Maaan was it good to hear this. I know all the names that are mentioned here, but watching him play was even more informative - now I know why all the greats used traditional grip from watching him play. It's easier to get certain sounds that way. Also very good to hear the assertion of drummer as condutor. LOL Bassists always say THEY are the ones in charge and pianists are similar.
I really love your videos and these masterclass types along with the in studio sessions one like you did with Terrell Stafford are my favorite. But I'm a trumpet student so there you are!
A friend of mine (he and his brothers). He was doing jam sessions at 7 (from what his older brother tells me). Recorded Live At The Village Vanguard while in his 20's. A phenomenal drummer; to play with him would be a dream.
Billy Higgins Jr. Thanks to this Brother I'm hipping my to his teachings. I'm the son of Billy Higgins the famous Jazz drummer and I play and this is helping.
Nice Work! Great analogy at the end brother and playing as well. I play here in Birmingham. Your brother Danny and his wife are friends of mine. Hope all is well.
There are very few drummers I've known who DON'T like Blakey. I've heard people have issues with Max Roach, but what he's saying about Max Roach is the melodic thing. Clifford Brown and Max Roach live at Basin street is absolute gold. But Blakey's influence seems to shine through several generations and also genres of music.
Damn... really enjoyable. I'm inspired to go try some shit. Also, anyone else think that that distorting-camera-mic sound actually sounds good? haha I kinda like that for some reason. Kinda like when a guitarist's tube amp breaks up a little.
How am I only just now discovering this guy?!?! He's great!
The sheer joy in his face while playing the melodies!
Simply wow!
This is one of the best jazz classes i have ever watched!
