Good question. It is actually only necessary to cover 25% of flat spaces to get the sound deadening effect. Many people do cover all the space, but it does add significant weight. And I am trying to keep my build lightweight.
In building out my '20 Promaster I came up with my basic needs for my floor plan and built cheap basic mock ups of 2 by's and OSB and traveled taking note of the changes I wanted. Made changes in the mock ups before the next trip. 4 years later I know what works and am building out in cabinet grade light weight material and aluminum. Ended up with a 16" wide kitchen counter, that was the sweet spot for me.
When you showed us your cardboard model van….. I had to subscribe xxxxx I’m dreaming…. Hunting a van atm, my 1974 coaster died in December she was 50 yrs old, and a part of our family, so many memories
Loving the notebook planning and 5 inch scale. You can overlay your plans with baking paper to play with where things are placed. I'm with you for keeping as much open floor space as possible. The model is fantastic. Yes keep those cabinets narrow for that sense of space and versatile uses. Nice to see the progress with the sound deadening stuff. All so much work, but You'll get there. Fave part was the model you made. So cute. Enjoy!
Keeping it light sounds like it will work really well. Standing up in it will be so nice. You are doing a thorough job as usual. I loved the look you had in your other van, it looked light and airy.
@LadyBugout it sure is. I watched a video of a model house a few days ago, they put their phone camera inside and shot video moving through, gave a great feel for what the design would be like.
My goodnes, Dee. You are definitely thorough. That model you made is brilliant! It's good to watch you do this van work because I can identify with you, as I couldn't with males doing a build, professional help brought in to do most of the work, of even ladies who have been trained with all the equipment and experience. You go girl! Thank you for your research and thoroughness and sharing it with us.
I think that you are really going to love having a home that you can stand up in! I loved the doll house model that you made! You will build a beautiful home that will reflect your beautiful soul!
The little cardboard model is the third best tool you have - after a pencil and a tape measure. Don't just use it for advance planning. Keep it around to the end. Having the model available will save you from many hours of head scratching and bad wood cutting. ("Does this board attach to the side of this other board or does it attach to the top of this other board?") I don't post or comment often. 'Fraid you got me hooked.
I really like the cardboard box model you did. It’s a great visual aid. The actual van build will be a lot of work but I’m sure you’re going to do well.
Hello Dee, I haven't said hello in a bit. I've been watching, just watching from the recliner. It was good to see your smile return,😁 these last few episodes. I will try to keep up and if you get close to me, I will try to come meet and visit you again, Oregon has been a while.👍 Best of luck, keep being you. 🤗
I once watched a walkthrough of a European couples layout is slightly similar to what you want. As their dining turns into a bed, but that area is lifted so that they have plenty of garage space to fit their 2 bicycles, water tank and electrical system. They also have a sky light above their bed so that’s the only access up to the roof deck. So nobody can simply climb up from the outside. And they put storage boxes on the roof with solar panels on it having more equipment to carry. That’s a great idea I think for me
Hi, I have a 20/20 ram ProMaster high top and it's 136 in. It was originally designed for myself and my husband but it's just me now and we used the upper kitchen cabinets from Lowe's as our cabinets. They're just over 12 in and they're perfect.
This is fun to watch! I never thought of doing a tiny cardboard sample. I may have to give that a try too, but I suck at measuring & it probably would be too far from scale! 😅 One day when I grow up (ha), I'll have a van that I can stand up in. Low tops are back killers. I'm looking forward to your progress. 👍
I don’t recall the UA-cam channel but there was a gentleman who used to use cardboard cutouts laying out the actual build to size. It was pretty amazing to watch. Yours was pretty awesome as well. I’m a visual person. I need to see some type of design. I tried sketch up but didn’t find it to be user friendly 😂😂. Dee, if you decide, in the future, to add “upper cabinets” there are “soft sided” cabinets you can use if you need extra storage. Looking forward to watching this build.
