Check out the best stem degrees video and the STEM degree tier list video for more information on STEM degrees. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (Math). These are known as being some of the better degrees when compared to others and there is a lot of truth to that, but it's not that simple. There are many STEM degrees that aren't that good so as always, it's worth it for you to do your research.

I just finished my BSc in Biology and I can confirm - Do NOT get into biology if you 1) don't want to pursue a career in ecology/zoology/botany, etc and 2) have respect for your soul, money and time. I'll now get into a MSc degree in Molecular Biomedicine and Biotechnology because Biology has served me absolutely nothing. If I could go back I would've chosen Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry or something along those lines with skills that are actually useful in the industry (programming, data analysis, molecular modeling and drug discovery...)

Does the degree title really matter? People doing Biology will have the same foundation knowledge and principles as someone studying biotech, biochem, immunology, pharmacology, molecular biology, genetics, medicinal chemistry, microbiology, embryology, sports science, nutrition/food science ETC.. I also did a biology BSc and still managed to do modules in pretty much anything I wanted. It wasn't all animals and plants as others tend to think it is.
I don't think biology is a waste of a degree, although I can see why people think it is. Use your masters to build on statistics and lab skills to make up the lack of these experiences at undergraduate. Although, I suppose COVID has made this harder...
I think degree titles are misleading as to what someone actually studied.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm a bio major. My school is a small school and offer different types: Geneal, Pre Professional, Nursing, and Biochemistry. I'm pre professional right now, but thinking of going into general. Do you think it would be smart for me to switch to biochem instead? I just want to take the least amount of chemistry classes as possible. I hate math, so it would be nice to have some guidance into which track I should do and the careers offered for that. I already plan on going to grad school

    • @Sesj02
      @Sesj02 4 роки тому

fanatsywriter 12345 what is your biochem program like at your university? I think switching would be an ideal solution if: - you know that the program in your school has a good professional school/hiring track. One of my friends also obtaining a biochem degree (with an emphasis in biology) got immediately hired after graduation (which occurred last May) into a lab.
      - the pros/cons of a biochem versus biology degree
-if your interested in the versatility of biochemistry in other fields (computer science, chemistry, microbiology)
Honestly you’re better off double majoring in biology and biochemistry or majoring in biochemistry with a pre professional concentration/minor. Also, try to get as much as lab/work experience as possible before you graduate!!
Edit: I just saw your math comment. Biochemistry requires more math than a regular biology degree. At least at my university, biochemistry majors are required to take 3 semesters worth of calculus and 2 semesters of calc based physics. It’s not bad, but it’s not an easy requirement to overcome

    • @lonnisplace1459
      @lonnisplace1459 4 роки тому

@@Sesj02 My last advisor informed me that the only difference is that we have to take an extra chemistry class for biochem. For any bio track, I think we have to take chem 1 and 2 and inorganic chem 1 and 2 and for math, we have to have calc and statistics and to get there we have to pass College Algebra and trig or pre calc. My current advisor advised me to take trig. I am taking college algebra right now. I am behind on my classes and will possibly graduate a semester late, but that's okay. I was focused on graduating on time, now I'm just focused on passing my classes and getting a great job I'll love

It seems like two common rules of thumb for a good degree in stem are:
    1) salary will be based on supply, demand, and competitive landscape of possible careers
    2) foundational majors, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science are in demand because they can be applied to so many industries. The more foundational majors, as long as their skills are in demand, always seem to offer the safest paths and most wide array of career opportunities.

6:17 Math Education is not a STEM degree.
I'm not trying to nit-pick, but the sad state of affairs is that math education is completely divorced from the field of mathematics. I am a math major, got my degrees in math, taught a couple of years at the college level, all great.
Now I am teaching high school, and it is a complete bastardization of the entire discipline. No working mathematicians are consulted when it comes to math education at the gradeschool level. Not for curriculum, not for textbooks, nothing. It's like they are teaching them how to write music and convert the writing to a different scale or key, but they never actually let them hear any music. They don't _do_ anything and I cannot communicate with them. Their previous teachers tell them how to solve a problem with a procedure that they cannot deviate from, and they tell them math is "another language." It's so bizarre.

@@ShaneHummus You're welcome. If you're interested in the divide between mathematicians and math education, check out Paul Lockhart's "A Mathematician's Lament", which you can find online.
Paul Lockhart is a research mathematician that later went on to teach math at the high school level, and he does an excellent job at detailing just how bad it is. You might find its contents as inspiration for some content on your channel, as it really shows the difference between math as a STEM field, and math education as a .... weird bastardization of the field that serves very little practical purpose.

