Esther is one of the most twisted horror villains ever the actress who played her played the heck out of the role.
For sure and she not even a supernatural killer
She did!!!! She did great in the prequel too!!
She IS Ester. lol Yeah she creeped me out when the first one came out for sure.
As an Estonian person, I can say that Esther’s actor does incredible job with the accent!!
The actress who played her is part Russian.
@@Winchester-7 nationality has nothing to do with ethnicity. Her mother is Russian and emigrated from Moscow, it’s pretty safe to assume she learned the language at a young age.
@@jenkins1 I agree! The Estonian accent is pretty clumsy but somehow the language is beautiful
@@jenkins1Oi see vottis mul kaua aega et aru saada et sa oled eestlane
Besides the twist in the end, the most memorable and disturbing parts of Orphan for me are all that happens to the son. Holy crap, was he put through the ringer!
“You piss yourself”
It’s wringer, but yes!
The most disturbing part for me was the nightmare scene at the very beginning… OMG! 😵😧😟
@@jenkins1 ok, but can you blame him after they learned the real truth at the end??? Ester was evil from the getgo, she was passing herself off as a child but was really an adult and was trying to seduce all the fathers that adopted her. So while the son might’ve been mean, Ester was the real evil one all along
Yes... but I feel like Max was the worst done here(for people who didn't die) because she saw everything. Absolutely EVERYTHING.
Definitely one of my favorite horror films ever Esther is definitely an underrated villain and I love how intense and how much chills I got while Esther’s twist was being revealed while she was showing rage and messing up her makeup in the room plus the paintings she had was crazy
When I watched this I was so surprised not many people talk about it it’s so good and Isabelle’s performance is amazing and I think she deserves a lot of praise for this movie
I love when she pushed that bully kid off of the slide and she broke her leg. Serves her right… little brat lol
This movie is a gem,it's one of the few times that I really didn't see the twist ending coming. Esther is an horror icon as far as I'm concerned.
I always hated the dad in here but I was cracking up at your portrayal of him lol. I love this review, it's so dead on and makes me appreciate Vera and Isabelle so much more.
I actually really love how there’s the very small details in the movie about Ester’s reluctance for going to the dentist, wearing Jeans, why she wanted the door locked, and why she wanted the mom gone from the house. I think that lead to such a totally awesome buildup! This movie was mad underrated for sure.
Why couldn’t she wear the jeans?
@@EnchantedTooWell I assume because it would reveal a figure too mature for her supposed age?
Absolutely love this film. The performances, the twist, the suspense, etc. Esther is definitely one of the most underrated horror villains ever
100%
Please don’t say “underrated!” That word IS SO OVERUSED not to mention falsely used. People say that things are underrated when they’re really not so much that it’s beyond ridiculous and annoying. “Underrated” has totally lost it’s meaning because people misuse it so much. We don’t even know what is and isn’t actually underrated anymore
@@nsasupporter7557 This is a very underrated post!
@@kinglicks5646 so is my foot up your a** 😮😉
@@nsasupporter7557 underrated comment tbh
I agree with you, Cody. Isabelle Fuhrman gave an absolutely brilliant performance in this movie.
I saw this at the cinema when it first came out. People who had to take a toilet break were literally running up and down the stairs from their seat so they would miss as little as possible. When the reveal came, you could see multiple jaws hitting the floor in stunned silence. (Have you seen the killer kid movie "Mikey"? I remember that being quite violent.)
The original ORPHAN deserves all the praise. So glad you got to talk about it here.
And from what I understand when Dead Meat did their Kill Count of Orphan last week, Daniel in the original script died. It is a kind of shame they changed that because not only did he annoy me during the movie, it would have been a really creative kill. But anyways, did enjoy this and looking forward to checking out the prequel. Thank you, Cody.
Daniel is the son?
@@my3rs307Yes.
Isabelle Fuhrman killed this role when she was a child and to have her return to play Esther again after so long is just incredible. She’s def got talent I’ll give her that!
Vera Farmiga is awesome, Isabelle Fuhrman is great. Orphan is definitely underrated, it really is one of my favorite horror movies. Can't wait to see the new one 👏✌️
I first heard about this when Lee from Drumdums was doing a top 10 shocking horror twist endings and had this at number 1, so I quickly paused the video and checked this out and this movie was a hell of a ride and my god Isabelle Fuhrman is fucking incredible in the lead role, one of the best child performances I've ever seen, worried and excited for the sequel.
Definitely an underrated gem that I plan to rewatch ahead of the prequel. Vera Farmiga always delivers, my fave role of here is by far as Norma in Bates Motel. She deserves more recognition for her talent IMO.
