  • Professor Fink describes the structure of a neuron and how they are categorized structurally and functionally. Included in the description are unipolar, bipolar & multipolar shaped neurons and sensory neurons, interneurons & motorneurons. Interneurons are located entirely within the CNS. Sensory Neurons are found within Nerves of the PNS and transmit information to the CNS. Motorneurons are also found within Nerves of the PNS and transmit commands from the CNS to the effector organs of the body.

Slapping and forced large movement of his body enhances input, an excellent lecture.

Fantastic lecture, as always but not entirely correct. Neurogenesis does occur in the hippocampus in the adult brain and is vitally important in learning and memory (see experiments by Gage et al in the 1990s).

You are correct. And thank you for making this point. HOWEVER, all of the rest of the Nervous System generally lacks the capacity to undergo cell division, and I wished to emphasize the characteristics of the Nervous System in general.

oh I think I've heard that bit of before about you only have a certain number of neurons. So if you feel like your neurons were burned out does that mean you lost your brain cells? This is so depressing

+akrrrs 1 Thank you for the link. I was aware that some neurons in the hippocampus apparently retain their ability to undergo cell division. HOWEVER, this is clearly the exception to the general principle that neurons can not undergo cell division.

+professorfink Of course - sorry, I didn't mean to be pedantic. It must be difficult to get everything across in the lectures. Please accept my sincere thanks for your great lectures. I've spent the last few days refreshing my knowledge of physiology and anatomy. You really break things down and explain things in such a clear and interesting manner. I'm an early career researcher (in neuropathology, if you hadn't guessed!) and am just starting to lecture undergraduates so you've really provided some inspiration and knowledge (!) that I'll aspire to pass on. Thanks again. Ahmad