As a math tutor, I am trying to break that mold constantly. I learned the most by experimentation with math and learning how to apply concepts to new situations, so I'm trying to teach my students that the best way to be good at math is to learn how to think through a problem, not just memorize how to do it. So, I tend to stress conceptual teaching rather than algorithmic teaching. I'm also trying to show that it can be fun to play around with numbers and manipulate variables. I'm not a math major, btw. I'm just a chemistry major who does math tutoring on the side.
I do admit that I've been fortunate enough to be in gifted programs throughout my elementary and middle school years and those teachers taught the importance of understanding the underlying concepts. I also had a father who taught math and he stressed the same from elementary school. I went to a magnet school as well, so my teachers there (especially my calculus teacher) also stressed understanding the underlying basis for a problem rather than simply memorizing how to do it. So, I do acknowledge that I have been unusually fortunate in my education.

What I've noticed regarding three of the degrees you've mentioned:
    1. Library Science/Library Information Science. Effing useless as a 4-year bachelor's degree - every even remotely serious job opening I've seen requires a master's degree. And specifically for master's degrees in this field, it doesn't matter what you got your bachelor's degree in, as long as you've got a bachelor's degree in something from an accredited college/university.
    2. Biology (including related degrees) - pretty much useless if you're stopping with a bachelor's degree. Not too bad (depending on what field you want to end up in) as preparation for graduate school in a related field (many fields expect biology or something like it as your undergraduate preparation and it's also good - with the proper selection of pre-med classes - for someone planning to go on to medical, dental or veterinary school). But you really don't want to get into this as your major thinking you might get a decent job with just your 4 year degree.
    3. Animal Science - is a total waste of time. Made-up degree and field for hacks. Even for those planning to become Veterinarians (you really should be doing biology, a specialization within biology, or a focused veterinary science/pre-vet school program for your undergraduate work if your goal is graduate school for a doctorate in veterinary medicine).

I'm only 16 so whilst I don't have hands on experience with any of this, I've always thought the S part of stem is very overrated. The problem is if your career is not something that's directly marketable it's difficult to make money out of it, no matter how good you are at it or how difficult it is. Getting a PhD in theoretical physics and going into research is incredibly difficult but you can't really sell your research on string theory. If all you're doing is research and aren't able to discover anything you can sell for money then unfortunately money isn't going to magically appear because you're smart. Whereas if you're for example an aerospace engineer and are designing aircraft then your abilities are actually useful and can be sold and it's why you will almost always make more money as an engineer than as a scientist. What I'm saying is unless you're just really passionate about what you're studying there's really no point in going into science research. It's incredibly difficult and stressful for mediocre pay. Engineering and tech are just as difficult but much more profitable.

"I'm only 16 so whilst I don't have hands on experience with any of this, I've always thought the S part of stem is very overrated."
Not when the other three letters of STEM are all founded upon science. The value of knowledge and scientific research should not be heavily judged based on subjective monetary value. It is important to remember that most tech innovations came about from intellectual knowledge purely derived from curiosity and creativity which you can't put a price on. If anything " pure science" disciplines such as theoretical physics are undervalued by our capitalist society which places an immense amount of value on quick results and monetary potential, reductively approaching science through a narrow minded viewpoint. Theory is the basis of all applied undertakings and that should be respected more than it currently is in our society. You don't need to be "really passionate" about scientific research to understand and pursue that. Hopefully you'll understand that when your older.

Although I agree with a lot of what you said, a theoretical physics degree is HUGELY desirable. It mainly just shows that your smart and therefore everyone from the CS industry to the financial industry to the engineering industry will want to hire you. It’s basically a maths degree and makes you far more employable than let’s say a civil engineering degree.

Although I do agree that there is a bit of a saturation of Biology majors in entry level work, I will say that it is possible to find a job and start your path down a career. I graduated in 2016 with a Bio degree. No fancy research or shadowing experience. Just a BS in General Bio, and now I do really well and work at a big pharmaceutical company. I would say to make that happen 1) You have to be willing to start on the low end. I came out of college making $14/hr at my first lab job. 4 years later and my pay has more than doubled. 2) You have to be willing to move. There are certain cities that are big biotech/pharma hubs. Philadelphia, NYC, San Francisco, LA, Raleigh, just to name a few. Anyone with a Bio degree just keep your head up!!

