Absolutely beautiful bike with a lot of character. I'm thinking of test riding it and selling it to my GS 1300 if I like it. But the price is hefty. With all the extras that are necessary (e.g. handlebar end mirrors, spoked wheels, comfort package) you end up with a good 18K euros. You have to want that. Thank you for the Video!
Liked the R9T better. There is something off with the design. The rear seems to be a little on the short side. And they have become more expensive, if I'm not mistaken.
yea, get the R9T for a retro naked bike and the R18 for a cruiser. For me they both excel in their category and somehow the R12 feels like the worst of both worlds. but I have not ridden it and it might surprise me just as many bikes have in the past.
Correct! The rear fender is bobbed way too short and it looks odd from a side view. BNW chased the cruiser look a little too hard. I have been a Beemer rider since 1975.
@@wickedtwix It won't surprise you...I have an R9T scrambler and it feels like a solid classic in comparison with the R12. The R12 feels cheap and plasticky. It lacks substance...I was so happy to get back on my old R9T.
Wonderful review with every detail covered! Enjoyed every second of it. Thanks for your hard work Scott. I was between Triumph Speed Master and this one, and changed my mind at the very last minute and got myself a R12 a month ago. Never looked back. It is a fantastic bike to ride and enjoy a beautiful day. Cruiser vibe is awesome!!!
Really like this model bike in many ways. It needs a functional front fender option IMO. Maybe /2 or /5 -style fender option as a take off point for a new-heritage BMW fender style? If it’s like a /5, I would vote for a rear fender option similar as well. If not that, at least some full front fender option with some design roots in the past. This bike with a luggage rack, detachable BMW bags (or some kind of soft luggage option) and a tank bag might be a wonderful, basic experience continent crosser.
BMW did such an amazing job with the styling of the R18 cruiser but this, i dont know it looks like a wierd mix of a naked or standard bike with a bobbed cruiser rear fender. I am sure it rides great though
Excellent as ever Scott. Off to Spain (from UK) on my RS on Sunday for 3 weeks. Pray for good weather for me please !

Expensive as hell. As the pure and tracker disappeared from the lineup, leaving only the top most expensive one (my preferred one, to be honest). I tried this one... loved the feeling of it, but as I am not used to feet forward and long(er) gerashift pedals, made me miss the neutral almost 90% of the times.
Thank you Scott for the (once again), interesting video, but above all merits on the work you do in general, for your impressions has a rider, which is, what I value specially. You say that this bike has soul and you compare it to Moto Guzzi kind of soul, in this cruiser style of bike. I haven’t tested this new R12 Nine T, but I’ve already tested the more roadster new version and in that, the quick shifter is fine, better in my opinion than the same device in the GS 1300, more direct, less clunky. The seat felt way more comfortable, and the suspension sensibly more forgiving. It would be a motivation to trade the prior iteration of the bike, if I had this bike only, to do all kind of riding. If it weren’t the case, I wouldn’t trade it because the new bike feels more refined, yes, but also, seemed to lose that soul, that Character of the prior iteration. So, this cruiser version must be very different from her sister and apart from that also less expensive. Can be an excellent choice for the one who appreciate the boxer engine, maybe not so peppy on the higher revs but still strong in the low and medium spectrum of power and torque. A little like Triumph applies to their Bonneville range, the same engine of 1200 cc but different maps, the higher torque and the higher power, respectively on the Scrambler and speed Master, the speed twin and the thruxton?
Sadly they are, in my opinion, cheap and tacky and way way overpriced in comparison with the old R9T models. I wanted to like it so ride one when I had my R9T scrambler in for a service. I couldn't wait to get back on my scrambler...everything about the old bike felt better, more substantial, better build quality etc
The r nine t was a cool bike, with the old look. This is just a new pure model for the cheaper entry with new look and marketing. I wish they would make a r nine t with the r18 engine. I think this will coming... thx for sharing, keep on doing your videos. Die Linke zum Gruß
If I ever went back to the cruiser platform, this would be number one on my list to check out. It’s a beautiful bike…if this great model can’t make inroads into the American cruiser market (like the R18, Triumph Thunderbird 1600, etc. seemingly failed to do), BMW and other European manufacturers might as well throw in the towel for good.
I don’t see this bike as a cruiser as much as it is meant for either shorter riders, or women. Beautiful bike, is there a way to install a longer shock so your voice won’t chatter over bumps?
Hi! I’m a follower from Italy and really like your reviews and your style. I tried this BMW today and I’m quite disappointed. The seat is horrible, small and hard. The brakes are weird, no modulation. There’s lot of on-off in every gear. Then it’s for sure easy to handle and quite funny but the price is crazy for such a bike. One month ago I tried the nineT 2024 version and there’s no comparison. I own a 1250 gs and a Daytona 660 Ciao!
