Fun fact: If your device (probably laptop, e.g. Macbook) supports Thunderbolt, a malicious Type-C charger can get full read+write access to your RAM, where all your data is unencrypted and all the code can be changed to do whatever. If the "charger" manages to convince your device that it is "safe", that is.
At least Mac users got MagSafe back
You need to flash the thunderbolt controller to do that.
Also TB4 requires the system to have Kernel DMA Protection which offers some protection
@@AltonV DMA protection is nice, but you never know where more security holes could be, sadly... This side is still far less protected than, say, network interfaces.
By "flashing the controller", do you mean the Thunderspy attack? I was thinking about the Thunderclap exploit, it only requires plugging the malicious device in, and as I understand it is far from being completely patched, some holes remain.
I already laughed at the egregious use of the bolt cutters to clip the cable, but b*tch-slapping Colton had me on the floor
Plot twist: Wall socket was apparently safe. But this guy keeps slapping his friend and steals his data using this little Chinese usb drive kind of thing.
LTT, Dhar Mann, and the Manufacturers of the USB stick all had a collab
Over here in the Middle Ages we don't have random usb ports hanging around, so you have to use your own powerbrick anyway.
They saved 500$ making this short
People charge outside without their bricks?
Mostly in airports in my experience.
I'll bet making a charge-only cable would be real easy. Just take that one you cut, strip the ends just a little resolder only the power and ground cables (usually red and black) and leave the 2 data cables severed.
If you cut open a usb cable there are four wires. Two are for sending power and two are for sending data. Just cut the data wires. Usually they are green and white while the power wires are red and black.
Actually, I've been at a conference where researchers found a way to hack your phone using only the power pins.
Funniest bit is when I asked if instead of a data blocker we could use a simple power bank. After a minute of silence the researcher said yes.
wouldn't your phone ask you if you wanna permit data transfer through your cable?
Not if they are using a security flaw in your phone. Rooting and jailbreaking is often done this way. And iPhones were hacked using the calendar app recently..
@@savagesarethebest7251 Exactly, so much misinfo in this comments section from people saying "just turn it off" or " just set it to charge only" when any multitude of attacks exist in the wild that can bypass most security because you gave them physical access...
@@xmlthegreat so we are supposed to assume there is a massive security flaw with cable charging, but going to the internet is fine? Using Bluetooth for headphones is fine too? Connecting to a public WiFi? Owning apple products?
@@stixinst5791 if you use an apple product, that's definitely a security issue because yes, there were several webkit exploits in the past where malicious code could be run without any user interaction. There's a good chance some exploits similar to that are still out there. And yes, Bluetooth/ wifi everything is also insecure... But those channels are slightly more isolated from the system than the USB port because that's also used for diagnostics and repairs etc so it's more integrated at a lower level, in terms of what sub systems are accessible on usb... After all you need to use that port legitimately for debugging and flashing as well.
Isn't there generally an option you have to okay if you want to send data from your phone via charging
Violence and sexual innuendo always gets the point across.
This is like recommending a 6 point harness instead of a normal seatbelt.
easy tip:
1:tap on build number 7 time unlock developer option
2: search for developer option and open it
3:in developer option find select USB configuration
4:in (select USB configuration) select, charge only
The case for permanently carrying around a power bank grows stronger by the day.
Agreed.
there was already a device like this, uCharger, but it's a bit difficult to find now and prices are insane
Not Appropriate To Cut The USB 10-Ft Cable From Strangers, and Hitting Them
The fact that we’re in an era that requires us to do this is truly sad.
i think the usb just cuts off the data cables, which are sometimes useful for fast charging. basically:
- charger: "hey, you accept fast charging?"
- phone: "yea up to 50W"
- charger: *uses fast charging*
Plot twist, it wasn't an electronic condom, rather it was some sort of a rubber ducky
Just set
Default USB Configuration to
[ Charging Phone only ]
from the developer options.
[ No need of an external USB Data Blocker. ]
I have a broken USB cable that doesn't do data anymore but the wires even for fast charging are still good. I am using that one in e.g. hotels.
It's actually still very uncommon for this type of thing to be needed and there are USB cables that don't send data, you can normally just tell by looking at them
Never heard of charging in public areas causing security issues.
If anyone of you is thinking about the potential disadvantages of using two wires instead of four or six/(vooc is 7 i think):
**No fast charging, only 10W max**
Educational & entertaining. Colton is an excellent actor. And the unexpected voice change for Adam was funny; but the voice still sounds like a real person!
the lack of a data line will reduce the charging speed to 5w 1A. Average phone will need about 6-8 hours to full charge while turned on
Remember kids, don’t just go around putting your sick in random holes. Use protection.
In an Android phone, it's easy. Just go to developer mode and select charge only in power options
its amazing that everyone has forgotten that power only USB cables exist and should be used in situations like that. We actually have them in our IT vending machines at my job for like $10 but i keep my own in my bag.
I love how they're using an anker block considering everything that happened
I know how those things work. They have a usb connector with only vbus and gnd connected. No data+ or data-. An alternative would be a charger with no data capabilities but those mostly come in micro usb.
I am glad that Adam is using his powers for good for once
That slap was personal
Now I kinda want to see someone just drop a bug that converts the UA-cam app button to open to crab rave instead of the home page on a bunch of public charging stations to spread awareness.
There are also malicious people that modify ports and flash drives to apply high voltage to damage your device.
