Not all European countries are in the EU so many do need passports. Since last months even those border-free countries have intensified border controls, at least Germany said they are doing it for 6 months. So no even Europe is not free for all. I drove from Austria to Germany last week and saw the border control myself.
Yes South Africa is building walls because we are tired of illegal immigrants and stolen cars crossing our borders. Peoole are dying during car hijacking. Moreover Africans in general don't respect each other's countries. They have this entitlement mentality that South Africa is for Africans so they can come and do as they please in SA. As a country, we don't have anything against Africans who come to SA legally and do legal businesses. The ones that are fighting walls are the ones who want to come illegally and illegal activities. Unity is Not about coming to SA, let's unite at trade level, whilst we remain in our countries. Flocking to SA will never bring unity.

When Covid hit, they closed their birders very fast, and we get told to not have borders because the EU supposedly has none, told this by people who have never even seen an EU border.

People behave as if illegal migration is no cost to host countries. This has massive consequences to healthcare, education system & social services. We are the only if not one of the few with the most comprehensive social security system, we have to have borders because people would do anything to gain access to those services.
Even our communication and electricity systems are not coping with the demand.
Other services can’t even budget properly because Treasury uses statistics to designate funds.

Hijacking is a huge problem in South Africa and the fact that their syndicate is linked to other countries makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to track them so building a wall is a good start but stronger systems need to be put in place so that the criminals can get arrested.
