Ram stick dead, HDD dead, battery dead, screen/hinges fell apart, certain keys on the keyboard stop working all at once throughout the day, and bios update somehow disabled the mousepad. This all happened within 0-3 years. Maybe their high-end stuff is more reliable, but I'm never ever getting an acer ever again.

The Helios, 17.3" version, cost a touch over GB£1200, this is the same as my GL702VM cost 5 years ago, which is a good price and leaves a little bit for a ram upgrade and maybe some extra storage further down the line. Excellent value for money though!!!!

Hi, this is secret agent from Acer. To change the post logo, you will need to keep the "POST & Animation" option as "enabled" in BIOS setup. Once you disable "POST & Animation", the customized logo will return to default. So, if you keep the setting disabled, you wll not see the customized logo you replaced. Let me know if it works.

This is one of those videos where I question the legitimacy of LTT reviews. This laptop has varying issues that are constantly discussed on Reddits “GamingLaptops” subreddit and none of them were discussed here. When negatives were brought up, Alex put a positive spin on it.
I suspect the choice of laptops to review/buy right now might be fairly average. It also could be a marketing experiment to see how discerning we are, when a little Short Circuit spin is added to a product. I also suspect they are looking for price competitive products to review.
I don't think you understand this channel is for first impressions not a review(it's actually very common). As you can see he just unboxed it and played around with it a little bit. This channel is for shorter videos with less editing that are fast to make. No research and testing go into those. The actual reviews are longer, on the main channel and only on certain products. EVs get reviews here I believe.
speaking of stickers. we made 3 purchases from LTT store over the last year and in each we received a bunch of stickers that we don't use. that's basically landfill trash. they should only be included if asked for at the time of order. JAT
My experience with acer involved the GPU failing a month outside of warranty and Acer declining to do anything. Nevermind the fact it failed 13 months after I bought it, but Acer wouldn't even offer to repair it if I paid. I've owned other computers in the past and warranty was honored as much as three months outside of warranty. That said I won't be buying another Acer product because of I don't expect it to last longer than a year.. while I still have a laptop from 2008 that still works...
I used an Acer before. My friend had a Helios and another a Nitro. So far it's been going good for a couple of years. It really depends on the unit. Never failed on me tho just getting slow.
I've said my experience with Acer my own separate comment. To sum it up, multiple laptops in my household (at least 5) needed to be repaired/dumped due to major hardware issues almost all within 3 years. This is just their low-end to mid-range series though ($300-$1000), so I'm guessing the high-end stuff is better built. It could also be different for each country, since they make specific variants for different countries (same models have significantly different specs depending on country).
10:55 dolby atmos tends to be better for making peripherals sound a bit better, as slightly better sound from trash speakers just mean slightly less trashy sound.
As someone with lots of computers. These Acer Predators are fantastic. On #3 only because of upgrading specs. They stay so cool for a gaming laptop. My 3070Ti, i7 spec stays at about 85⁰ CPU and 75⁰C GPU under the worst loads. It actually hits its wattage limits instead of thermal throttling. The only laptop thats even in the same ballpark is my Legion. Do not buy Alienware laptops they are TRASH.
The position of fingerprint is actually great for admin prompts while using the laptop. I use macbook (unfortunately) and I noticed having to move my hand from pad to top of keyboard when am installing/removing apps or modifying settings.. etc. Also even on startup if you dont use mouse your hands land at touchpad anyway. I think its placement inside the touchpad is better than being on the side or next to touchpad, in its own place
My opinion on the fingerprint placement: Placing the fingerprint reader at/in the trackpad provides way better UX and reachability than placing it in the power button where it provides only better looks/aesthetics. Obviously, this is for people with more use of the fingerprint than just logging-in one time. Happens a lot of times that I've to reach to my Macbook's fingerprint when I keep it on the laptop stand but doesn't happen with my Acer for same.