Thank you! Interesting, it seems like the bike you rode didn't get set-up correctly (brakes & throttle response). Seat AGREED! But it's a cruiser style bike, so I kind of expect that kind of seat from a cruiser. I've never been able to ride a cruiser longer than a couple of hours and want to get off and this bike is the same. Take care, Scott
Love that colour. Great handlebars. Beefy wheels. Nice clock. Not sure about the size for a 6 feet guy...would love the black with the white rime classic colour. I am afraid it will be expensive to me. Can see V7 last model at 7k or bonnies at 8k second hand here in Spain. Hard to beat.
Hi Scott. Thanks for the great review. I’m the same height and inseam as yourself and when I sat on the R12 I wondered if the standard bars would be too narrow for the size of bike and the extended wheelbase. BMW offer a flatter wider bar as an extra which would pitch you further forward and I wanted to ask you opinion on whether you would change from the standard bars if you were to buy the bike yourself. Safe riding. Steve, UK 🇬🇧
I got a good laugh from you saying ( with your voice crackling) how good the suspension is, while the bike and everything mounted on the bars are jiggling up and down.
Configurated the roadster on the BMW web-site: Absolutely ridiculous. What ripp -off! Closed the page and shook my head in disbelief. More than 21k EUR? What for? And the name, reminding of the classic R 90 S, is no longer apt. Failure, BMW! A toy for the well-off lady, in my opinion. But a motocycle? No longer...
Tolle Videos, ich schaue sie immer sehr gerne! Kein bling bling roar. Einfach ein "Typ", der Lust auf Motorräder hat. Schade, dass es keine Videos mehr auf Deutsch gibt - auch wenn ich das verstehe. Weiter so!
As an R9T scrambler owner I was keen to try one of the R12s out. When I had a service I took an R12 nineT out for the day...I wanted to like it but it comparison with the old R9T it felt like a cheap plastic half imitation. Even the BMW dealer said the old bikes are a 'lot more bike for the money'. The bodywork and parts felt cheap in comparison...sure it had the same fun factor in terms of around town nippy riding but I wouldn't swap my old R9T scrambler for the new models. Everything, right down to the side stand felt cheap...and the R12 bike is more expensive! I tour on my r9T scrambler, I wouldn't even dream of it on the new model.Big fail BMW.
Think it looks great, like the utilitarian old war era models. Looks beefy. (I have an R69) But this looks functional compared to the try-hard R18 big cruisers. Dig the color combo too, the merlot and all the black accents and wheels looks tough. And simple tech but why they detuned it I’ll never understand the reasoning.
It’s the “fora’s” that make me wonder; fora boxer, fora cruiser, fora dry clutch, soul . . . fora BMW? One of the posted comments may be worth a debate: It’s the rider’s character that determines the bike’s character?
Good review, but sorry man, the R18 Pure has far more soul. Still lots of plastic used compared to the R18. The design of the rear fender doesn't look right to me. The R9T EURO 3 and 4 also sound much better.
I was always syper happy that I am 198cm tall. Until I started looking into motorcycles 😄. Such a beautiful bike, too bad it's not really for above average tall people...
Nice work. Thank you. But this bike is not a good looker in my eyes. Those wheels looks like something from a toy. Rear mudguard, front mudguard brackets...well, not for me! The other one however! Make a film about that one, please. Thank you! Cheers!
im really curious at what bmw is smoking, that they think after 10 years this is an accaptable sequel design of the legendary 9t. this looks ass to be honest. if you remove the badge, you would mistake it for a moto guzzi
Those 2 monster growths growing out from either side of the bike...why-o-why do they do this? Shaft drive is nice. But the huge cylinders, protruding out from the sides, is a deal breaker for me.
Think BMW messed this bike up going down the cruiser path. The R9T was a popular bike in my country and now I see these R12 heavily discounted already in dealerships. To me the bike looks off in the aesthetics department. Not knowing what it wants to be, halfway between a retro and a cruiser.
I’m a lifelong boxer lover. Owned seven, and currently have last year’s UrbanGS, lightly modded. But this one? I just can’t get my head around the looks. I’m sure it’s great mechanically, but I find it to be plain ugly from every angle. A look only a mother could love.
The R12 has lost a huge amount of individuality compared to the R NineT. It looks like a soft chopper now 👎🏻 It may be a good bike but it’s lost the connection to the original „RNineT-Idea“. That’s quite sad actually.