I have a fun story to tell: when the orphan first came out my parents where at Korea (their Estonians) they wanted to see orphan, not knowing what the movie is about. They went to theatre and at the part where Esther’s stepmom called to the Saarne institute the Estonian lady picked up the phone in the movie. So literally my parents didn’t know what the movie was about and they were in Korea and then out of blue some lady starts talking Estonian language in the movie! And it’s so fun to listen their experience cuz they were just gonna see a random movie!
The scene of Esther trying to get with the father made me so uncomfortable. I was there like “Ew ew ew”
Cody Leach did you forget about this movie.

Mikey is a 1992 American psychological slasher film directed by Dennis Dimster and written by Jonathan Glassner.[1] It stars Brian Bonsall as Mikey, a young boy adopted by a family, who turns out to be a violent psychopath.
Yup. Went looking for this suggestion. Pretty decent killer kid flick. Brian Bonsall did alright and its effective since he kills people in mostly believable ways.
superb movie. at the time of its release it was pretty heavily criticised for possibility of putting people off adoption. stoked for this prequel. stay up Cody and keep up the great work.
I laughed so hard! You made me laugh so hard with this one when you were talking about the kid at the end. I had flashbacks of the one time I told my mother to shut up. Maaaaan, when I tell you my usually sweet and docile mother teleported out of the kitchen and wrapped her hands around my throat....we never had any problems or misunderstandings after that. LOL.
Sounds like you were probably raised much the same way I was. LOL!
I remember this movie so well.
The twist is one of those "holy shit" type of twists that is expertly displayed.
I don't know if the prequel will come as close to the original though.
The ending did shock me..I found it so amazing...I was pretty young though..but even now..If I would have seen it for the first time..I wouldn't of guessed the twist ending...
One of my favorite 2000's horror movie, alongside with The Skeleton Key
This and house of wax are some of my favorite, most underrated horror movies, both by the same director too.
This movie's plot twist is one of the few plot twists that I didn't see coming at all!
I’ve loved this movie since it came out, it’s wild and campy in some elements, but also very well done and good quality.
Another underrated gem with Isabelle Furhman is "The Novice"
Love this movie, saw my mother throw it on and enjoyed the living shit out of it, loved the twist. It did feel uncomfortable at times but overall a great movie 9/10, and now I get to enjoy a great review by Cody
Case 39 also is a pretty solid movie in this sub genre
In the 90's I saw a movie called Mikey. That film was also about a child who is adopted and who sabotages and commits murders. I don't know if I would still like that movie. but at the time that movie made a big impression on me. When I saw The Orphan I often thought of Mikey.
It's definitely super underrated. In the end they should have left it open for a sequel. It's "creepy kid" movie at its finest.
Yes!! This movie is so underrated! Even more worth watching a second time once you know the truth about Esther.
Honestly think this movies really good I got introduced to it around 2009 I was 9 years old and great video Cody keep up the great work
Saw the twist coming a mile away! I realised early on she was really an adult, but my biggest issue with this movie was the husband. It made no sense that he would believe a "young " kid, who he barely knew, over his wife. I just didn't buy any of that. The husband was so stupid that I wanted him to die. He ruined the movie more than the predictable twist. It wasn't a movie that I regretted watching, it's just not a movie I would revisit.
I don’t find it hard to believe he didn’t believe the wife she was a alcoholic and was known to make erratic behavior in the last you gotta remember he thought she was a child and she was always on her best behavior with him
@@joshfuller1962 i'd believe an alcoholic over a child any day. Children lie and make things up, alcoholics will tell you exactly what they are thinking. Regardless of whether or not she's on her best behaviour, she's an orphan who he knows nothing about vs. a woman he's loved and had a close personal relationship with for years.
I always looked at "orphan" as a 2000's version of the "good son" just with a huge twist
I just watched this last night and I really enjoyed it! I LOVED the twist and all the twisted ways they addressed the really mature topics. My only big criticism was how Peter Skaarsgard played the husband; the guy just looks stoned the whole time and there's no way any sane human would be as dismissive of the obvious signs that Esther is evil
Isabelle was actually 10 years old when they filmed this movie !!
Perfect use of Jay and Silent Bob bro. That was great! Hehe
Esther was creepy AF & Farmiga is fantastic per usual, I always enjoyed this film back in the day. I’ll have to rewatch before this new sequel.
Your comments on the 'clueless/in denial' father character, was perfect in its context! So, I feel the writers, knew it? The purpose of the 'other male character' - the son, being intuitive, by way of questioning, is to me a plus point. The male characters, father and son, were 'separated' to (most probably) show difference in emotional intelligence. Whereas, one (male) is totally detached, not every male is like that?:)
I just watched the first one. Damn Esther! I found myself feeling sorry for her. Then...they showed how old she really was! 😮😮😮 Wow...
