Good review as usual. For the money I’ll keep using my 16” Estwing ($40 now, I got mine for about $25). It’s been a constantly great performing axe over the years and the price left me money enough for food to cook over a fire. In this case the money left over would buy a banquet.
Great review, Luke. It’s a beautiful tool. I would consider buying it for $179, the price currently listed, but you’re right. It should come with the sheath and I think, the handle guard.
Liked it at first, price turned me off. I bought a Gransfors Bruks small forrest axe for $106 from a large outdoor retailer and it came with a nice sheath.
Super review, Luke! Your skills with an axe is amazing. This Woox A1X is a beautiful hand axe and that would be a problem with me...it's too pretty especially with the leather sheath and handle protector. I use all of my hatchets and hand axes and to the point of almost abusing them. When I return home however, they get resharpened almost immediately, ready for the next trip out. One of my favorite hand axes was from Lowe's for around 20 bucks...bought it two years ago. The blade was so-so sharp but the wood grain direction was good and it was American hickory; had no protective wrap or sheath. I filed the blade and used a puck to hone it, wrapped the handle near the head with 550 paracord and bought a leather sheath from Amazon. On every overland camping trip I place it in my spare tire well for wood processing if a camp fire is desired. Most times I just use a portable BBQ pit for cooking and to have a warming fire. For backpacking overnighters I carry a Schrade SCAXE 10 which is fairly lightweight but effective for lighter wood processing. Another small hatchet work horse is the Fiskars X7. None of my hand axes or hatchets cost more than $50 which include paracord and leather sheaths from Amazon or Walmart but they all work and satisfy my needs. Being retired I'm all about budgeting for my gear needs.

I was also curious if the axe itself was a novelty or if it was a practical functional hand axe. You convinced me entirely and put mind at ease I truly appreciate your review sir!
Your test/demo illustrates why a one-hand axe is a compromise built for wall-hanging beauty but not practicality. Exactly the same head, on a 24 inch 2-hand handle, would be much more useful and very little more trouble to carry.
Essentially you could put this in or with a decent size pack, a longer handle will always give a stronger impact but you just want to say you have the bigger stick and its not always better as a longer handle can break more easily if a mistake was made, that would be compromised lol
I've been a woodworker and a lover of tools my whole life. What I've learned over the years is that there is a point at which practicality ends and glamor begins. Buying tools, I usually end up buying the next- to-most-expensive product, because it offers the most pragmatic benefits. This axe is impressive, but it might just exceed that pragmatic threshold.
Right on Luke. That so far looks like a nice hand axe. I'll be interested to see how your review of it goes over the months. I would recommend a CRKT Woods Chogan, but the handle was all messed up when I got mine in the mail. It's a tomahawk and it's like they pressure fit the handles on. I ordered a new handle stripped it, sanded it, scorched it, boiled linseed oiled it, and did a little filing in the eye. Now, WOW! What a gem. It goes everywhere with me. I know you do "as is" from the factory. So I can't say "yeah go get one" knowing how mine was from the factory, before I fixed it up.
I think what I like is the heft it seems to have and that handle looks impressive the heat treat is the key to say the least but as you say price . If I were a young guy or gal and not 77 years old and thinking as I do. I am only going to buy this once and it's for a life time it would be justifiable. I have been using my dads Estwing since the late 50s dad said here it's your's now. I did get another one for my grand son 2 years ago they just seem to be indestructible.Great review I do love the looks of that beast . Happy trails
thanks Luke, nice that the axe is made here, but at that price, should come with a sheath and the handle protection should be solid, not moving up and down the handle and twirling around. Beautiful piece though. Have a great next adventure, and thank you for all your work.
The Snow and Nealley belt axe and Hudson Bay are Made In the USA again may be a good option. They come with a leather sheath as well. Pretty reasonable 60-70$ Thank brother awesome channel
I love my cheap Husqvarna axe 🪓 it needed a little work out of the box but I tend to sharpen and modify any axe that I buy anyway so it made sense to buy a cheaper less refined axe that is still Swedish steel and a quality hickory handle! If I remember right I think I paid around $35-40 for it and I've had it for a few years now putting it thru hell and back and it just keeps on doing what I ask of it...
