I'm not sure if I remember correctly but the show was initially about Deena, it was made for Sheryl Lee Ralph and Effie was supposed to be a supporting character and she would die in the early of 2nd act. But because of how incredible "And I am telling you" was they decided to change the story to evolve around Effie and that where I am changing came from, to present the comeback of Effie.
Actually that part and those songs were written for Nell Carter.

It's amazing how from back 1981 she came on the scene with the play and was on her way but sadly got to the top at a very young age and did not have the support behind her to keep her rock and steady. She's be singing those songs from Dreamgirls now for 40 something years and it's amazing how she could have really did it bigger had she had the right people guilding/managing her like Jennifer Hudson. She has the right people around her almost out the gate but look at her? She's all over the place. So I'm glad Jennnifer Holiday is making due all THE SAME!

I have to honestly say I prefer Whitney’s live rendition of I Am Changing over Jennifer. Whitney slowed it down just a bit and the emotion of the lyrics along with her warm resonant tone came through better than the more growling and heavy vibrato which is Jennifer’s style.
With that said…Jennifer still owns And I Am Telling You. Even Whitney couldn’t top that one.
