The epiphone is around 1500$ new here in Canada. It’s the same price as some lower end gibsons
I literally traded in two brand new Gibson les Paul tributes for two of these 1959’s (one dark, one cherry) and I don’t regret it one bit

I don't really want to spend extra for the 59 and I plan on changing pups anyway, burstbuckers or not... but I would be curious from the guitar itself how you feel about the 50s model vs. your about 50% more expensive 59. Eventually I want both of course but I am not rich. And my Gibson money is reserved for Flying Vs. Everyone makes good Les Pauls. Only Gibson (and Epiphone) make proper Flying Vs. Dad has a Gibson custom shop 1960 model with a Mahogany top (has a really sweet sound). You *can* hear the difference, but there really isn't much in it. After nearly 30 years of playing and owning a wide spectrum of guitars, I've come to the conclusion that the tone difference between a decent affordable guitar and an astronomically expensive guitar of similar build is negligible to the listener. The reason players often seek out more expensive guitars is because of how it looks, feels, and makes them feel when they play it. Unfortunately for my wallet, those qualities are worth the extra money to me. Other players couldn't care less.

    • @aaronperrotta7055
      @aaronperrotta7055 3 роки тому +28

Spot on. I'm paying the extra money for the real deal. I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but I've owned and played numerous Gibsons and Epiphones, and the Epis can't touch the Gibsons in my opinion. Especially in feel. Well in tone also. Lol

Yep, and that's tone difference in an acoustically favourable environment. When playing in outside or in a noisy bar with a band It's hard to tell the difference - especially with other factors like pedals and amps. I agree it's the feel that's important.

After 20 years of playing, I’m convinced you’re just paying for looking cool and legit to other people who fall for marketing and branding too… like myself lol. Let’s just be honest here, we want to play what the people we grew up listening to played and Gibson and Fender paid out a lot of money to make sure those idolized players played their guitars. It gives us a sense of “authenticity” or being the real deal. “Oh I’m a real player now cuz I play the real thing now.” We’re being sold a brand. Nothing more. Man I've got a Gibson Traditional as my cheapest Gibson and I don't care what someone says, the Epi just don't compare. I've compared the two. You would have to change everything out on the Epi including pickups to get it even close. And a good sounding pickup will be $350 and then another couple hundred for hardware. This of course is my personal opinion. I've did all the customizations and it just doesn't add up to a stock cheaper Gibson. People just try to say an Epi or other economical guitar is just as good to make themselves feel better LOL

I played a Gibson inspired Epiphone while I was with my son out window shopping and I was extremely impressed with the new line. The Gibson pickups and better electronics make all the difference. The biggest issue I had with Epiphones of my youth is the muddy tone from the cheap pickups. I always swapped everything out with used Gibson parts. In the states, the upgrade is about a $300 dollar difference between Epi models. You can barely upgrade an Epiphone with “new” Gibson parts for $300. Add another $100 for a hard case that you don’t get with the less expensive line. Congrats Epiphone, you got my attention.

can level out the instruments and have a real good impression how big the difference is. the more expensive guitars are
mixed louder to give a good/better example than the budget instruments. In this case its crazy as i know how megaloud these

I couldn't agree more with you two, the Epi is great, but... there's that little something you just don't get, nor should you for the price difference. My bandmate and I dialed our amps in to sound almost identical and he was pretty awestruck that he paid $4k for his Custom and I paid $700 for mine. Of course, his will just increase in value and mine will decrease, but probably not 4-5 times as much.

I cant at this time in my life spend more on a guitar than I do on a car. So for the money I am going with the Epi 59. I would really like to heat the Epi modern LP against the Epi 59 and the Gibson's. If you are going to do a shoot out lets get all the guns in the room and see who is left standing! You are able to do that since you are a guitar store that has the inventory of a small country. So the pieces are in place. But what a great video. I think the differences are so small [Still observable ] that you could possibly put it down to the capacitors used in each, Paper-in-Oil Capacitors on the Gibson and Mallory polyester in the Epi.
It would be interesting test if you changed the caps on the Epi to the same type used on the Gibson to see if the differences were still there, and if the Epi opened up more to sound more like the Gibson.
If that did open up the Epi more, maybe Andertons could consider doing the cap change to the Epi Les Pauls making then different to those sold elsewhere.

