FINALLY...a real TRADITIONAL Mint Julep!!! I’ve grown to love and appreciate Brandy and Cognacs in cocktails for its irreplaceable depth and character. This goes all the way back to the 900’s (that’s right, YEAR 900), fifteenth-century latin translations and 1600’s. While in the 1700’s we see a shift. It is understood that a Julep could also refer to as the drink we know today. So whether or not these guys were just having a good time with booze and referencing the Julep to ease their ailment, well we will never really know. What we do know is that this is technically the first recorded cocktail in American history, not the Old Fashioned or Sazerac, which is why it is so boldly referenced that the Mint Julep is the TRUE American Cocktail here in the states. What we also know is that the base was somewhat flexible back then, changing between Gin, Rum and Cognac, but by 1775, it was clear that Brandy/Cognac was the true spirit of the Julep.
I only have a cheap cognac and Martell VSOP but I'll deffo give this a go. I think it's important to emphasise that you need to use a rich sugar syrup (2:1) instead of simple syrup coz that's where I was going wrong with my Mojitos.
You don’t NEED to. It’s just a different amount you’ll need in your cocktail that all. It’ll weighed properly, 15ml of 2:1 will be 30ml of 1:1. Like for example ODK Syrups are actually 3:1 and 4:1. With more Flavour… Hence not as sweet. (As in 2 of that will be flavour/Juice). That’s why we always say adjust to taste. 👍
