I hope people realize how historic this piece of video is. The "Ten" album was released just 3 days after this performance. They were literally just touring/promoting the album in their hometown with no idea as to what lied ahead. They're lives completely changed within weeks of this performance.
Seriously only 3 days after? Wow. I was in my second year of high school.
@ Not how I remember it. I started college in the fall of 91. I remember hearing Alive on the radio and running out to buy the album in maybe September or October. Yes, it didn't TOTALLY blow up until the Jeremy video but it was pretty popular before then.
@ Then I must have been cutting edge because I know I bought the CD in the fall of 91. I also remember they stopped making videos after Jeremy. Such a 90's thing to do. Also kind of biting the hand that fed you since it was the Jeremy video that put them in a position to do that. And call me a cynic, but they broke the no video streak in 98 with Do The Evolution. Not sure it's a coincidence that album sales had started to drop from their commercial peak of Ten, Vs. and Vitology.
@ I know. I was there too. But I don't entirely agree. The lack of videos for Vs., Vitology, and No Code probably contributed to their commercial decline. Also--and I love No Code and Yield---but apart from their experimental nature, I think the songs weren't quite as strong as the first three albums. And no matter what they did, they weren't going to remain the top band in the world. Mass popularity is a young person's game--especially when it comes to record sales if not always concert sales. And......no rock band today can ever be as popular again. Rock was once a dominant form of pop music and now it's a niche genre if you're a new band. Pearl Jam were lucky to be part of last wave of rock's mass popularity.
Three days before Ten and under a month before Nevermind and then the whole music world was turned upside down.
While we were still listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Decent few months.
@@mattwarwick8135 YES!!! And of course the Black Album. And also Badmotorfinger and Pretty Hate Machine. And too many others to mention.
God I miss the 90s. For people who weren't around during the 90s let me just say that, yes, it was that great.

2020 ... 30 years later. Unbelievable. Come on everyone who’s still here?! Pearl Jam for life.
Absolutely dude! Pearl Jam for life. Something very special about this band.
What an era to be a part of. Prime Layne, prime Eddie, prime Chris, and prime Kurt.
@@ricosquirts3420Billy Corgan is talented, but I wouldn't include his with these names because his songs lean towards shoegaze or even straight pop at times, a sort of predecessor to emo, and because he had no growling wolf element to his voice as these guys did. Mark Lanegan belonged to that ilk, though, for sure.
I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!
This is why we need time traveling!!!
The Bite of Seattle. I think. Being here for this. Loving the same beautiful women who were there.
Lets start a petition n charity for the research of time machine.and our demand should be,the time machine should atleast be able to go further as 80s n 90s.we dont need more time travelling than that.we will be happy😁
Eddie’s hair deserves a comment section all it’s own...
@@smarkmalark probably age related.. my hair was similar in my 20s and early 30s but it changes lol
I was young in those years. When I see this I remember them and get a feeling of freedom, not because I was young but because there were different times without cell phones, computers, etc. Times with lots of bands where we enjoyed freedom. Today, young people do not know how to walk on the street and talk without a mobile phone. They don't know what they are losing. I'm glad I grew up with bands like this.
It was REAL adventure....not....ohhh week if I fuck up, I'll just call AAA . .....OR 911.....
Great primary source historical document. One camera, no stupid jump cuts every 1.4 seconds by an overcaffeinated video editor trying to show off. Thanks for letting us just watch the band. This piece belongs in the Library of Congress archives. Thank you for sharing it.
I wonder how many of these people knew what they were truly witnessing...
Eddie Vedder sounds EXACTLY like the studio version. wow.
They all did in 90 and 91. Layne, Kurt, Chris and eddie. Constant touring and countless live shows ruin vocals. Fact. Some like plant only got a couple years. Some are lucky and get longer. As 20s go into 50s it's just not doable. Many kudos to Cornell for doing it well most of the time until his death. Same with Ed though Ed never sang with Chris range.
The mark of a band that has WORKED those songs, gone into the studio - and nailed it.
And the A-hole was facing the crowd. No fake angst. No head down BS like he did during the Rockin In The Free World w/Neil Young.
48:31 "hey man, did you get all of that? could I get your address?" - When the World was better
I wonder if he ever got that address.. or if he just waited 22 years for the you tube vid :)
Now bootlegs are just on UA-cam for everyone. No going on a lord of the rings style quest to see a vhs of mudhoney playing a show in 1989 for 16 people.
It's 2023, a 52 year old man sits in his house with his wife and the one remaining child still at home at 17 years old. He thinks, "I was a part of history. This has to be the greatest PJ concert ever. The energy that fades with every live performance they do was there. At its peak. Raw. Electric, like a live wire from the most powerful electric plant the world has seen. I was there. I shook my head like a Peacock trying to show its feathers so my tiny pony tail, poking out of my black hat, would flap in the wind to attract a chick in a flannel, and yellow construction boots, experiencing herself a part of history. Na, I keep my mouth shut and hope they never see me nearly touching greatness..."

