I’m sure! This makes religious families very happy. It takes funds away from public schools, some that are already hurting for funds. So Christian and Hebrew parents (for instance) are getting school breaks regardless of their income. To pay a portion of their tuition that isn’t under the same scrutiny as public schools are. They don’t have to hire teachers with the same education or qualifications as teachers in public schools do. Some teachers in private school may not have much more than a high school diploma. They might be attending college but no way would they get hired as a teacher in a public school. A teachers aid or assist. maybe. Also, private schools can pick and choose who they want to let in and who they want to kick out. This could be problematic if they don’t have to prove wrongdoing on the child or parents part. They just simply decided to shut the kid out. There’s a lot wrong with using public funds intended for public use directed towards private expenditure.

Jennifer's comment about how some people view hierarchy is right on the money.
We all know that there will always be people trying to make a mad dash for power, willing to do anything to get it and keep it, just as there will always be people who never rise to their full potential no matter how much intervention is done. The difference between us is that some people believe the preservation of power in the "right" hands is what makes a moral world. Progressives (should) see power not as a finite resource for the righteous to use but as an infinite, collective resource we all can access and share to make the world even better.

Whatever happened to Common Core? My daughter lives & works in Philadelphia. She teaches math at a public charter high school. She was hoping a core curriculum would be pursued. Within the large numbers of elementary & middle schools in Philly, math education is uneven. The state requirements in math proficiency in order to graduate high school are strict. Every school year, there are students who need intense help catching up to their peers. I know that local control is almost idolized, especially on the right; however, local control in dozens of small districts too often brings about unequal educational outcomes.

A great conversation and her last statement of fighting over scraps is the key imo. I think the out of control greed in our country, society, and world for that matter has conned so many people out there to believing that survival of the fittest is the way to go. I've had so many discussions with people in my life about why people want to be rich. I've tried to express that anyone who works and makes an honest living knows it's hard to get rich without exploitation of other people but I almost always get push back. No one wants to seriously look at how the sausage is made in terms of getting rich. The dismantling of the education system and the blaming of the system for all the greed driven problems in our society today is just another way the Greedy shady sons a you knows are trying to exploit and rule the American people.

Not to mention, she’s been focused on women’s rights and having this Shapiro aid issue would look bad. And while Trump has no leg to stand on, it could turn into some saying neither candidate is worth it.
I also think Josh and Andy are best in their seats. Kelly shouldn’t be removed because he’s a sitting D senator from a state that could easily replace him with R. Further he’s very pro oil and terrible on climate change. And given the new climate report that just came out, he’s the last thing we need as VP. 2 points:
    1. The GOP hasn’t forgotten what value public education brings. They want indoctrination from a young age and they’re not getting the purity of indoctrination they need for social control.
    2. ROI isn’t just neo-liberal it’s a reality. Education is far too expensive to justify a 40K teaching job with no pension and one that requires each teacher to provide their students with supplies. ROI is CRITICAL and needs to be a factor to be considered as “cultural cohesion” and “honor” don’t pay bills or build retirement savings.

Nationalize public education. The successes of the American district funding model are an "in spite of" deal and not "because of" and its fundamental weakness, especially on the world stage, will continue to be made increasingly evident as things like income inequality grow. School nationalization should be a plank issue for any self-respecting progressive going forward.

Part of the campaign for debt free public money instead of a private corporation creating debt bearing private money loaned to member banks, financial interests, and the very wealthy as its 'first use' (along with 'fractional reserve' multiplication of those loans), is that National Public Education Funding would be one of the 'first uses' of money created and introduced into the economy. Not a 'trickle down' form of monetary policy that give 'first use' of new money created to banks/financial interests.