Acer always has a mixed bag for me. Their choice in materials is usually pretty good, but the mechanicals and support structure are hit or miss.
Much cheaper than predator line even though they have the same specs
@@DigitalJedi I guess my first Aspire had rather poor hinges, so I managed to twist them over the years, but that was also not even a mid-range laptop (I think it was 5350?). Other than that I am pretty content with performance and all.
The very first laptop review that doesn't even mention the actual screen size in the entire video. What a pro job.
Fast forward, now a 1500 USD version: the Predator Triton 14, the successor to the 300, has an i7 13700H, 16GB RAM, and a 105W RTX 4070 and a 230W power brick instead of a 180W.
There should be a thermal paint for the plastic or metal case that would change color based on the heat of the unit, so you can see the thermals..
Merry Christmas! Hope you all got some really cool tech products!
tech tip for 1:17 putting that many stickers on a laptop screen with an oled panel will decrease the amount of time before screen burn-in sets
Friendly request to include metric units for those of us not fluent in freedom units, otherwise great video!
Damn, this laptop looks so good and well built. Acer seems to be amping up their laptops.
it feels like a solid aluminum block , feels stupidly sturdy tbh, i love it
Man, gaming laptops have come a long way if Alex says this is "on the cusp of portability". When I bought my Clevo brick in 2017 i was amazed that there was a whole 1060 crammed into merely 5 kilos! And the battery lasted an eternal 45 minutes. Plus the fans produced a whisper-quiet 80 decibels.
Merry Christmas Linus media group!!!

Nice video, cherry on top was seeing how yellow your MBP screen is running :)))
I have the BestBuy 500SE version of this that I picked up earlier this year. I love it!
Uploading on Christmas Day? And a Sundayyyyyy??
I love how he didn't even mentions how loud the fan gets
Edit:- hey check this out someone is trying to scam me by pretending to be short-circuit channel in my replies
My household has had 5 Acer laptops so far. A mix of low-end to mid-range laptops... They were all filled with faults.
HP victus 16 R7 6800H and 3050Ti, just got it for Christmas, wonder what the folks at LTT think.
I'm disappointed actually. No Ethernet or dongle and 90w GPU
Cause it's thin, like Zephyrus.
@@joelconolly5574 My G14 does more on the 6800S. 115W in a similarly sized machine. Though, if they are using dynamic boost, then this would peak to 115W.
@@DigitalJedi and... with an Ethernet port

Next laptop suggestion from me is 'The lowest spec' model of Asus Tuf Dash F15. I want to buy the model but it is over priced in my country and from some reviews I learned thet the screen brightness is very low. Besides that there is probably just a stick of 8gb ddr 5 ram. And finally I don't have enough money to buy it....:)
At this point I'm pretty surprised that Short Circuit doesn't have a dedicated PC for recording gameplay.
I've just bought the Predator helios 300 with an i9-11900H and a 3070, the laptop is a beast of a machine for the money. My only complaint is the 3200 ram, it comes with 16GB out of the box which is adequate but needs upgrading and task manager says there are 8 slots on the board for some reason (there are only 2). The Helios, 17.3" version, cost a touch over GB£1200, this is the same as my GL702VM cost 5 years ago, which is a good price and leaves a little bit for a ram upgrade and maybe some extra storage further down the line. Excellent value for money though!!!!
Is some of the ram soldered? It may be reading soldered chips as individual slots.
For future speaker test I think you should make sure both laptops are either on the desk matt away because I feel like that affects the sound
Have you guys heard that recently there is news about Snapdragon releasing its 2nd generation with Ray Tracing on mobile processors? 🤔
ive loved this one for a while as a thin and light, underrated razor 14 compeditor and acer puts things on sale so much its probably gonna be half price soon
It is today at Best Buy which is why I’m watching this lol
@@LittleByrdEee same
They have a i7 12th gen 16gb ram 512 storage 165hz lcd display for 899 at Best Buy. Is this better than a MacBook Air m1 base version ? Was thinking of selling mine and getting the specs mentioned.