@miguellucero No! I was just musing on what that guy has to be thinking if he sees this vid.
Ten came out when I was a freshman in high school. Wore the cassette out on the way to school every day all the way on the other side of the country in Wilmington, Delaware. One of the best albums of the 90s if not the best.
The fact that State of Love and Trust didn't make it onto Ten continues to blow my mind over 20 years later.
What about Wash only making it on the European version, never understood any of it.
Doesn't really surprise me, State of Love and Trust is kind of a generic rocker, doesn't really fit on Ten
This was what in the 90s we recognized as a tight snare drum.
Most songs a little faster than on the record but that snare keeps it all together.
No computers, no samples, no lightmixer, just pure r'n'r 🤩.

What I love is that neither the band nor the audience had any idea on that day how big this was going to get a short time later

They are former Mother Love Bone members. The audience knew this much and would have had higher than usual expectations for this band.

Lived in Seattle from 92-2018. My best friend worked at Bad Animals recording studio and worked with all the great bands in the 90's. We met up with Stone in Pioneer Square one night while out seeing bands and drinking beers. Very cool guy. Met again at Bumpershoot a few days later. Fun fact, the band I was in played this stage (mural Amphitheater) at Folklife in the late 90's and that's where I met my wife. Yes, the 90's were that cool.
LOL!!! I was at this concert ( the only Black chick there) and so out of my mind...now I can see what I missed while I was there...:)

I didnt get the whole grunge scene at the time but watching it now some thirty years later I realize what a special time it really was in rock history. We're only here for a short time so enjoy it while you can,
I agree. i wasn't into the grunge scene back then, but looking now, they were amazing artists.

These people have no idea what they are witnessing. Just standing there in the front row hearing the songs that formed the foundation of one of the greatest rock bands of all of our lifetimes.
What are they supposed to be doing? Dancing around and bashing into each other like idiots? Screaming in each others ears? You must be one of those annoying cretins at concerts.
Too many Greats out there , It's was awesome and to have seen it ...Thanks
The way Eddie punches the air before Even Flow kicks off, is what keeps me going
Love how during even flow he says “be careful”. :)
Little did these people know in a little over a year Pearl Jam would be on top of the world, this is awesome footage
It's funny how most laid back people in the audience don't realize the greatness of what they are hearing. There's a video of ACDC in Oakland doing a concert and breaking out Highway to Hell before the album dropped and after the song the crowd barely even acknowledged the song. Led Zeppelin also said they got lukewarm responses from the crowds when they did Stairway to Heaven before its release. The best music takes a few listens before an average fan will get it.
Where all the people on tranquilizers at this perfect epic set. They might as well, all have well been reading a book. All can say I wish I was there going totally nuts. So love Pearl Jam they have released a legacy of music period.