How exciting! I love that you have included 2 different ways to sleep once again 😃I am in the early stages of upgrading my 2021 LWB Transit Connect with a little more "build" and conveniences for my upcoming 5-6 month swing around the eastern US. I just took all my measurements yesterday and was thinking I needed graph paper. I like your notebook idea instead so I'll maybe actually be able to FIND all my notes - ha! Thanks Dee for all your sharing!
Love, love, love that the space and lightness matters to you. I think it takes more care and thought to achieve but you have the creativity and skills to do so! Great work!
So glad you found a van that suits you! I like your floor plans. The fold down table is a great idea. I have been trying to find a way to get a table area. Attached to the cabinet I have to use.
Hi Dee. Just wanted to say something I saw on another van life channel ( can’t remember which one so thank you to this channel)! They used IKEA kids furniture in their small van space. Thought it was brilliant! Kids furniture is small, compact and built to be sturdy but light weight. Looking forward to this van build. Great work! ❤❤❤❤
I like your idea of keeping the space open and lightweight as possible. Between the cab and back area, think about a curtain as a barrier or lightweight door. You’re making good progress so keep pushing and enjoy! 😎
Thanks for the encouragement! It's definitely a lot of work, but fun work. Yes, I will be putting a divider but am also trying to keep that lightweight as much as possible.
Thank you, I am going to build my van out and anxiously awaiting your videos, lol. Love all of your ideas in the red van and can’t wait to see this van. The diorama was genius!!! ‘
👋🏽 Hi Dee 🥰 Everything looks Great! And you seem to be humming right aLong 👍🏽 So Proud of You!! I was feeling kinda blue and then I tuned in to watch your video. I feel much better now thinking about the Wonderful Day when perhaps I’ll be able to achieve something similar to what you have. It certainly looks like a LOT of Work 😂 but then I think to myself What a Blessing 🙏🏽 💟 I imagine in the near future when I’ll be working on my rig 🚐 that I’ll have that much more time to Ponder on Spiritual things and how I can better Serve my community. Thanks for the Inspiration 🥰 See ya next time 🤗
So glad you enjoyed the video and that it helped you feel better. It's amazing how a being involved in a project (any project really) can bring so much clarity and perspective.
Thank you for sharing the design process. I used a scale size model for my tiny house design. Just a thought… when sleeping in a van the sound of the rain on the roof can be overwhelming, very different to rain on a house roof. I would definitely be adding to my future van build. Can wait for the next episode 😊
Hi Dee it's Tony it's been awhile since I've have commented you but I would like to say that you should switch the tall cabinet and the ottoman goes with the tall cabinet it will block the view out the door congratulations with your new van and I wish you the best building it I will watch the videos as you do it be safe take care of yourself and may God bless you
I love these build videos!! I made a scale drawing of my van build ideas too using graph paper. I even made my furniture to scale and cut them out so that I could move them around the van to see what layout works best. I love the 3D cardboard model! I am so excited to see this build. You have so many unique ideas!!
Dee, I don't feel like a maniac now after seeing your process because I, too, make scale drawings and 3D models before I build, or even remodel! Perfectionists, UNITE! 🤣 I had an opportunity to pick up the same sound deadening "tar" last week (50% off) but, wasn't aware of it's benefit of installing in my van, so, unfortunately passed on the deal. I know better next time, thanks to you! You and I are beginning our builds at the same time, so, I'm going to be watching your channel like a hawk! Keep up the good work! It's great seeing your progress and learning from your experience! Thanks!!!
I believe everything happens for a reason. Sometimes you have to give up something you love in order to make room for something you will love even more. Congratulations and happy building.
Oh Dee!! You are taking me down memory lane!! I've kept my 'scribble" pages. So much planning involved, yes??!! Yay for the asphalt stuff!! I remember driving my van home when I first got it and I drove over some gravel. I could have sworn someone was shooting at me as those rocks banged around in the wheel wells!! It was so LOUD!! After I put on the Killmat it immediately changed the feel of the van as I was driving. So worth it. That was almost 3 years ago so it's making me grin from ear to ear watching you do all the same stuff I did. It's helping me to remember how much I have invested in my tiny home on wheels. I'm loving this!!! Love your design ideas and I'm sure they're going to work out well for you and I'm excited to see it become reality. Eagerly looking forward to MORE!!!!