Much love in the view....love the ax, looks great, looks like it performs very well but couldn’t see my paying that price right now. Keep up the great videos
Price point reminds me of a Busse Knife. Absolutely beautiful, bomb proof, no doubt that it's well made and would serve you well. However, at that price, if I so much as got a scratch on it, I would cry! So, not getting one lol! Great review though bro! Thank you for sharing!
My favorite is the Estwing E45A camper's axe. I wrapped the handle from the top of the rubber grip to the yellow line with 550 para cord over grip tape then poured boiling water over the para cord to shrink it. This gives me both a full size camp axe and a hand axe/hatchet. I think I paid $50 at my local Home Depot and I have yet to break it. Believe me, it should have broken by now.
Sweet Ax man!! I love the hickory handle and the leather protector. Very nice!! On sale for $179 worth every penny from what i see. I want one! I originally wanted a Brux Almike Ax but after seeing this seems very worth the $40 extra. Good stuff! Stay safe!
I agreee .... BUT: The other day, when I was on a hike I managed to jam and break of the tip of my saw. I was lucky I only lost an inch and could continue processing wood since it was rather cold and I needed some warm food/tea! But in reality I was only 2km away from my car, no real danger! But this experience made me realise how fragile the saw is compared to an axe. In a longer 'survival' scenario a broken saw might be a real issue. For me and my purposes - day hikes, some overnighters, never too far from civilization - the saw is still the better solution: it is safer, not as noisy and in my hands also faster than the axe.
Sorry Luke,, I use Fiskars axes, hackets, mols, and hand saws. I paid for all 4 pieces for half of the cost of a woox hand axe. And they come with plastic blade covers. Dennis from Delaware
I live in hickory and was really impressed with the axe performance and I was thinking how cool to buy something local, until you mentioned the price. I can buy a lot of axes for that price, bulk made of course. Nice review, wish I could afford one
Great vid as always luke. My suggestion for an axe that is all that, roughly the same weight with good quality is one of my favorites. The husqvarna carpenters axe. Can be had for around $60.00.
Nice looking Hand Axe. Personally though I prefer a Camp Axe. A little larger but a lot more impact when you swing it. (Then again I carry a Saw for cutting and only use my Axe for Splitting.) (I do happen to have and carry a Tomahawk on occasion but again that's used for splitting more than chopping.)
Looks like a nice Axe, that being said for the cost I would probably get a Gransfors Bruks . But this really a nice looking axe if you want something more modern looking . Thx for sharing
If you get a chance try the Council Tool 24 inch 2.25 lb boy axe. $45. American made with American materials. Been using boy axes for over 50 years and to me they really hit the sweet spot for size and weight.
Try the Estwing 14” sportsman’s axe. The edge can use a bit of touch-up, but very tapered head chops and splits well. $35 from Amazon or local hardware store, and made in USA.
Luke I have been drawn towards a Estwing Sportsman's Axe. I have been told that they are not very good because they vibrate when chopping and splitting wood. Could you test one out?
Looks like the sheath is now $19, the axe and sheath combined are currently under $200. However they do include pages of a mission statement about how much they care about stuff at no additional charge. Really touching stuff that I don't consider when deciding if their product is any good.

Amazing axe! Best of the best! No doubt ! Mine came with protective sheath. I am struggling for find a belt loop to hold it with the leather sleeve on. I am based in the UK. Any suggestions?
Luke thanks for asking the axe is a beautiful one but far to expensive for a working man could you review equipment that you might find from say Target or LOWES or any place an average guy might shop? I know you said Amazon but some of us are old and have not connected with E-commerce thanks a lot
Hey buddy. Thanks fora great review, as always keeping it honest! Can you put this axe against a well known I quality brand , but less than half the price; the Grandfors Bruks Small forest Axe. And see how it compare. Thanks
I actually looked those axe up while the video was playing and was shocked at the price. Awesome looking and obviously a super quality product but way out of my price range. I definitely prefer the walnut handle though...
Luke, I am curious about the Council Tool Hudson Bay velvicut model not exactly cheap but less expensive rhan the one you are curently testing. Not sure how these stack up to a Gransfors Bruks but I have never tried one of those either. I usually take to the woods with a folding saw a large knife and and a cheapo estwing for processing firewood. But i would like to purchase an axe that has more weight distributed in the head than throughout the handle. That one you tested looks awesome, but the pricepoint is a little higher than I would give for an axe, especially when they want another 70 for a mask. Great initial review though.