Alex reviewing laptops is my favorite LMG content
I clicked full screen at 0:05 and my heart stopped for a second😂
i had an acer aspire desk top back in the day that had the speakers built into the monitor and it was green. THOSE were the days. These new acer machines are pretty cool.
It's on sale at best buy right now for $999 so I'm probably gonna buy it!
I'm just so glad I've bought this before it sold out, or I will cry for the whole 2023.
9:19 I think you can only change the bootloader (even if its just the logo) if you disable secure boot and TPM then re-install windows
he mentions boot logo and not bootloader
@@nikhilchouhan1802Yea, boot logo is locked, i've tried to change out boot logo to our institute logo, i dont have the approiate signing tools for it to work with secure boot, and i'm not turning that off just to get our logo at boot.
I doubt Acer would be allowed to hand out a signing tool to someone like me, let alone an average joe end user.
@@denvera1g1 Oh its more complex than I thought.
@@nikhilchouhan1802 Same here, the first few desktops i tried it on worked, so i tried puishing it to everything and basically none of that worked, turned out these test systems were just set up using the old boot method which i didnt realise would make a difference.

90W is far from as powerful. Laptop 3060s max out at 140W with dynamic boost so this is on the lower end but their triton line is the thin and light skus. The helios packs full power.
140w for the 2022 releases.
@@pedro4205 oh yea I knew that! I edited. Thanks.
I would love it if you reviewed the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 15.6" I have seen it and thought it has a pretty good price for what you get, but would love to hear your guy's take on it. Loved the video as always!
Bestbuy exclusive laptops are a hidden gem if you have never noticed them before. they will come with less storage but will be so much cheaper. I've gotten 2 in the last 6 years and just update the ram and storage later on and have saved so much money.
ShortCircut does not do Reviews, just unboxings + first reaction like you would if you were to see this product in a Store

Thats why Acer is called the "crappy Asus"
HP levels of warranty experience
Might be luck as well. Had a budgetish acer laptop in college that lasted me 6+ years.
13:39 whats up with the display colour? Is he using any night mode?
10:55 dolby atmos tends to be better for making peripherals sound a bit better, as slightly better sound from trash speakers just mean slightly less trashy sound.
I'm happy with my Lenovo Legion 5 that I got for $950. Only 16GB ram though but it is upgradeable.
Alex really flexing the girlfriend thing to us all during Christmas...
Go you man 🙌🙆
Can you talk about the Bluetooth lag on windows
Definitely need some more HP laptop reviews especially Victus and Omen ones.
5:10 Intel acquired Killer a few years back... I wouldn't imagine there should be a big discrepancy between their Wi-Fi products?
Merry Christmas
1900 for this model? What do they think they selling? New gen? I’ve seen enough configurations with the same spec for 1700 maybe even less wit a 3060
The moment u sticker bombed it, I nearly change channels. But hey, the design language is quite refreshing
I'm completely opposite. Don't ruin my precious touchpad space that is already too small..
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE, I believe it's a beefier version than the 300 SE.
do not buy any acer laptop
Trackpad fingerprint reader is a throwback to the late 2000s/early 10s Sony Vaios.
More people need to know about deals like open box sales..I got my laptop which is the Maingear Vector Pro,for around $1000.
ASUS A15 TUF Mine is the R7 6800H 3050TI but they have some that are slightly better retailed for just under $1100 but goes on sale frequently for 699 which is what I got it for. That is the 2022 models at that just purchased it December 17th.
Hmm might need to pick up some UGREEN stuff instead of ankr stuff now.
I still have an Acer Predator Helios 300 2017 model. Still runs well.
I just got this at Costco, but it has an Ethernet port, 3070ti, and 240hz screen. It's way better than my Asus ROG G15 with 3080 and Ryzen 9. Only paid $1500 usd.
Mine does have a mux switch too. The fans in turbo are really loud, but the performance is noticeably better.
i really hate mad books atm but one thing i’ll always remember is how awesome the speakers are
Just picked up this laptop with these specs: 12th gen i7 rtx 3060 16gb ddr5 ram 512 ssd storage and a 165hz 14” display. For $899 on sale at Best Buy. Also didn’t pay tax so $899 was actual price. Good deal ?? Better then a MacBook Air m1 ?? Because that’s what I’m selling to help the cost lol.
I bought the same one yesterday 😂 I've been browsing around a bunch. It seems like a great deal and people really seem to like it on this best buy listing. Doesn't seem to get much better for the form factor, screen and power at 900$. Also I'd say that it's better than a Mac for the fact it can properly run games.
