Hello, I have a question: I see so many teachers count the followers left bonus starting with their left legs from the 1 count, but then with the music they always enter from 3 or 7 from lateral/basics, which I think it is the correct counting, because otherwise we should have swapped the side of lead/follow with respect to the musical phrases, and thought on this?
Hello buddy! Very interesting question!
So first when we are counting the steps without music we normally start with the 1, it’s just usual, but I could start with any of the down beats (1357)
Because on zouk we don’t have to start on the 1! We just have to start on the down beats
So depending on what you are doing before the left bonus the left bonus can start on the 1,3,5 or 7
But your logic is correct
If we start with the lateral the left bonus will start on the 3!

You mean the up beats are at 1 3 5 7? But then the follow start on the right leg on 1, 5 and left for 3, 7 (opposite for leads) , you would come out opposite if you enter from 1, 5 , but you are right it would because it was started that way like you said.
I know Zouk is a lot more free flow but coming from Salsa my brain would be immediately thinking no, and my choreo brain would correct the count for the left bonus to be start from 7- 8& (which you will complete the whole bonus including 2 basic steps in the next phrase)😅
