    I love that 80s soft , smooth ballads weren’t afraid to throw in a freak scorching metal guitar solo. Also surprised he remembers that solo.

      ? It’s improvised and doesn’t really sound like the og solo (except stylistically). That’s the point, isn’t it?

    • @harrykadaras9459

      Exactly. So.many guitar players just play solos that are simply strung together licks, played in rapid succession. His solos are musical and have "feel" because, although Lukather plays some common "licks" to - his playing is way more musical and creative - due to like you said, the phrasing. But he truly is one of those rare guitarists thats so good, playing totally by "feel" that he can spontaneously create something completely unique and amazing, right on on the spot. Love that guy...!

      @@JohnSmith-oe5kxSteve in the interview had some amazing stories about Jeff Pocaro aswell. Like that he would use his drum sticks to make his own clicktrack on Beat It, which is just completely bonkers

    • @JohnSmith-oe5kx
      @JohnSmith-oe5kx 8 місяців тому +5

      @@oliverboisen7475 Yup, I just listened to the track and the drumming is perfect. Which is crazy because although the part is child's play for Porcaro, he had to fit his beat exactly to what was already recorded (the opposite of how it is usually done) and it had not been recorded to a click or fit to a grid (there was no ProTools to correct anything in those days). Hence Porcaro's need to create a "manual click track" to work from. And supposedly he nailed it on the second take! Porcaro's time and feel were unreal.

    This is the style I grew up on. Melodic , with a direction,building on each note. Not super fast , but tastefully done , giving the listener time to absorb the note before moving on and building to a crescendo of fast notes. Not flitting about trying to put too many notes in a bar. Beautifully executed. Wish more people appreciated this style.

    • @soujrnr
      @soujrnr 17 днів тому +1

      I like his style SOOOOO much better than animals like Yngwie Malamute or whatever his name is. Speed does NOT equal talent or the ability to touch the soul like Lukather's playing does. I'm not saying Yngwie isn't talented, but he seems to only have one speed....ludicrous speed. I don't like that.

    He has the same type of timing swagger as say Hendrix or Louis Armstrong. He isn't locked in to a 4/4 mind set. He can drift into 6ths, 12ths or what have you & come back without effort. It gives the effect of him flying over the beat & accidentally doing these impeccable solos. This dude is the King of 80s Radio...more of his solos made it to radio than all the other great lead players of that day. He did quite a few. "Physical" by ONJ is another magnificent display.

    Recently watched your interview with Steve. The man is so humble. The awe with which he speaks about.his teachers, his influences. He doesn't seem to realize he is "one of them".

    Favorite Luke solo is the outro to Greg Lake's "It Hurts" - check it out if you haven't heard it (the solo in the middle of the song is great as well).

      @@donniev8181 It's usually assumed that Gary Moore perfomed that solo since he played on all the other songs on the album. That one is Lukather though - he just wasn't credited.