For myself, I am pursuing mechanical engineering initially because I thought mechanical engineering is about studying and playing with interesting mechanisms and robots. Then I ended up struggling with a lot of math, equations and theories that I hardly memorize. My mentor told me don't go for a precise major if you're not sure what you really want. You might find out either limited career opportunity or the job content isn't what you expected.

Its not a degree but you can become a licensed practical nurse and start off around 24$ an hour. And you only have to apply to maybe 1-3 places and start work. Actually, in 2020 long term healthcare facilities headhunt students while they are still at school. HVAC (air condition people) make even more money and have no problem finding work. The thing you will learn when you go out on your own is that you get paid A LOT for doing work that is not fancy. Do yourself a favor and learn to love doing something that's high demand and low glamour. By the time you are 30 you will be in your dream home, driving a really nice car, and actually be in the black and not the red. I feel really bad for my friends that are 34 years old and still are in the red, really I do. I feel like they were tricked. I can actually afford to only work 10 months out of the year (and still put away good money towards savings). I might do that soon.

As someone in biology the major is used as a stepping stone to get pre-requisites for graduate schools and specialized schools for optometry, PA school, pharmaceuticals, or stepping stone for biotechnology, bioinformatics, etc and then of course medical school. At a graduate level, but the put the introductory courses there. So no, its not the major you’d choose if you want to get a job immediately after a 4 year degree, but the stepping stone degree for further education. So I wouldn’t exactly call it useless since you’d have to take pre-requisite classes like organic chemistry and anatomy and physiology that you will see in medical school again, buut you’d need to work your butt off those classes, since I have a lot of peers who’s either going off to get Ph.d, MD/OD, or become PAs as well as other medical field practices like physical therapist, and chiropractors. So I wouldn’t consider it 100% useless, but be smarter of what it can be used for, the possible prospects, and don’t expect to get a job immediately after. I’m simply planning to go into nursing school once im done and thankfully I have my pre-reqs up done from the major, but I don’t think I would have made it if I had majored in nursing first.

Fifty years since I left college, some comments where I have experience:
Printing Technology - I worked at the largest printing factory in the world. Out of thousands of employees, there was only one, a semi-useless middle management slot, that might use this degree. Everyone else had either climbed up from a manual job not requiring H S diploma, or (front office) had an MBA or BA/Accounting.
Audio Engineering - what I learned in my music industry years in Nashville is that the A E degree is worthless. The top people have no degree, or an EE degree. My lifelong friend with the BS-AE ended up arranging flowers.
Animal Science - a very good degree if your job was lined up for you when you were born on your daddy's farm. Seriously. Otherwise, forget it.
Mortuary Science - might help you with state requirements if you are slated to inherit your father's funeral home.

I know teachers don't get paid really well, but someone has to do it, and education degrees do at least prepare you for a specific career path (and you are legally required to have a college degree to teach in a public school; it's not like there's a way to pursue this career path without a college degree). Most people who get those degrees already know the jobs aren't high-paying. Also, you seem to be criticizing "specific" education degrees, but there is no such thing as a general education degree. Like, you can't get certified to teach every subject K-12; that's not how the education system works. In most states you can either be an elementary school teacher, or you can pick a specific subject to teach in grades 6-12. If colleges offered some sort of general education degree, that would be even less useful than the specialized education degrees.

for the specialized teacher degrees, some areas like my state require middle and secondary teachers to be specialized in specific fields to teach those subjects. so for example to be a high school math teacher you need to specialize in math as part of your education degree to meet the requirements to be certified to teach that subject.

    Couple comments.
    1. A number of these degrees are, as you pretty much say, STEM-labeled underwater basket weaving degrees. HOWEVER, some WILL be suitable for those who use them as underpinning for very valuable graduate degrees. The obvious example is biology, especially as a part of a double major, for people pursuing an MD, DVM, or something like that. The obvious caveat is what curriculum the particular school includes in what it calls a biology BS. Clearly, if you want med school, some advice from your target med school on what and where to get pre-med curriculum will be helpful. Some can qualify for a 6-year med program. I myself see 2 excellent opthalmologists (one is a retina sub-specialist) who both have double-E undergrad degrees. For the exercise stuff, discover what is preferred to go on to get a DPT.
    2. NO course of study is bad IF it has the CONTENT directly applicable to your goal. Generally, people shouldn't spend valuable resources on college unless they know WHY. Originally, I wanted to play in an orchestra. So my BM and MM make sense because the content advanced me toward that exceedingly competitive goal. Of course, as credentials, they and a token will get you a ride on a bus; orchestras care only about your audition performance. Well, that's not quite true; these are minimum credentials to teach in a community college somewhere, and underpinned my much more remunerative grad degree in computer science and engineering.

