I love how you start with feet and inches for the size of the plywood, then quickly changed for centimeters for the distance between nails hahaha Thank you for the tutorial, that's the best one I found, even 3 years later! I'll try one now hope it will end up as good as yours!
Hello Jack. I did some string art when I was about 5 years old in school, I am now about to turn 71. I am really wanting to do some string art but don't have a clue about how to achieve the look I would like. I love the art Deco era and have just decorated my living room in touches of it. It was all about shapes then. Arches and curves but also boxes and lines. I just don't have a clue how to go about this. Can you help. You have been the only tutorial that really caught my eye. Also, well done with that piece as it looks stunning. Shirley from the UK.
I'm doing this design on a significantly smaller scale, and this video was really helpful for me to understand how it all goes together. Thank you. ^_^
I can't believe how much attention this video has been getting over the past few months and its amazing. I recently added this string art to my website, jtwoodworks.org, so if you guys want to buy your own, now you can!
My son had some of this art on his apartment wall. I took several photos hoping I could get into this one day. It somehow reminds me of the heavens in a near death experience. I am her now and I believe you are my teacher. I could do without the music. I've had to mute and follow the cc directions.
When I do string art I usually go from one nail at one side to the other side then I loop around the next nail on the same side before I go to the second nail at the first side. By doing it that way you will have more "parallel" lines which enhances the illusion giving it a more 3d effect.
I’m sorry that you were having trouble with the audio. I really need to get a microphone so when I do, the audio will sound much better. I have some videos that I’m currently editing so I’ll make sure that the audio quality is better than this video.
Hi from Canada . I would love to try and make a beautiful piece of artwork, like yours. Maybe you could tell me where the best place is to buy nails. I have been looking online. They seem to be a bit pricey. Hope you can help me . Love your work😊
I generally purchase them from Home Depot. Although, I don’t know if this store is in your area. You really only need 1 inch, or 2.5 cm long picture hanging nails. For a pack of 200, it should cost you more than $5.
Hi I need your channel I'm going to subscribe this is my very first time so I'm really excited I love string art it's one of my favorite things and I'm thinking about doing something in my bedroom on the wall we have an agency kind of thing going so I was thinking about maybe some koi fish in a yin Yang or no I was just trying to think of something do you think you could make something like that? I'd love to go look at your shop and see what you have!
Hey @Jack, I am a beginner and I would love to do it so much, may you please guide me, what kind of string should I use? Wood materials & I didn't get you well how many nails have putted from one nail to another, if it was cm to another or what.... Kindly assist.
Would it be easier to use the ruler to find the 14th, 21st, 28th, etc nails since each point was a cm apart? I love this video. It helps to draw/paint them also. Although I’m thinking I might like to paint the background and use string art to intensify the shapes. Thanks so much, Jack.
Yes, it would be much easier to use a ruler to find all the marks. I didn't even think about that until I read your comment. I also really like your idea of painting the background then adding string. That might be one of my future videos! Thanks for your support.
Thanks for the comment. I actually don't know the thread size, it's been a while since I made this video. I think I left a link in the description to the thread that I used.
Great idea! I just looked up some photos and that projects looks awesome. I’ll get working on one as soon as possible. Thanks for the video suggestion!
So sorry to be responding to your question this late but if you're making this project for yourself, the thickness of the thread is up to you. You can decide. If you want the thickness that I used, the thread is roughly .0163" or .414 mm. if you're wondering the number of the thread, I'm not sure what it is but I have a link in the description to the thread that I used for this project.
After I cut the sheet of plywood, the final dimensions of the board are 19 3/4 inches wide, 39 1/4 inches long, and 1/2 inches thick. Hopes this helps!
You say that there are 109 marks needed in the diagonal. Do you count both of the corners as a mark? I did it exactly like you sad, but from corner to corner I do have 110 marks.
It’s okay if you have 110 marks. I’ve built this a few time before with more than 109 marks. Just keep following my video but when you add the last color, you’ll have one more nail to pass and you color may overlap at the middle of the diagonal line. If this is still confusing to you, I’m here to help.
It doesn't matter what size nails you use but I used 3/4 inch nails and the string is about 0.125 millimeters. I have a link in the description if you want to purchase the thread I used.
I can find the nails pretty easily but as I live in Germany they sometimes have different descriptions for the thread and wool than the US. It sounds like its really thin like you’d use to sew something like clothing or is it thicker? Could the thread fade?
Yes the thread is very thin and it's used for sewing but you can also use thicker thread if you want. It's up to you to decide. The thread will most likely fade only if it is in direct sun light for multiple hours a day for many weeks. If you build one and display it inside, you should be fine. If you have any other questions, I'll gladly answer them.
Hey Jack, this is such a wonderful work, but I just wanted to ask you a question.. I’m planning to do this work but in a bigger size and I wanted to make it in a 150cm length and 65cm in width (or could you pls describe a suitable width) I would like to know what would be the dimensions for the nails and could you pls tell me from where I should start and also how much I would have to add in the diagonal line. Thank you so much for this video, it’s great 👍🏼
I’m glad to help but right now I have to study for some big tests that are coming up and I don’t have the time at the moments to measure and figure out the dimensions that you need. I’ll be able to get back to you tomorrow morning. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Sorry to be responding so late but I think I figured out a solution for you. In my tutorial, I explained that there are 50 nails, 1 centimeter apart from each other and half a centimeter from the edge, on the top and bottom and 109 nails placed through the diagonal. I know that you want yours a little bigger than what I demonstrated. If I were you, I would keep adding nails on the top and bottom until you're half a centimeter away from the edge. Say I placed 60 nails. On the diagonal, I'll do the same. Add more nails until I reach the end. Say that I have 119 nails on the diagonal. Because I've added 10 nails to the diagonal and on both ends of the sheet of plywood, I would divide that by 2, to get 5, and add 5 more steps or loops to the string. When adding the string, in my demonstration I strung the white string around ten nails but since the board is bigger, I'll loop the string around 15 nails. Of course, this will be different because your board size will be different. Just to recap, count the number of nails that you'll add to the end and the diagonal, divide it by 2, then add that number when adding your string. If this is still confusing, just leave another comment.
I’m not completely sure what are the best nails. I’ve made multiple string art projects and I’ve found that 1 inch picture hanging nails work really well.
Personally, I like to use fine sewing thread. I do know that some people like to use thicker string but its all up to your preference. I have a link in the description to the exact string that I used in the video if that's helpful.
Yes, you can. I know this video is quite old but there should be a link in the description. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll comment another amazon link to similar thread.
Basically what I do is for every centimeter, I add one nail. For example if there are 10 centimeters in a line, I would add 10 nails to that line. I also try to make the wooden board an even number so it’s easier to calculate the number and placement of the nails.
My main goal with this project was to make the piece look like a sun set/ setting sun. There isn’t really a specific meaning or message but that’s the theme.
There is a link in the description for the type of string that I used and for the nails, I used 1 inch, picture hanging nails. Any type of nails work as long they’re under 1 inch long.
The plywood is 1/2 inch think or 1.2 centimeters. I then use 1 inch or 2.5 centimeter long nails. Because the nail is twice as long as the plywood, the nail stick out 1/2 inch or 1.2 cm.
I love how you start with feet and inches for the size of the plywood, then quickly changed for centimeters for the distance between nails hahaha Thank you for the tutorial, that's the best one I found, even 3 years later! I'll try one now hope it will end up as good as yours!

In the video you said 19 1/4 by 39 3/4 but then you say 19 3/4 by 39 1/4. So which one is right?