Cody you are the best. Love your straight and to the point approach. Many a movie I have watched or skipped based on your reviews. Great sense of humor and yes orphan is a true classic I live for the twist in horror/psychological thrillers. I remember when I first saw this film on DVD back in 2009 and the twist hit me in the fucking gut with how shocking and jarring it was. Definitely underrated horror classic. Love this film along with Frailty which is another underrated classic.
I appreciate the kind words. If you're ever interested in a movie please don't skip it based on my opinion. You may enjoy them more than I did.

Lol that absolutely hilarious your mom breaks in the door like The Shining but says "She's 33 years old"
This is why I love your channel man, I get reviews that I wouldn't get anywhere else. And almost always about movies I've taken an interest in. I'm actually pretty excited for Friday, this one has always been sneaky good to me. I'm definitely caught off guard that they went the prequel route, but excited to see where they take it. Thanks for the content man.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters, it was awesome, also I remember when people laughed at the part where Ester said, "I know, they fuck."
I really liked that movie back in the day and I didn’t see the reveal coming. Looks like I’m going to need to do a free trial!
Just finished it. Wow! What a villain. It actually gave me uncomfortable creeps. Thank you cody
I watched this film for the first time last week and I'm so glad I hadn't gotten the twist spoiled.
That sucks you had twist blown. I just watch this 2 weeks ago and didn’t know. That twist blow my mind. I was like wtf no way. Loved it. lol
Great review! Esther easily ranks up there with Damien from The Omen and the 3 kids from Bloody Birthday as some of the best killer kids I've seen in horror flicks!
The husband was the biggest clueless idiot that walked the earth!
My entire family was actually relieved once he got his...
Definitely an overlooked gem. Esther is one seriously underrated horror villain.
I’m so glad to see more people talk about this movie. Had never seen it until like a week ago, and it quickly became one of my top 5 favorites
I recently rewatched this movie & I really enjoyed it. I'm giving it a 10/10!
This was a great movie. Like you said, totally underrated. Impatiently waiting for Orphan First Kill! Great video 👍
I've been waiting for you to review this movie. I loved it, it was like "The Good Son" but had a great twist at the end. The girl who played Esther is one hell of an actress. The only part of the movie that kinda annoyed me is how incompetent and dumb they made the dad come off at times.
I absolutely love Orphan & wish it was more talked about. Can't wait for Orphan First Kill! Dude I'm so sorry the twist was spoiled for you, it blew my mind when I saw it in theaters!
Bruh just watched the kill count for this
Same here! It was awesome!
Same 😂
Same
Most likely alot of audience crossover between dead meat and here i found cody after binging dead meat from yt recommended
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out by myself and none of my friends who were films buffs or horror fans could understand why I wanted to see it. I think there were 3 or 4 other people in that showing. I thought it was pretty good and I was a fan of Vera Farmiga who later became my favorite actress after Bates Motel. I liked the twist but it seemed to be a polarizing response. The new film is really straining credibility with the actresses age, but if it's well done then I can probably overlook that aspect.
Orphan I think is one of the best horror movies I've seen within the past 10 years! The acting was great and absolutely loved that twist! I wasn't expecting that at all. I can only hope that this one is just as good. I agree about the husband in this movie. I remember seeing it for the first time hoping thaht the husband would be someone we could like but he was an absolute jerk! Disagree about Daniell. Always figured he figured something was a little of with Esther. Maybe he shouldn't have spoken to his parents that way but maybe if both of them had listened especially to the husband, we would have had a different outcome. . Loved this movie and cant' wait to see Orphan: first kill! Great review!
People that spoil Orphan's twist: *"Oh my god she's 33 years old."*
People who wanna see the movie: *"WHAT THE FUUUCK!!!"*
I agree that this is one of those hidden underrated gems that never really got the attention or traction that it deserved - great movie
I saw this movie a couple days ago and I really wanted to know your thoughts on it Cody. Right on time haha. Keep up the good work :)
You going off on Daniel and the dad had me dying 😂Totally agree
The Jay and Silent Bob edits xD top tier
@cody leach This was a pleasant surprise when the notification for this popped up b/c I didn't expect to review an older and underrated movie, such as Orphan rn, but makes sense, there's a new one coming out. ☺ I found that out thru you reviewing this so thanks Cody, 😉
I think Jack Coleman (the husband) also was so oblivious because of the fact that the wife hid the alcohol from everyone when she was pregnant and he felt lied to. Trust was betrayed.
There's a British horror movie called "The Children" from 2008 that's worth a watch.
