a good player, he couldnt get a hit in, esp a problem in 1v1s. It's why defensive characters are getting reworks to be more offensive. Shinobi was a relic of the past that went for so long with very little being done aside from spot nerfs here and there. Sure, he doesnt have the ranged options any more, but he does have a much better offense and mixup game, and he still has some of the best mobility combined with that, not to mention Sickle Rain still being a great ganking tool, with better ways to confirm a hit (It being an unblockable/undodgeable mixup now). A thing to keep in mind with videos like this is that they showcase the character when they work, when things go good, but not so much the rest of it, where it's bad or boring.

@@Mellewad if hes only "pretty good" but has only 1 or 2 main combos and is not unique or as fun to play whats the point. With old shenobi you made your own combos and tricks, there was complexity there that made it worth it.
Um new shinobi was banned from comp because of how strong he is, wdym he's weaker. Old shinobi was the worst character in the game with 0 unreactable mixups and his ranged heavys did 20 damage and were slow AND guaranteed a knockdown on parry.
I don’t get why they got rid of the ranged attacks. Like, he’s supposed to be annoying. That’s a core part of the character. It’s like getting rid of highlanders stance
Shinobi used to be so much better compared to the cancer we have now. I remember how Nova King used to be the peak performance Shinobi, the entire reason I subscribed to his channel.
Most of these people here in the comment section that say they “miss him” are the same ones that complained about him being annoying, and in which he should be nerf’d (at the time he still had ranged gb and heavy). Now look where y’all got him today :/ are you guys happy now?
Surprised a lot a people are trying to defend pre-rework like it wasn't the same hero and playerbase that sits in the back poking you at max range, killing you at ladders, and getting some extremely forgiving I-frames. The hero was more of a menace then Gryphon on release and Orochi's fresh rework
Erm old shinobis lack of I frame was a large talking point. He also died to three heavys. Had no unreactable mixups and his ranged heavys were slow only did 20 damage and guaranteed a knockdown on parry. His only saving grace was that he could murder ladder campers which definitely deserved it running away from a shinobi.
@@In-Nihilum His lack of I-frames doesn't matter when he had back dodges(wasn't nerfed), dashes that allow him to dodge backward. His attacks naturally out-ranged his opponents. A lot of heroes died in just 4 hits. Back then, even the tanky heroes would be killed in about 5-6 heavies. I'm pretty sure back then it was because of their defensive feat/perk that made them eat more damage. It was about a 30hp difference and between assassins, it was a 10hp difference. No one had unreactable mixups back then and his ranged heavies had no place in the game. Shinobi would play like a mosquito with malaria. Constantly sitting in the back and tapping your hp every time you tried to retaliate. You couldn't fight back since he was too far to target swap unless you unlocked and lock to him. He also had the option to GB you, letting him environmentally kill you or pin you for 30 damage + ally guaranteed 30 damage. He was the last hero to get his sickle pin nerfed. By nerfed I mean the pin could have you in place until the animation of the attack ended, just 1 ally could rack up 80 damage before you were freed. No one could stop Shinobi if he decided to run away or spam the unlocked leg swipe mixup. It was as annoying as Warlord/Raider charge + GB mixup. "His only saving grace was that he could murder ladder campers which definitely deserved it running away from a shinobi" There are feats + its damn near impossible to run from Shinobi. Even if he was OOS, he could chase you. Ladder campers? This is the hero that would camp ladders with his stealth feats and would kill anyone on ziplines.
@@midgard9057 actually right before shinobi's buff every hero except for shinobi not only had more health but did infact have unreactable mixups(except nuxia lol even some console players can react to the traps). Nobushi also got a rework right before which gave her an undogable heavy/kick mixup which classifys I guess as only the top few players could react to it. Shinobi was the only character left and while people said he was anoying almost everyone agreed he was also ass. He was unplayable in duels and was easy to punish. The only place he shined was feeding revenge off screen and knocking people off ladders. Yes he still died to 3 heavys post CCU he was the lowest hp character at 105 hp. Sorry you were somehow bad enough to not react to his slow ass ranged heavys and his neutral lights. Also his lack of I frame's ment a lot. It was very easy to light him out of his dodge spam and his flip and you could gb him out of his dodge attack unlike today. Funny enough you could usely heavy instead of gb and still catch him out of his shit dodge.