Although exercise science can be useless its not just used for personal training. You can go get your doctorate in physical therapy which pays very well and is in high demand because of an aging population. You can also become an exercise physiologist where you can work at clinics or hospitals not just gyms and help people perform better on the court or field or recover from something similar to a pt. Doctorate in occupational therapy is another option or even med school. So exercise science is useless in some ways but very useful in moving towards an even higher degree

Pay to apply to University (got a great deal of applying to 4 Universities for free). I couldn't apply to a fifth one due to I had to pay $70-$100 for University Application. In contrast you can apply to 20 jobs or more for free.
I got accepted yay! but now I had to pay $150.00 or $100.00 to reserve my seat. Failure to pay you lose your acceptance. Really, that is so lame.
Pay $62.00 for a virtual orientation that I was forced to take or lose my seat through the free app Zoom . Come on.
Was rushed to pay my classes but I end up paying $56.09 for I used my unemployment debit card. Not happy.
The price for the classes did not go down despite being online. 2 classes $2,000 online. Online Online.
    That is so much bs.

I think skills are very much important than a degree... its very bad that people don't understand themself and pick the wrong majors landing on places that they never desired.
I believe in life long learn and investing in smaller portions than putting the whole load of money for just one degree and expect miracles to happen.
I trust the future will not have this issue.

I agree if this video explain from Statistics but it could be totally different in personal experiences of people in those degree. Some people may get lucky, get hard working/entrepreneurial or get very well networks. But if you a commoner who want a better and easy life because of your degree it best to consider this video. I myself from Biology and in Biology itself i realized that i just excell in ecology related things and because i learning science it not tell you how spesifically to work or to make is only tell you to know and be curious of what you still don’t know. After graduation though i accompanied my mom in her cancer medication and blessed because of Biology degree i can understand about cancer and her medication/nutrition but cancer is a very extreme disease and she was passed away, after that i started search real job and rarely found biology requirement. If i found, it mostly near to biotechnology or chemistry. Luckily now i work as environment officer in forestry industry and very grateful to that. I believe every people has a purpose in this world, if you can find it statistic won’t apply to you. Keep faithful and grateful 😁 don’t be discouraged of statistics. Gbu

Many people get a dual degree in math and education, so they can teach math or they may work in non académic position. in general, a math degree is not a good choice for finding good paíd Jobs. However, You will not be unemployed with your dual degree in math and education.

Biology like Engineering is very broad. I have never met an unemployed Civil Engineer, and a Civil Engineer always needs an Environmental Scientist/Ecological Biologist to ensure construction project conformity with the MANY, MANY environmental laws. Many of these laws require the avoidance, minimization, and mitigation of impacts to endangered animals and plants, in beautiful forests and other stunning ecosystems, which is the specialty of the biologist. THERE IS GREAT DEMAND FOR ALL THIS STUFF, NOT ONLY NATIONWIDE, BUT WORLDWIDE. Now with climate change, climate fiires, sea level rise, the demand for environmental scientists and biologists is only increasing. Most biology majors believe that all they can use their biology degree for is in the boring-ass health field, or in a medical laboratory. Pull your heads out of your asses people and get with the program.

I got a biology degree in 1970. It didn't have many good job prospects back then. I did finally get a decent job much later in life by updating some of my biology courses and getting a biology tutoring job. Getting a two year HVAC diploma, was more practical. It helps to get a more specific biology related degree, like lab tech.

I'm a secondary school teacher, and I have to say it - in many cases, you DO need to specialize. Very few teaching certifications are EC-12. For most prospective teachers, you HAVE to narrow down your grade level and (past a certain grade level) subject.
Teaching Shakespeare to high school seniors and teaching a bunch of Kindergarteners their colors is a world of difference. That's typically why those who teach middle school and high school major in their subject, and minor in education, or else major in one thing then go back and get their teaching certification down the line to teach that thing. Those who teach elementary school are the ones who major in education. I majored in English and minored in secondary education because I don't WANT to teach young kids very basic reading and writing skills. I wanted to teach more complex skills to older students. If I had majored in education, I probably wouldn't have been able to teach the subjects and grade levels I do. I wouldn't have the knowledge or skills.