Orphan is one of the greatest psychological horror movies of all time. It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such as the concept and themes. The tone and element was scary, creepy, spooky, eerie, dark, gritty, urban, and gothic which works perfectly for the movie. That twist still gives me chills and goosebumps. 😱😰 Isabelle Fuhrman did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Esther Coleman as she put tons of emotion and depth into her role. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍😎💯👍
I agree with you Cody. The fact that this ending was spoiled for me, will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth. I just wish I could’ve watched this movie without knowing nothing. Still love it but still, would’ve loved to experience it live.
I love this film tbh I give it a solid 9/10. Definitely a film I can never get tired of
His entire segment on Daniel 😂😂😂😂 I feel the same man hell with mom we weren't even allowed to BREATHE in frustration when we were upset.
On time she gave the biggest lecture for something I did n I sat down n let out a big breath n she was like "BREATHE again 🔪🔪🔪🔪" 😭🤣😂
I'm telling ya! You couldn't even roll your eyes. Haha
13:55 I love these over the top simplified retellings of scenes xD
I like the way you've really gotten your own voice and personality to come across on camera. It's not easy to do. Even with the cut aways you're not taken out of the review. Nice.
It’s so weird that this is the only horror movie I can watch and enjoy without having nightmares or being that scared. It’s odd
Orphan is a forgotten gem in the horror community that despite a few slow moments, a little bit of writing issues and the dad being a bit unlikeable, this works pretty well due to its engaging story and twists, a creepily devilish overlooked performance by Isabelle Fuhrmann and some great performances from Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard (not related to the Skarsgard) and a twist that is still surprising. Love hearing your thoughts as always, Cody and your intimidation of the dad made me laugh as well as the clip of Jay and Silent Bob beating up people makes me laugh too.
Release date: 24 July 2009 (USA)
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Story by: Alex Mace
Box office: $78.8 million
Budget 20 million
Same situation. Ending was spoiled, but ended up really liking it for everything else u talked about also. Very bummed to think of how it could have gone with the reveal wo knowing.
Excellent review man. One of my favorites since finding your channel. I've only seen Orphan once but it definitely left a mark. Great twist. I never saw it coming. Sarsgaard's character was absolutely on my last nerve.
Cody 15:19 & 16:24 back in our day that's what we used to call "discipline." Ass-whooping was the only "save the children" foundation we had.
Which is due for a comeback!!!
I remember seeing this and another movie called Joshua around the same time back in the late 2000's. They are similar as far as both having awesome child performances who both play villainous roles. Joshua has Sam Rockwell which is always aces. I need to watch these again for sure.
@@FOXCYBORGNINJA Lol, he really was. He was like the legit reincarnation of that kid from The Omen.
So good! I saw it a while ago and didn’t like it as much. Just rewatched it in 2023 and it held up so well!! I immediately looked up if there was a sequel and found the prequel in 2022… can’t wait to watch that one.
This is loosely based on a true story. It's true that a woman pretended to be younger than she was and was adopted
Thank you so much Cody for making me and my familly discover this movie (Orphan) it is awsome!! Love you man! Keep continuing the good job.. I’ve been following you since 2years now, and you’ ve made me discover a lot of great horror movies. 👍😉

"She's 33 years old."
WHAT THE FUCK?!!"
😆😆😆😆😆
I’ll have to check this one out. Concept sounds very interesting.
FINALLY I been searching "Cody Leach Orphan" for like 3 years now 💀
Don’t care what anybody says, I just watched this film even though I’ve seen it before long ago when I was young. And it still surprises me with the twists and great acting. This was a damn good film.
a classic ❕
The fact that I realized that the actor who play esther was actually an adult and in the movie she's 33 years old pretending to be a 9 yearl old was shocking.
she was a teenager at the time
@@animal1nstinct394 No but the character.
@@transformersfan3509 oh ok got u
Watched it again for the first time in like 10 years. Such an underrated movie bruh. Love it so much!
Honestly the Esther/Leena is my number two horror movie twist and third all time
I laughed when she pushed the little girl off the slide I was like oh damnnn
I love this movie. I feel at times the dad playing dumb to esther with all these things happening is a bit annoying but other than that I love the twist to when u find out who she really is. And just how brutal and ruthless she was. Underrated gem and esther is such a great villian. Great review I didnt expect this one coming
3:04 I agree 1000% ! You even named the same movie that got me to become a fan of her. Would you consider making a review on Running Scared? I know it's not the greatest movie but not terribly and I don't see many if any cover it.
I loved it when I saw it in theaters.
Great review Cody, you had me laughing big time when you were acting like Daniel in the movie, great performance from you.
