Well who knows? It's a new century; maybe a new locomotive will be invented, then the diesels will suffer the pain they put the Steam locomotives through.
@@carterjames8829 there's eletric locomotives. Maybe the next century there will be solar or even atomic locomotives.... Yeah solar locos are much expected
Over decades to today, some people, such as non-profit organizations, have actually been investing in designs for modern, efficient, safe, clean-running and even low-maintenance steam locomotives, some taking inspiration from Argentinian designer and engineer, Livio Dante Porta, who designed the 1949 steam locomotive, the Argentina. Today, we have the Coalition for Sustainable Rail here in the United States, and the Mackwell Locomotive Co. in New Zealand.

Hearing the R Class whistle always makes me cry, & well up with pride.... I love it so much, so loud & haunting, so Victorian !! I love my state, I love the R Class
Great video! I love the opening scene featuring the parallel run with 4204 and B65! Well done! I am SO looking forward to the trip in May 2012 to Bendigo with R711. :-D
These are Australian EMD locos built locally by Clyde Engineering. While they are based on American F units they are lowered and stretched to fit into our smaller loading gauge, plus the second one has two cabs to permit running in either direction. ie: an adaption for local operating requirements.

I'd love to see the line rebuilt through Gippsland places like kurrumburra coal creek, and have an old steam locomotive travel along it. Used to Holliday down at Wilsons pyrometry in the summer.
this sound a bit out there, but I wish there was some alternate universe where there would be a law in place, which would state that if you build a train line, YOU CAN NEVER SHUT IT DOWN! that way people of our generation (Gen Z; 1980-2010) could see all the amazing lines that existed. it would also mean things such as the outer and inner circle lines of Melbourne could be used. both were dismantled just 10 years before they would have hit pay-dirt as freight diversions, and 20 years before hitting pay-dirt as Passenger lines!
The diesels are both GMs built under licence by Clyde Engineering in Sydney. The 42 class dates to mid 1950's and belonged to the new South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) and the B class is former Victorian Railways. Much the same under the skin except the B is double ended and the 42 is single ended with only a hostler control in the #2 end. You should hear the 42's winding up from a standing start with a heavy freight on a rising grade.. music to your ears.
Nice whistle comparison!! New South Wales RR shop-made 5-chime vs new-cast Nathan P12345 horn. The horn is louder (directional) but the whistle blows the horn away in prettiness!! The whistle is not a Nathan...those blow GBDEG, above middle -C. I love seeing that engine running fast on the straights...There's nothing like big steam!!
If I remember right, there’s a video of the driver’s perspective (from inside the diesel) of the parallel run somewhere on youtube. Next time I find it, I’ll link it in the comments

Man, Australian railroads are like the perfect combo of British and American equipment!
i know burning coal is bad for the environment and everything but Steam engines have so much more character than modern locomotives.
Well then run them on charcoal and you won't have that problem. As it turns out steam engines are not very picky about their choice of fuels.
In actuality it's very good for the environment.
I know it is so cool seeing history

What a superb side by side comparison, a Steam and Early Diesel Electric Locomotive. You don't and won't see that too often.
