    Hey Rob we bought an aero garden for fresh herbs and love how fast and tasty they are. Went into a hydroponics store the other day here in colorado and chatted with them a little bit about setting up a small aquaponics system. Watched a few people on UA-cam that have set up their own systems DIY and your channel is by far our favorite. We built a small barrel system like the one you built and we are in the process of getting the media and pump we need to run it. Thanks to my teacher Mr. Bob, I am a follower of you. And as per your guidance, I have set up 5 barrel cut in half, flood and drain system. I had no problem setting up the system except the siphon system. And even now, I have a little problem with the siphon, but hope to fix it soon. How important is a funnel on the standpipe in siphoning? Can we flood and drain once in every 3-4 min?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 років тому +1

      It helps to allow a lot of water into the standpipe which helps to initiate the siphon. If you can add one I would.

    Rob,
    Greetings from the states! I am hoping you can aid me in developing a system of modified aquaponics that can be installed into a relatively small backyard koi pond feature. So grow bed would actually be more like a large decorative planter 18" to about 3' or so. It would not be the main source of produce but it could supplement the family. Also koi would not be probably harvested. It would also not be the main form of biological filtration for the pond but could help supplement it as fish either enlarge or reproduce beyond the ponds capacity. Have enjoyed your videos and it has given a lot of insight into the size of systems I'd like to develop and look forward to hearing from you. There are many follow CAC, certified aquascape contractors, in Australia and I believe our group can gain a lot of knowledge from your input. Thanks.

    A fine explanation on aquaponics, Rob. Have recommended your site to a couple of my friends that became interested in it, after seeing my 55 gallon set up and wicking barrels. Almost had to chain them up, because they wanted them that much. By the way, is that flamethrower for the aphids or the plants, Rob?

    Hi Rob. I have recently discovered your site after seeing some news regarding aquaponics. I have an IBC and constructed siphon but I have to say I am getting overwhelmed with the entire project. I want a system to get organic produce and fish, easily and sustainably but I am starting to wonder just how much effort it all really is? Once it’s up and running, how much effort is required? When you factor in all the feeding and pest control and removing all the muck and getting the water chemistry right and the fertilizer and the minerals. It sort of seems like a full time job and I already have a full time job and small children which is another full time job. I don’t have time to be anything but a weekend farmer. I had thought this was something that runs itself more or less…. Could you make a video about your daily chores? Can you go on holiday?

Since your so busy with a full time job with children be an adult go to the store buy the food

    so your only two inputs are fish food and water? about how much is consumed? is this more efficient than hydroponics? what about normal plants in soil farming?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 роки тому

      The main reason I would recommend aquaponics is for the production of fish in the backyard setting as it's a great way to process the waste water so it doesn't have to be dumped regularly.
      You will need to add some extra elements for most veggie plants as the nutrition from the fish feed (once assimilated by the fish then the excess excreted as waste) may not have the full spectrum of required elements depending on what you want to grow.
      Anyone that claims you can grow any plant with just fish food isn't worth listening to I think. 😉😁
      I get folks telling me they can grow much better food in the soil all the time but none have told me how they get the fish to grow well in Vege beds... 🤔🤔😅🤣
      Hope that helps some Nick.
      Cheers.

      Hi Jay. At the moment I think there's about 20 silver perch in the system. We're not huge fish eaters here so they are mainly there to power the plant side of things. When I do harvest I like to take 5 or more out so we have some for the freezer or to share with guests.
      I have done a few larger fish harvests in the past & have a few clips on them in this playlist if you're interested.

      Hi there. Many commercial farms will only use the raft/DWC method & a few will use towers or NFT tubes as well. You just need to make sure that the solids are filtered out of the water or they collect on the roots of the plants causing health issues.

    So can anyone answer my question here regarding the hydroponic system I want to set up? I have a 90g tank with a fluval fx4 canister filter. I’m wondering if I need an external pump, if I can use my filter as the pump or if I should remove the filter all together? The filter will convert ammonia to nitrates with the bio media and I’m not sure if that will take away from the nutrients available to plants

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  4 роки тому

      Sorry I missed this drew.
      I would just use the media in the grow bed as the biofilter mate. Makes things a lot cheaper. A small solids filter before the bed will prevent it from clogging uup with solids too quickly.
      Hope that helps & You build went smoothly.

    2 questions - 1. Is there an issue with mosquitos or do the fish generally take care of that?
    2. Instead of electric or battery operated pumps could you use a gravity method?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 років тому

      Hi there. Mosquitoes really aren't an issue as they don't like moving water + the fish would make very quick work of them. 😉
      For small systems like these you really need to run a pump. I have seen some folks with large ponds that have fish in them float rafts on their surface to grow a few plants but the water would be as nutrient dense as a aquaponic system such as ours.

      Probably not a good idea to have normal potatoes in the beds as they may rot from what I've seen. I have seen folks grow them in pouches that sit in the beds so the very base gets moist if that helps.
      Root crops I have grown & do well in there are ginger, turmeric, carrots, beetroot & water chestnuts. Sweet potatoes did OK but grew larger tubers in the soil where the vise escaped the grow beds. Best of both worlds I suppose with nutrient rich aquaponic water & healthy soil.

    6:39 --This might seem like a stupid question; but what about wild carp? I'm from Australia also, and am aware that the Rivers here are full of carp, so much so that they are becoming a major pest - having to be culled.
    They seem a lot like Catfish, in the fact that they're pretty "hardy" when it comes to water cleanliness, and also diet (they'll eat anything). Why not just catch a few carp and use them in aquaponics??

    I had an aquaponics system with red claw crayfish/yabbies and it worked very well. I think Pacu fish would be good for aquaponics as they get huge and eat green matter like crazy water pigs. They also look like piranha LOL!

      They do look very cool. Might be a bit of an issue trying to get them past the Gov here in Australia though..... 😉
      Cheers & happy growing.

      @@RobsAquaponics Cheers, I think lobster sized yabbies would be good sediment feeders too if allowed. Butter fried yabbie tail must be high in protein LOL!
