This totally makes sense. The physics of better transformers is more important than just about ever other aspect of a properly designed tube amp. They were some very impressive graphs!
Those transformers look crazy big from the backside
Like stuffing a LS1 V-8 into a Miata
Nice work! .................... as usual .........
Impressive results. I really like the look of all of the transformers painted the same color. Hopefully, it will sound as good as it measures.
Hi Stephe, nice fix on the phase issue, clever and elegant and .... easy on the eyes as well :)
So far, so great. I look forward to your completed version.
Hi. Love what you’ve done!!! What tubes are you using in the preamp section? Thx!❤
not sure what tube combo is gonna be best for this build.
I'm very interested to hear your impressions after listening to it. The graphs looked great. This entire series you have done on the R8 has been very good...
Fingers crossed!
At 16:32 I wonder if the scope software is clipping the plot at the vertical limits rather than the amp actually clipping. The Vpp reading of exactly 60.001Vpp looks suspicious. Reading the THD figure, this .415Vrms input is producing only 0.5% THD. If the scope plot is correct, this would be way higher than 1% I think.
Super experiment, but unless I missed some part, 1: How do the measurements do compare to the "old" basic version? 2: How does the sound compare (I know, it's coming!) and 3: Instead of buying and R8 at $1500 and then a pair of ISO Tango at $1000, why not just start from scratch, buy a chassis, power transformer, sockets etc and the right trannies right from the start? I think the total bill would be more affordable and the result just as good. My 2 cents. I may be wrong, sure. Thanks for your great work.
IMHO it's always better to start from scratch, but for a lot of people, that's beyond their abilities. That's why people mod existing amps, they don't have to do fabrication work etc.
Impressive! Do you know what design/topology that requires the least amount of tube for an amp and still sounds good?
It's gonna be a single driver stage SE, look at my EL34/5751. That's about as simple as an amp is going to get.
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics dose it sound good though?
I wouldn't be selling them as my only production amp if it didn't sound good :)
The only changes I'm doing to my R8 is some tube rolling, and I just ordered two pair of Psvane Horizon EL34 tubes that Amazon has for 20% off. I don't know if I will be able to tell a difference to my Mullards but what the heck.
Nice! I have Horizon EL34 and KT88s and really like the EL34s overall. So I am going to move my KT88s on to a new owner who prefers that sound profile.
I can'r even find the Horizon EL34s on Amazon right now. What did you get them for? Maybe you got the last set available now?

They are still there with 20% off for $71.19 per pair. I'd post the link but the last time I tried that my comment was deleted.
@@MS-pw8yuthey’re there. Matched pairs Sold by psvane direct
No negative feedback tracks, very linear distortion vs input. VOX amps are known for no negative feedback. They have a very dynamic feel. Fender amp have a lot of negative feedback they stay very clean and take a lot to get them into break up.
Another thing to note is you might be clipping the scope and not the amp. Look at the voltage on the output and compare to the analog discovery specs. Might need to set the probes to 10x
Yeah might not be clipping like the AD is showing. I need to back up this with my old analog scope/signal gen.
Excuse me, ma'am, but I have a question about Willsenton R8 Mk2. After about 4 hours of listening, distortion appeared in both speakers and smoke began to escape from the 4 power tubes. The whole room is filled with the stench of smoke. What should I do now? I'm a bit afraid to turn the amplifier on again.
Return it.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronicsThe amplifier is still under warranty, so this is possible. However, I wonder what could have happened? Interestingly, I had a similar problem in the R8 Mk1. However, it was enough to reset the source (digital player) and everything went back to normal. But I haven't had any problems with smoking yet.
Likely the bias went high and the power tubes started to red plate.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
To make things more interesting, I had the same thing several times in my old Willsenton R8 mkI during a longer listening session (4-6 hours), but it was enough to switch the source in the amplifier or turn the streamer off and on and the music returned to normal (without turning off the amplifier). That's why I kept thinking that the problem was on the streamer's side. However, this time it appeared for the first time after over 200 hours of work in the MkII version, even though I am already using a different streamer. However, this time the matter was more serious, because smelly smoke started coming out from around the power tubes, so I quickly turned off the amplifier. (this never happened in the MkI version). As if there was some kind of signal breakdown. Do you still think it's a bias problem, or could there be something else?
Honestly, there is a lot of things it could be. if the streamer has DC on the output after a long session weird stuff can happen etc.
