I understand what you are saying. The geometry for a successful machine is surprisingly critical. The screw projection and gap govern the pulp quality and I am very happy with 5mm. I studied many UA-cam vids before trying mine (great way to lean) and decided small diameter drum would be a problem. Angle of the plate may be an issue (as you suggest). Other factors include circumferential speed and the weight (head) of apples in the hopper. It's amazing how these machines can sometimes fail!
I made this a long time ago, and I am of the age where the memory is not as clear as it once was.! I think the thing which made the difference with mine was the fact that the shoot is about 2 inches wider than the drum with the screws screwed in, and what I’ve got is a sloping piece of pine inside the plywood you can see this when you look at the video when we look down into the hopper fairly close to the beginning. I think if you were to modify yours you would need to have the ability to
be able to move one side of the shoot further away from the drum and then add that sloping piece what that does is as you can see I think in the video a half chewed Apple can completely fit down beside the drum at that point there is no escape the screws will keep going round taking chunks out of it.

Thats a fantastic piece of homemade kit - people would pay for that craic. Im looking into making something similar myself, no chance would it be anything to the quality of that. well done.
Very skilled metalcrafting and design. Maybe a row of the SS screws in the hopper, along the top of the SS plate, might help against the apples rolling that was mentioned. I like the engine having more power than many would call for. Advantages. Blue ribbon to ya.
great unit, just a liitle suggestion, I cannot see much of a difference with the business end from the one I made, but I do not need any encouragement to any of the apple during the process, Ie I do not need to use the wooden poles/pushers. You have SUCH A GREAT SCRATTER, it might be worth looking at my one and see if there is anything you can use to improve the self feed side of you great machine. search for Apple scratter and cider press..mpg

Thanks for your enthusiasm. I can't measure up because the machine is stored away from home, but very few measurements are critical. The wooden plungers were a workaround because the machine was very reluctant to self feed. This was a disappointment; I made the diameter of the drum as large as I could because I thought this geometry would favour self feeding. If I made another I would leave gaps in the pattern of screws on the drum. Good luck if you decide to build one.
It seems to me the answer would be to have a larger gap, maybe 8mm instead of 5mm. That would also mean backing out all the screws a tad. And also a more abrasive plate to keep the apples from spinning as much. Maybe in your case, so you don't have to rebuild it, just add some screws in the wood just above the plate to keep the apples from tumbling. Very nice workmanship!

From reading "The New Cider Maker's Handbook" by Claude Jolicouer, I think the disappointment you had with needing to use plungers is because the apples can bounce back up. I believe the solution is mainly to alter the design of the box around your drum so that the apples are drawn into a sort of curved funnel which has the drum on one side with gravity, other apples following on and the drum teeth pulling them in. That's my armchair expert understanding of it anyway!
I remember putting the screws in incorrectly in the first place and then just added a few more to fill in the gaps so I had no scientific method sorry but that doesn’t help much. Also if you asked me to go and look at it or anything like that I donated it to a small orchard which was run by a bunch of volunteers and as I was moving to Ohio it wasn’t something which I could easily take
True real question is why a petrol engine in the first place? I would suggest a 200w electric motor would do the job fine. And no - definitely wouldn’t use plywood in food processing.
+BklynRandom In an ideal world I would not have used an IC engine for this reason, but the only viable alternative is an electric motor and this has its associated risks plus the inconvenience of working near a power outlet. The Honda is quite a "clean" engine and the exhaust is directed away from the apples and pomace.
Carbon monoxide apple crusher? Yes it releases carbon monoxide as does your car, lawn mower, and/or how many other things whereby you can't claim being totally disconnected to in some way or another to the release of carbon monoxide. So although he didn't invent the 'perfect' machine for the environment, at least give him some credit for a well-made machine unlike the TOTAL JUNK that china floods everyone's economy with. Me and my husband would be proud to own/use this for crushing our apples to make apple cider that is actually fit to drink unlike the garbage being bottled and sold at our grocery stores!
