  • One thing that I was most excited about when getting a slab saw for lapidary was cutting open Lake Superior Agates! Ever since starting rockhounding I was interested in lapidary and this slab saw is my first tool where I FINALLY get to cut open some of the beautiful gems I've been waiting over two years to cut! I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it!

The range of emotions on the second agate! It was an emotional rollercoaster haha! I think it was still a fun reveal and just adds to fact that you never know what you'll get until you cut them!

I'm glad you got one in the end. Each cut built up the tension to the final reveal. Agaye eyes, with amethyst, so cool. If you think you cut them the wrong way, go back, turn them and see if the quarter rock is any better. Only one way to learn. Cut, cut, cut. Loved the show and you still have the best sound effects. Keep having fun and don't stop learning. See y'a next time. Lots of smiles heading your way.😊🤗😊😉😆😃😁😎😍🤩😜😛🤤🙃😺🙉👷‍♀️👸🙋‍♀️🙆‍♀️

That first one you cut is a fragmented membrane. The one with the green on the husk is chlorite, I believe. Which is more common on full nodules. The moss agate, if you polish it, the details will really pop, and I bet you will see some small amethyst pockets. From my experience, amethyst is more common in mossy agates.

I recently bought over three pounds of Lake Superior agates and they are my favorites. I got so many beautiful ones, several with purple and even blue and green in them.

For the smaller ones like this, you will get better cuts with the thin sintered blade, the red one that came with the saw. It might be a little slower but gives smoother cuts. That last one made the so-so ones worth it. I won't tell you that you cut the banded agate wrong, because you already know. That's how we learn.

I think a lot of people don't believe me, or the Geologist that studies LSA's, but I read an article where he states that he believes that only about 40% of all LSA's are actually banded. By the time I read it, I believed it, because someone else and I cut open a lot of agates and only like 2 had any bands. People say over and over, ohh that seems like a pretty low number, but most videos like this just proves it to me every time. That being said, I love agates that don't have banding. They are actually more beautiful than a lot of others. Thank you. Good video.
