Matt, actually the trans lines going into the radiator go Into the trans fluid heater, it's a small core designed to heat the transmission fluid on cold days. You can get a trans cooler off of the GM 2500 series. Your truck has the bolt on adaptor in front of the radiator. The best way to change everything you mentioned is pull the engine. You can change to oil pump pickup tube O-ring, the rear block plate gasket, and the rear main seal, easier, if the engine is out in the open. I'd change anything that's hard to get to. My 5.3 has over 420K miles, and runs as strong as the day I bought it new. Mobile 1. . 10w30. Mobile 1 trans fluid. I use Amsoil rear end gear oil. and AC Delco transfer case oil Part number #10-4017, you can get O'Reilly's to order it for you. 👍
Man like my son did he got a 5.3 from a junker pulled it out and all apart resealed everything over time and extra money gave him experience lapping valves and shit like that. Redid all the gaskets and new exaust bolts and basically everything so when the current engine he has quits or gets real bad hes got a backup in the garage on a engine stand ready to throw in. Only problem is these things just don't quit! They are good engines and will run broken in many places. its just way easier to have the engine out for a reseal cuz its a battle otherwise.
I like your style. Everytime I see one I want to collect them as backups. They are fun to reseal when they are out. You never really know the condition when you get one used lol. He sounds like me.
Thanks Matt. Great video with lots of info. I've suffered almost all of these leaks. One of the most annoying ones is the 4L60e to transfer case. It can leak! And if your seal is truly fucked, the transmission can pump fluid into the transfer case!
Thanks for posting this! I need to find my leak. I am just replacing o rings and gaskets one at a time till i find it😂 its somewhere on the rear engine. But i dont think rear main.
I have heard of the shift lever on the transmission having a seal that can also leak. GM trucks from 89 to 13 4x4 the front diffs love to leak. For some reason the driver side leaks first which is the easy side, the passenger side lasts longer but requires you to split the housing extension off to remove the shaft.
Thanks for the vid. My oil cooler block off plate, oil pan, and rear main have been done and I still have some leak from the bellhousing area. Hope I don't have to try to do the rear main again, lol
This is the best oil leak video I have seen yet! I have a 5.3 in a 09 chevy van that is leaking like a stuck pig. When I get the RPMs up , the oil pressure goes from 40 where it always use to sit , way up to 70 or more. Then oil starts pouring out of god knows where and getting on my catalitic converter and burning up. Such a mess and now there is so much oil everywhere it seems like its coming from the front of the engine and going all over. Have you ever seen something like this?
Thank you! I'd check the oil pressure sensor on the top back of the engine, and then check the camshaft position sensor on the top of the engine too. Sounds like it's spraying oil out. The pressure should get above 40 PSI at idle up to 60 PSI under load then drop back down, but it sounds like you have a bad leak.
@@MattsShop Lucky for me I can see back there when I pull the doghouse off and it seems ok, Yeah this engine was always at 40 until the leak started Seems like its coming from up front somewhere so maybe under the waterpump ? I am taking this long weekend to find it! Thanks for the response! Hope your wrenching goes well this week!
Your work on how the valve covers are updated they still have three places but there slanted cuts with two small holes on driver side passenger side is just 3 slots one big hole they clogg an oil can't drain back thru is the issue u just add holes an make the main drain hole larger
Hi Matt i hope you can give me some advice on my 03 Silverado LS which has a steady oil leak 3 seconds and it seems its coming from above the starter motor any tips will be appreciated . Keep up the great work n keep on trucking...
I have the same truck and changed the rear main seal and new oil pan and its still leaking very little not on the floor but by the oil fliter and the sides of the oil pan/rear main seal
My 99 5.3 recently started hearing faint lifter noise while idling at red light or in traffic and when i get going it goes away.im guessing worst case is oil pump right?
Fixing to do my rear main with a new plate seal and the actual seal itself. Got the felpro brand Hoepfully can trust it. Recently did a felpro oil pan gasket, still appears to be leaking even after the RTV on all 4 corners and letting it set overnight.
Man I tell you what. Owning vehicles is a pain in the ass. Either you buy used and always have to fix it, or you buy new and deal with brutal monthly payments (unless you’re financially set with no house payment). But then, all this new stuff has so much electronic BS in it that you’re better off buying something at least 10yrs old.
I feel like you forgot intake gaskets leaking oil? My 5.3 burns/leaks a little just behind the passenger valve cover and onto the starter (I've already changed both valve cover gaskets and updated driver cover). Normally 800 miles for every quart lost, so annoying about to gamble getting someone to change my intake gaskets since it's never been done.
What are your thoughts on replacing a real main seal on a truck that isn’t leaking yet. I have the transmission completely pulled for a rebuild. No leaking but don’t want to ever ever ever remove the transmission again. lol
Great vid. Subscribed,! Ive got an 8.1 in my truck. Its burning off oil on the passenger side manifold and also drips a bit of oil. I think its somewhere near the top of the engine but cant locate it.
Criminally underrated... and ive been to the depths of UA-cam as a lifelong grease monkey, turned weekend worrior that has a passion for learning and trouble shooting...
I got rebuild cammed 5.3 it doesn’t leak but it burns about 1 quart in between oil changes I’ve met with many mechanics and they all said it’s normal I’ve never really had to add oil till like 3,500 miles and do my oil change between 3,000 and 3,500 my oil is not really dirty at all it’s clean for the most part but I’ve seen people freak out over burn oil it’s normal I would assume
I’ve also heard the oil cooler leaks on these as well. I have the same problem, other than I’ve only replaced the oil pan gasket. Was trying to decide to do the rear main, the rear gaskets, or the oil cooler. Dangit. OR, just keep her fed full of oil because I just lose 1.5qts every 5k miles.
@@MattsShop and I don’t lose oil but I do lose oil over the span of 3500 miles but it’s a quart of oil if it was a leak it would be more but yeah man I wipe it down and nothing comes back on the cover I don’t think it’s oil
Oil pick up tube oring leaks atomized oil and air in block cause loss or erratic pil pressure always do this when doing oil pan... 20 year old truck you can go pn forever with "while you're in there"!!!!
General Motors should be ashamed of themselfs, there is no reason to have so many leaks on their products. My 2000 z71 is leaking in most of the places you showed plus transfer case pinion seal and rear end pinion seal. My 1999 f 250 with more miles, has no leaks. My next pickup won't be a General Motors. Oh I didn't mention the Z 71 rocker panels have rusted through, f 250 has no rust.
If Chevys are a piece of junk then I would be curious to know what cars or trucks you think are better. Don't get me wrong, some Chevys definitely are junk, but the GMT800s are simply some of the best all around vehicles to ever enter the market.

You're welcome. It's always a couple of seals/gaskets once they get old they all seem to leak! That oil cooler block off plate is easy though.
@Anthony-du3he Check your oil pressure senser. Mine is leaking pretty bad. If you have oil on top of the transmission case that might be why.
I have heard of the shift lever on the transmission having a seal that can also leak. GM trucks from 89 to 13 4x4 the front diffs love to leak. The valve cover on that side, crankshaft postion sensor, cam shaft o-ring (rare), or oil pressure sensor. They can all leak and drip down there.
Can you do one for transmissions leaks. I have one that’s at the back of 4wd 4l80e. Between the output shaft and back pan.

Works on steering pumps, that’s where I 1st used it, put in the oil, brake fluid IS oil.