About setups: _Maybe_ the Gibson Custom Shop can do a great setup for a Les Paul built in America and sent to Great Britain, but I tend to doubt it. As for Epiphone, there's almost no hope that a setup, no matter how great in China, where the guitar was built and put in a case for shipment halfway around the world, is going to survive that many changes in temperature, pressure and humidity as it makes its journey in a shipping container across multiple oceans and a truck's trailer across a significant fraction of a continent. I think it's unfair to compare 2 new guitars without doing setups on both of them. These are precision instruments made of wood. They need attention to ensure that they don't go out of spec.
As for this comparo, good job. These 50's Epi's seem like great guitars that can be confidently used for study, practice and gigs and give great value for the money they cost. In fact I'm super tempted to get one...

Definately paying for the Details on a Gibson, I own 2 Gibsons and 1 Epiphone (plus 2 LTDs not the same company but still relivant) The 2 Gibsons I own (both SGs of different variants, 2004 and 2005 models) even after all these years I can get the action down to half a mm with no fret buzz or anything, they setup really nice, play and sound really nice. My Epiphone sounds really nice, play quite nice but I can't get the setup excatly where I want it and the action is too high for my liking due to some high frets etc... I;ve found this to be the case on my LTDs as well. What you're paying for is the attention to detail. My 2 LTDs were cheap... however my Epiphone was actually more expensive than 1 of my Gibsons. The Epiphone was £800 from andertons not that long ago and my black SG (also from andertons in 2004) cost £500 (about £750 adjusted for inflation) The Epiphone does have some nice modern features but for £50 more.... the fit and finish isn't of the same quality of my Gibson.
If Epiphone can get it sorted then I don't think I'd buy another Gibson but at the moment its still very much a "you get what you pay for" kind of thing.
That being said... I can't see a custom shop being that much better over a us production guitar really considering the massive price gap... (will the custom shop be better.. yes... but for double the price? not worth it IMO)

My Gibson Tribute had no binding and sharp fret ends I had to file them myself. I've been playing guitar for 46 years. I started playing at age 10. Did my 1st gig at age 13 and have been steadily gigging since 1980. A couple of things I've learned is if you're gigging around town or at home either the Epi or the Gibson Les Paul will be a good choice. When you're actually on a gig nobody in the crowd gives a damn about what guitar you are playing. Is there a difference in the quality of a Gibson Les Paul Custom or Standard and their Epiphone counter parts? I believe there is a huge difference.
I play for a living and am constantly recording for various artist and i use to do a lot of national gigs. When I'm doing a session or stepping out on a stage in front of 25, 000 people I always have the high end guitars with me, it's kinda expected on those kinda gigs.
But you know an Epiphone Les Paul is not a bad guitar. And for the money they're asking you can get a nice guitar at a good price point. Whatever floats your boat is cool with me.

(above 3-4 khz and below 120 up to 350 hz on some amps).
As guitar electric distortion is multiplied basic notes then you get treble, that are multiple integers of lower, mid frequencies. I have the Epi 59 in Dark Burst. Absolute beaut of a guitar in tone and playability. Absolute bargain for the price.

I got one of the 60th Anniversary '59 LP's last week. I've had Gibsons before, but this is the first one that's going absolutely nowhere - the others went a long time ago. It'll get a set of 10-46s put on it and the very lightest of fret polishes, but that is it.

Great video again guys. Pete has said before about doing a P90 Les Paul Special shootout, so what about Comparing the Epiphone, Gibson Tribute, Gibson ‘regular’ LP Special with the custom shop version…and if you can find one an original ‘57…

Personally, I’d like some more shootouts between the custom shop vs the guitars on the higher end of the production line.

The moral of the story; Les Paul’s sound killer, period.

Epiphone never sounded so good. Hated them for years until last year when I saw your original video about these epi 59s. Now I want one. The opening jam was out of this world. Sounded like real Les Pauls.

Thanks guys! How about a shoot out across a range of Gibson humbuckers to hear the differences from standards to custom shop and Les Pauls to SGs.

If you can afford the Gibson Custom Shop '59, good on you. If you can't, you'll be very pleased with the '59 Epiphone Inspired by Gibson. It's great value and sounds terrific through a Marshall or other fine amp.

The custom shop 58s are quite cheaper than the 59 and you get the identical guitar save for the neck carve . I see no point in buying the custom 59 when the 58 can be had for considerably less . The gibson 50s standard with upgraded pickups are as good as any of them . I have an epi 59 a gibson custom 58 and a Gibson 50s standard with seth Lover neck and whole lotta humbucker bridge and it sounds every bit as good as the 58 I am going to put an extra set of custombuckers i have in the gibson 50s just to see how close it sounds to the 58 custom shop

Thanks for showing this with the affordable pedal board. It makes it a lot more 'real-life relevant' to most guitar players and what we have access to