I know it's hard work for you, but these build out videos are super fun and informative! I love that I'm here to start your new adventure with your new van!
Great start on the new van build out. Im getting ready to do the same thing next month, right now we are expecting more snow and I'm working outside. Can't wait to see more of your build.
It 's so good to see you back in Lady Bugout! I absolutely love watching you build your new "Adventuremobile"! I can't wait to see you out on the road again, Dee 😄
LOL I did Autocad3D for years and opted for spiral notebooks. I had a pocket sized on me at all times and a standard sized for planning every cut. My DYI solar generator took pages. My layout took pages. So many iterations of various things. It was truly the way to go. P.S. I’ll help.
I enjoy hearing your thoughts on your design process. Your rig is gonna be sooooo cool! Love your practical cardboard mockup you made... I did the same with graph paper and tape. Got my insulation finished a few days ago and just wait until you hear the difference in your cargo space when you get yours in - even hearing your own voice in there seems weird at first. Keep up the great work!
@@LadyBugout 💯In preparation for Jan/Feb meetups, over the last few days I've powered through the MaxxFan install, roof solar hookup, wiring and lighting, and refrigerator. All of it DC powered. I had to sit in there at the end of the day and just take it all in.
Perhaps, have swivel seats which can be used for dining, also, your fixed windows could be operable & crank open for fresh air even when it's raining & please don't cut through your roof for a fan, etc.. I absolutely love your simple, cozy style.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your progress. Just bought myself a 159 wheel base high top last month, but haven't been able to do much with it yet due to the cold weather. About all I've been able to do is put in swivel seats and install a rearview camera. Having to wait for a few more months to even get started is driving me nuts. lol
Very nice! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who needs to be doing something meaningful to feel like I'm making steady progress, especially in the middle of the night, in the middle of Winter, when I often have the most ideas to test out & can't just run out & take extra measurements or see how my ideas will come together. Your ideas are fabulous! I have lots of extra boxes so while I wait I could actually make a realistic replica inside the house & go from there! My project won't begin until Spring & all I have now is time to ruminate! Lol. Thanks for the inspiration. You have great taste!
It's 1:00 AM, mid-January, freezing cold outside, and too early to start my indoor vegetable seedings! I need to plan projects, create lists, compile supplies or, finally build to feel like I'm making the most of every waking hour, too! (And, it's a lot more fun than unloading the dishwasher!) I think I'm in good company!
I like how you made little model out of cardboard it was a great visual of what the designs your going for. Looks like it will be cozy with space to stand up. Love it.
This is helpful to see. Showing your ideas, scale sketches, mock ups. Is that product for sound deadening? Just a bit on the walls works? I'm a little confused on this step. Thank you for taking us along step by step.
I've been researching lightweight material as an alternative and just landed on The Van Teacher channel. He's using aluminium and I read the comments only to find out that lightweight birch plywood is about the same weight as aluminium, unless it's a specific grade of aluminium. Probably birch is easier to cut too. Hmmm. I priced out Aluminium shop shelves for work vans and they are pricey. So I'll likely attempt to build my own stuff with birch plywood. Except for the walls... that will be pvc I think. I haven't gotten that far yet. Like you said, stay focused on the moment but still dream about the fun stuff.
I use a $1.49 ‘think pad’ for my projects as well, works great! As for the roof, you’re right. The corrugations add a lot of rigidity so that the roof doesn’t vibrate like a bass drum. Keep ‘‘em coming Dee, you’ve got my attention. So does the van build…😂😂😂
I really appreciate your feedback. It helps me a lot because some people think I’m not thinking things through properly and don’t have any idea about what I’m saying. And I actually do know a little bit 😝
Curious: what’s the thinking behind putting small squares of sound deadening material on each wall instead of covering the entire wall?
