S300VM - Russian Anti-Ballistic Missile System

S-300VM "Antey-2500" (Russian: С-300ВМ Антеӣ-2500, NATO reporting name SA-23 Gladiator\Giant) is a Russian anti-ballistic missile system. The system is designed to defeat short- and medium-range ballistic missile, aeroballistic, cruise missiles, fixed-wing aircraft, as well as loitering ECM platforms and precision-guided munitions.

The S-300VM was designed against _tactical_ ballistic missiles, but the S-500 and S-550 have been designed against ICBM warheads on their final part of trajectory, and against low orbit satellites.

Having been born in the 1970's, during the 1980's, when nuclear war was still considered a when, not if, much of Soviet weapons technology, aside from certain submarines, aircraft, and other exceptions, was considered a joke ...
To say the Russians have stepped up their capacity, and capabilities, is an understatement. They were already pretty formidable in rocket technology, but especially recently, that a lot of R&D has been spent on making it better ...
I can say that now, more than ever, although going to war with Russia has always been a bad idea, it is an even more frightening prospect ... and I don't say that lightly; any NATO forces, especially the UK/US, intervening in either Syria, and/or in the Ukraine and Crimea, although, in my personal estimation, the Cold War merely went into a deep freeze, there's nothing to say that either/both could easily heat it up again to those same tensions, especially c. 1983-84 ...

they've always had great kit, you were propagandized. t-54 in the 1940s, s-75 & bmp-1 in the 1950s, 9K33 Osa & 2K22 Tunguska in the 1970s, s-300 in the 1980s, even when you thought they sucked they were pushing the envelop & creating entirely novel categories of weapons.

This is an anti-satellite and anti-ballistic missile system
It is not designed to intercept small rocket-propelled grenades such as HIMARS or artillery shells
The missiles are intercepted using the Pantsir system and the Tor M2
As for artillery shells, there is no system currently in the world capable of intercepting an artillery shell
