This TAS is absolutely phenomenal, but honestly my favorite part (and the most TAS-like) might just be how you collect the star bits instantaneously with perfectly mapped motion controls. The precision is so beautiful.
The fact that it still takes almost 3 hours to beat truly shows how much hard work went into the game, I love games like these that provide hours upon hours of fun, you could play all day and there would still be so much more to do afterwards, making you exited to play the next day. Well those were the experiences I felt playing this as a kid…
I mean, I guess, but you can't just take the TAS total time as amount of effort put into a game. Some games are less broken than others, meaning TAS can exploit more or less depending on the game. Mario 64 can be beaten in like 5 mins by a TAS, but you are essentially skipping the entire game. Whereas here, there is simply no way to outright skip levels or barriers of entry or what have you, so TAS has to play through the entire game. You really going to tell me because Mario 64 can be beaten in 5 mins it's a half-assed game?
@@jeang6588I know I know, it’s just I would expect a TAS to be much quicker, so when it still takes ages to beat, it really shows how well and polished the game is, Nintendo really made sure to not cut any corners when making this game, ensuring people such as speedrunners don’t just go full god mode and completely break the game, beating it in just minutes. And I get it, super Mario 64 can be beaten really quickly, but like you said, the time it takes for a TAS to beat a game doesn’t determine the quality, it’s just older games usually have much more game breaking bugs and glitches, but thats just my opinion.

Wonderful TAS! It's so incredible to see the combined community efforts over the past 5+ years result in a run so stunning and visually appealing. Even if there's room for some optimizations to be included, this serves as an incredible benchmark for future TASes of this game. Looking forward to seeing this go down! Great work!
Lol, "Combined Community effort" did jack for this run. HIME probably did 90% of the routing himself and TASed 100% of it. The correct sentence should be "It's so incredible to see a great TASer like Hime finish this incredible run"
Yes, this actual route was probably invented by HIME, but the inspiration for this route would've had to come from multiple previous iterations of any% routes (most notably jda7's incorporation of Boulder Bowl 1 late, doing Honeybloom 1, Silver's original Restricted Bank route, etc.). This TAS is also full of strats that have been found and refined heavily over the past several years (a lot of them would've first been used by Nemi, but there are some like ITC that other runners have popularized). So, yes, while the TAS itself is the work of one (very talented) person, it wouldn't have been possible (or, at least, this well-refined) without all the documentation and research that the community has done.
That silver star drill segment ended at the perfect time for the music, you’re telling me the most optimal route is both the fastest and aesthetically pleasing

This is the very first speedrun I watched from start to finish. I did it both for the memories related to this work of art and because this speedrunner is amazing and managed to entertain me
How can you throw so many fireballs at once in the crate destruction minigames? That's done by shaking the controller and surely there's a rate limit to that, right?
The first TWO SECONDS of the actual run (after 3 minutes of cutscenes and whatever): Jumping from the starting platform without talking to the Luma again (which happens to me all the time when I try to be fast), the tiniest duck ever (quack) to do a long-jump, which had to be cut extremely short to not bonk the wall, then shaking for extra height, also without bonking, then wall-jump and another shake that gets you just barely enough height (normally the little decoration thing on the left would be used, because it's a little lower, but that would require walking). TASes are amazing. And blinking is not allowed! :D
Somehow this TAS existed without me having found out of its' existence after more than a whole year later... lol. Gonna have to find the time to watch this one at some point