Good question. It is actually only necessary to cover 25% of flat spaces to get the sound deadening effect. Many people do cover all the space, but it does add significant weight. And I am trying to keep my build lightweight.
Hi Dee. Thankyou for showing the background building up to the more fun things. Love your videos 🚐❤️
Another great video ❤ x
Which climate is your van located most of the year a wet humid one hot n dry or texas all the above
@@LadyBugout interesting!! Who da thunked it??!!
The 3D box idea is ingenious! It definitely helps putting vision into something pliable. Will 100% take inspiration for my future build. 🤩

I loved the model, I've done this often and cut out pieces of paper to scale fir furnishings in a house too. Really helps only doing things once.

Constructing a diorama of the inside is a great idea! You can make several versions and decide what you would like the best!!Excellent!!!
It definitely helps with visualizing the space! 😊
Awesome eager for the next video
Thanks so much for watching! More to come!
Very cool. I like your eye for detail. Thanks and see you next time!
Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement 😊
When you said you got Amazon Boxes, I thought you meant you were going to use to scale boxes. LOL and you just did a small version. Great Idea
Right?! 😂 If I had more big boxes I would have!!!
Love your process.
I appreciate that! 🙌🏼
It 's so good to see you back in Lady Bugout! I absolutely love watching you build your new "Adventuremobile"! I can't wait to see you out on the road again, Dee 😄
Yes, it's going to be so fun to get out on the road again!
Excellent Job!
I appreciate it! 😊
LOL I did Autocad3D for years and opted for spiral notebooks. I had a pocket sized on me at all times and a standard sized for planning every cut. My DYI solar generator took pages. My layout took pages. So many iterations of various things. It was truly the way to go. P.S. I’ll help.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses spiral notebooks. ☺️
It's so satisfying to see things take shape!
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll keep them in mind!
I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your progress. Just bought myself a 159 wheel base high top last month, but haven't been able to do much with it yet due to the cold weather. About all I've been able to do is put in swivel seats and install a rearview camera. Having to wait for a few more months to even get started is driving me nuts. lol
I know what you mean. It's tough to be patient when you're ready to get started! I am running into weather stalls as well.😝
You are so energetic Dee blessings ❤
Thank you and same to you 🙌🏼
I totally understand that feeling-sometimes you just gotta get creative with what you’ve got! 🤪
Have fun and don't over think !
Yes!!!🙌🏼
You are doing a great job! I've been looking forward to you doing this! So excited for you and glad to see you smiling!!! Blessings to you!
I appreciate that! 🙌🏼💪🏼🤞🏼
I love your Box van layout. Nice New rig. Dee what year is the Ram?
Thank you. It’s a 2020
I am grateful. For you. You keep my mind busy with all kinds of stuff I could improve on. Thank you. Good luck on the build. U r doing great
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the encouragement! 😊
I like the pen and papeŕ version g8 job Dee
Thank you ☺️
I like how you made little model out of cardboard it was a great visual of what the designs your going for. Looks like it will be cozy with space to stand up. Love it.
Yeah, I hope it will be cozy and functional! 🙏🏼
The cardboard model is a cool idea.I really like the idea of the little fold out table.
Thanks so much! I am trying to keep it simple so I can be flexible and have options!
This is helpful to see. Showing your ideas, scale sketches, mock ups. Is that product for sound deadening? Just a bit on the walls works? I'm a little confused on this step.
Thank you for taking us along step by step.
Yes, it is just for sound deadening. And all you need is to cover 25% of the flat areas to keep the van from sounding tinny or hollow.
It’s always fun to see the great ideas out there. Glad you are looking for what will work well for you!
Fascinating
Thank you!
carboard model great idea
Thanks. It really helps me to visualize.
@@LadyBugout I have a sneaking suspicion that you know more than 'a little bit'. :)
Looking good! I was just telling my husband this week about your channel and how excited i was to see your new van build :o)
I am so glad you're excited about it! It’s fun for me too.