@@In-Nihilum I'll break this down on each of your points: "actually right before shinobi's buff every hero except for shinobi not only had more health "but did infact have unreactable mixups(except nuxia lol even some console players can react to the traps)." Do you know what an unreactable mixup is? Are trying to say unblockable? the 50/50s? The majority of the heroes didn't have unreactable moves. This is why people hated a select few heroes(ex. pre-nerf Gryphon neutral bash and kick). Unreactable = impossible to react to. bashes and follow-up bashes/sweeps/mixups were reactable and still are to this day. There are only a handful of unreactable heroes and they are mostly newly released heroes. "Nobushi also got a rework right before which gave her an undogable heavy/kick mixup which classifys I guess as only the top few players could react to it." So reactable... A regular mixup doesn't apply as unreactable if someone is able to react to their animation. Again, if you can see it and press the dodge button or realize you don't need to dodge, then that's reactable. If you see the bash in its first frame and press dodge but still get hit, it's unreactable. "The only place he shined was feeding revenge off screen and knocking people off ladders." For a loonnngg time, his pins guaranteed a kill... When Shugoki, Raider, Cent, Shaman, Valk, etc, had pins removed, Shinboi still had it. It was a guaranteed kill. if I remember correctly, you couldn't even use revenge which is why it was stupid. He would off-screen, snipe you on uneven ground so he would be safe even if you counter gb'd or parried. "Yes he still died to 3 heavys post CCU he was the lowest hp character at 105 hp." Post-CCU heavies were like 30-40 damage (50 or 55 for some with revenge). Let's do the math of 35 damage. 35x3 = 105. Shinobi dies. 35x4 = 140. Everyone except Shugoki and Lawbringer dies. Then the damage was heavily nerfed and everyone got a balancing of health pool. If the took more than that it was due to feats and perks. His hp was indeed the lowest even compared to assassins and some hybrids, they only had about 10 more hp (a light attack worth).
And now he's fun to play as, against, and is viable 😄 maybe stop complaining because you're low rep and didn't face people capable of counting his terrible kit
@@zacktheslayer6564 Viable nowadays just means has a easy boring mixup and is snoozefest to play against. At least he had some personality and originality, now hes just a orochi affera hybrid and is less fun than both.
@@zacktheslayer6564 Remove "fun to play against" and you're right. Almost every single hero they've reworked completely ruin the identity of the character in order to make them viable
@shro0mpy not almost every, but I can understand a few atleast. You can't have every character be extremely unique and still be viable in every situation
@zacktheslayer6564 Yes, but there becomes a point where they have to choose between fun and viable, and fun is the preferred option for everyone who doesn't hate themselves. Now besides Shinobi's double dodge, and i guess they're out of the ordinary deflect, they really aren't that interesting anymore, and you usually just end up using just about the same undodgable/kick mix-up the entire time.

@@In-Nihilum no no no he was definitely op. S tier for sure
@@Mellewad lol
I got so good at parries with those ranged attacks so I could squish those nats
I do kinda miss have the ranged attacks, but I am happy with what he is now to.
I loved the old Shinobu.
I don’t get why they got rid of the ranged attacks. Like, he’s supposed to be annoying. That’s a core part of the character. It’s like getting rid of highlanders stance
I mean ranged gb had no indicator and it held u down for huge amounts of damage, but the ranged heavies were fine
Apart from the external ranged attacks shinobi was cool. Although external ranged gb was funny
Somehow healthier for the game than his current iteration
Shinobi used to be so much better compared to the cancer we have now. I remember how Nova King used to be the peak performance Shinobi, the entire reason I subscribed to his channel.
Ngl I kinda miss the ranged attack, made you feel more like scorpion
Most of these people here in the comment section that say they “miss him” are the same ones that complained about him being annoying, and in which he should be nerf’d (at the time he still had ranged gb and heavy). Now look where y’all got him today :/ are you guys happy now?
skill cap was wayyy higher with old shino
"His only saving grace was that he could murder ladder campers which definitely deserved it running away from a shinobi"
There are feats + its damn near impossible to run from Shinobi. Even if he was OOS, he could chase you. Ladder campers? This is the hero that would camp ladders with his stealth feats and would kill anyone on ziplines.
@@In-Nihilum It was undisputed that Shinobi was an annoying hero that had no place in the game. Been said for years.
@@In-Nihilum I'll break this down on each of your points:
"actually right before shinobi's buff every hero except for shinobi not only had more health "but did infact have unreactable mixups(except nuxia lol even some console players can react to the traps)."
Do you know what an unreactable mixup is? Are trying to say unblockable? the 50/50s? The majority of the heroes didn't have unreactable moves. This is why people hated a select few heroes(ex. pre-nerf Gryphon neutral bash and kick). Unreactable = impossible to react to. bashes and follow-up bashes/sweeps/mixups were reactable and still are to this day. There are only a handful of unreactable heroes and they are mostly newly released heroes.
"Nobushi also got a rework right before which gave her an undogable heavy/kick mixup which classifys I guess as only the top few players could react to it."
So reactable... A regular mixup doesn't apply as unreactable if someone is able to react to their animation. Again, if you can see it and press the dodge button or realize you don't need to dodge, then that's reactable. If you see the bash in its first frame and press dodge but still get hit, it's unreactable.
"The only place he shined was feeding revenge off screen and knocking people off ladders."
For a loonnngg time, his pins guaranteed a kill...
"Yes he still died to 3 heavys post CCU he was the lowest hp character at 105 hp."
Post-CCU heavies were like 30-40 damage (50 or 55 for some with revenge).
This should be titled "remember when shinobi was a fun character?"
He was so much more fun to play as and against before the rework.
3:28 get over here...(Mortal Kombat fans know...)
Remember when he had like 2 bars of health
Miss old shinobi I don’t care how much I got ganked I miss it😢😢
All the people that played ranged shinobi were worse than the orochi players.
Not only was Shinobi great stamina management was a thing like a real fight