I'm pretty sure this was one of the very first "I'm Eddie and I'm starting to climb shit" concerts too - maybe that's why he went higher.
Awesome concert
A lot of it is psychological.. the more people there are creating a "buzz" around something like a song or band, it tends to spread like wildfire.. and more people are willing to take actual time to listen to it and get hooked
There is sooooo much music out there, a lot of great music goes unnoticed, especially nowadays
Bands like Zeppelin, ACDC, Pearl Jam, etc. were lucky to come out when they did IMHO, a lot of has to do with timing as well as talent, there was a lot less technology, clutter, and less competition overall back then
Nevertheless, certain bands were destined for greatness, Pearl Jam being one of them
I think the days of legendary bands like Pearl Jam, Zeppelin, Rush, etc. are over, the music landscape is too saturated because of my technology, there is too much music floating around, most of it being total garbage
I believe this as well. Combo of downer/psychadelics as well as not knowing how to react to what they were seeing onstage as it was new and different. Year later and their crowds were going batshit crazy.
Great show! Missk this dave in the drums. I think that guy with Orange shirt and Black hat took something so strong that hes still shaking his head until today 😅
What the hell is up with that?? I was wondering why he did this lit erally the entire video.
A million thanks to whoever recorded this. ❤ I miss the 90s. 😍 I love this band. 🤘🏻
Can you imagine the wild ride that must have been for Ed? Working at a gas station in San Diego and then just a few months later he is in one of the biggest bands in the world and everyone knows who he is.

I moved to Seattle from LA in 1988 while into alternative rock and new wave and stumbled into this weird music scene called Grunge that was once again proving you can do hard rock with actual melody and meaningful lyrics. Metal for grownups.
This is the best earliest footage I've seen of Pearl Jam. Four days before Ten was even released.

I DUNNO IF PEOPLE CAN JUST IMAGINE BEING HERE BEFORE THEY WERE EVER FAMOUS. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN A DREAM. AND THEY SOUND SO GOOD. AHH.
Omg...what have I just stumbled upon....? This is priceless.
Not many bands are this tight in the beginning.. Vedder's vocals probably 3rd or so best of all time rock.. extraordinary.. One can tell how great a voice is by how much it is imitated..
Great footage.I saw them 12/15/91 in Salt Lake City,UT. at Club DV8.Jeff Ament broke his ankle and their set was shortened
3rd or so best of all time rock? Have you heard Dio, Whitesnake, Dokken, Quiet Riot, Wasp, Mr big, Racer X, kiss, deep purple, Ac dc or Mötley Crüe. Now that is some really good voices. Vedder is okay, he has a goats wiggle vibrato and no stage precence at all. He is not bad but he is certainly not one of the best rock vocalists of all time.
dave played with so much groove.
@@Brett_Nebraska if I remember correctly, his personality wasn't a good match with the rest of the band members
This may be video footage of the first gig with drummer Dave Abbruzzese playing drums. I believe that prior to this day Matt Chamberlain had played only a few gigs. Chamberlain had replaced Dave Krusan who had recorded the album 10 but was in Rehab. Chamberlain was not ready to tour for 10 and was joining another band so suggested his friend Abbruzzese to come join the band. Dave Abbruzzese's own Wikipedia page verifies he played his first gig on the day of this recording. It says he was not committed to joining on his very first gig with the band which was on August 23 1991. By the end of his second show he loved the bad so much that he committed 100%. He finished the tour for the 10 Album and he then recorded mtv unplugged, vs, and Vitalogy with the band.
What an amazing piece of history. Thanks for the upload op. Totally killer bro ❤

Love how everybody is just listening to the music, as opposed to holding up their phones. The person filming this must have had a huge video camera, and was probably the only one doing it.
Yes, the idea of filming a concert on your phone rather than being in the moment and actually enjoying it is very strange. So later it's, "Look at this concert that I filmed"