Some people have pointed out non-conservative public schools have the benefit of a superior public education system. I am just limited to the urban vs small town. They are fair and lean right and they say that in order to get the same level of education you have to send them to private school which is not within reach to pretty much any family in income as well as supply.
Im not sure but that is a big thing for parents. Its not consistent across the state city and local which is why I mention it is a systemic issue. Very interesting
Also, Im sure most of these private schools are not affordable and the classroom or student:teacher ratio and selective process makes them out of reach. Plus parents dont want to go drive to the other side of the city. So there are few in quantity and even with financial assistance there are not enough because they focus on elite education where they are focused on college acceptance. There are students who may not feel 4 years of studying a college major is a good tradeoff for the tuition and we have way more areas of online learning or occupational stuff than 20 years ago. So you have this gap Like she says, it is more important for parents to have a better public education high school and under school system that doesnt cater to one type of family
Also, Im referring to people I know living in Texas who are republican. I say this because it speaks to the opinion that many republicans observe in the lack of the quality of education (the content of study is a lesser concern) quality to them has to do with how effective the teacher is able to teach ect..
    Anyways, just a comment
The people that are effect are both utban and suburban. Suburban in that there are so many students and too little options and urban being mainly affordability. Privatization of education isnt what these parents want nor do they think is a necessity. also, issues of what is taught in school is more or less not a statewide issue it has to do with the local board and not the system
    12:07 Sam understands it
I personally feel other people are light years ahead of the traditional school system. I cant put my brain around it but its like some people are stuck on rigid teaching methods vs teaching vouchers and that causes students to lag behind or what bush said “left behind”

The characterization of voucher programs is mostly right, but this is a misrepresentation of the whole story with Shapiro. He had a proposal for a voucher system in a budget last year. PA is a split state with some some hardball Republicans and he was trying to deal with them. After the teacher's union protested, he struck it from the bill, and didn't have it in this year's budget, which added 1.1 billion dollars for public school funding, including breakfast for all K-12 students.

But I hate more any child being trapped in a system that does not provide an adequate education because unqualified teachers cannot be let go to find a job they are better suited for. Yes, rich people can use vouchers, but most people are not rich, and the less well- off people really get the most out of school choice. Given the series of news stories that have surfaced lately about him and the fact that the Democratic Party knows Shapiro will be an odds on favorite to win re-election in 2026 - preventing PA from going full MAGA - I can’t see him being the pick. Kelly - a much more robust resume - or Walz - blue collar and relatable - are far better choices. I’m not thrilled in every way with Shapiro. I’m a teacher here in the Philly suburbs and while Shapiro is a FAR better option than Mastriano was, he’s at best far less harmful to unions and public education than the MAGA movement. @@michelleisaacson6069 they should learn their lesson from Biden. "Oh, not voting for Biden is voting for Trump. Lesser of two evils." The voters don't give a fuck. Give us a shit candidate and we will not show up.

Voting third party has the same effect as not voting. All it does is let whoever votes D or R pick the president for you, with you having no voice in it.
As a lifelong independent voter, I am critical of both parties, but recognize that right now the R party is dangerous with Project 2025 on the table. They try to deny it, but if you look at the red states, you can see the policies already being legislated. I really don’t want to live in an authoritarian theocracy that interferes in what should be personal decisions.
So however we feel about D, it would be smart to vote them in until we head off this danger. Put D in office until we can work out a better system.

Well that's stupid. I think he's a terrible choice and seeing Harris already pivoting to more moderate policies is disheartening, but any other vote is a vote for Trump

The VP doesn't set the policy- the POTUS does that. If she picks Shapiro, please don't let it scare y'all off so much. It's just a strategy thing for this election (which I don't agree with.) I want Tim Walz. But I'll happily vote Kamala 2024 no matter who she picks to keep democracy going so we can improve it over time.

It's not just about policy. It's about voters not voting- especially in MI.

Look at Biden's work to allow religious exemptions for birth control and abortion coverage in the ACA. VPs are not sitting around powerless.

@michelleisaacson6069 Yeah, the polls said Hillary was going to win and we saw how that turned out. If Kamala is even half as smart as she’s supposed to be she’ll pick Walz to keep her momentum going, not Shapiro to drag her down.