Field test it by Susie... there is a good one. It seems rather hefty and overdone. Go to a regular weekend warrior type store and see what may be available for the average Joe. More in keeping with the fun trippper and not a prepper. Perhaps even a hybrid?
$180 right now on their site. It looks real pretty. I use a hatchet that cost £15, i don't know if the Hoox one would be over 10 times better. If that makes sense..
Hey Luke! How about doing a review of the Cold Steel Trail Boss Axe? $35.84 on Amazon for a 27" multi purpose axe. I went to Lowe's and got a 3# axe with wood handle for less than $30. I have used and abused that axe for years. Handle is holding up well and the only downside is that it doesn't come with a sheath. Just a thought.
Nice axe but as you said there are axe's out there that do the job just as well for less, the fact the collar turns while in use is a bummer, guess wetting and shrinking could fix that, we'll see how it holds up.
Not a hand ax but have you tried out the fiskars x7 hatchet? I like it. Don't think I've ever used a hand ax. Suggestions that aren't this pricey? Lol. You're correct about the mask, especially for the price point. Beautiful hand ax tho. Take Care and Be Aware
It certainly looks nice. But the lack of a swell at the base of the haft..would concern me. Also seems a bit pricey for that steel and no mask. Would love to see something on one of the Husqvarna hatchets or small axes.
Looking forward to a long term review. I would have liked to have seen both the collar and sheath to be made in NC or at least in the US. If both the sheath and collar were included I don’t think the price is that far out of line for a premium product, let’s see how it holds up over time and real world use.
I see all these higher dollar hatchets , hand axes , full size axes .. how about a Collins hunters axe. About 20 bucks .. I’d like to know the comparisons to the hardware store axe .. after it’s properly sharpened of course to the out of the box High end axes
Have a great week everyone; be safe out there!
I'm heading out for a 3 day trip which means that another adventure is coming up soon.

Thanks
I wonder how it compares to my Wetterlings Bushman (At half the price.)
I'd like to see what you could do with a Fiskers.
There's a camp axe by Estwing E24A that I've heard good things about. You can get them at Lowes.
Oh yeah and an upholstry tack in the lacing area will take cara of that guard floating around.
I actually looked those axe up while the video was playing and was shocked at the price. Awesome looking and obviously a super quality product but way out of my price range. I definitely prefer the walnut handle though...
Would you consider checking out the Schrade SCAXE10? It is a hatchet, not a hand axe. It is very cheap though and seems to be good for the price.
What hand axe in the $50-&100 range would you recommend?
In addition to handle length, head weight also figures into the hatchet vs hand axe definition.
Impressive whackin Luke" : )
I do like the Woox to.
I would love to see you do a review on the council tools flying fox sports utility axe and a side by side comparison, Thanks!
Review the Marbles camp or hunters axes. Best budget bushcraft axes, love mine.
Sweet looking axe that be nice for splitting wood up nicely but could it make a hole in a long for survival purposes.
I personally like Fiskars Axes and I think they are a great option especially Ina budget
Hey Luke cool but expensive hope y'all are well much love your way be safe have a wonderful coming in week
Not a bad little hand axe
funny I just heard about woox in another video regarding their rifle chassis, they sure get around.
Great review. But for the price I would get one. How would crkt tomahawk perform?
Good Review for the money. Please review the Estwing 26" campers axe.
Gransfors bruks is where it's at!
Just wondering how hogue exf01 you had is doing, are we going to get an update on that soon?
It certainly looks nice. But the lack of a swell at the base of the haft..would concern me. Also seems a bit pricey for that steel and no mask. Would love to see something on one of the Husqvarna hatchets or small axes.
Looking forward to a long term review. I would have liked to have seen both the collar and sheath to be made in NC or at least in the US. If both the sheath and collar were included I don’t think the price is that far out of line for a premium product, let’s see how it holds up over time and real world use.
On sale ATM and comes with a minimal but functional blade sheath.
Do a review on the 20 in Husqvarna Carpenters axe
Great review as always. Nice hand axe but as stated, very pricey. Would love to see a review of the Fiskars X7...over 2400 reviews on Amazon....
I see all these higher dollar hatchets , hand axes , full size axes .. how about a Collins hunters axe. About 20 bucks .. I’d like to know the comparisons to the hardware store axe .. after it’s properly sharpened of course to the out of the box High end axes
...you will have to test it on a snake...lol..great vid..you could test the old standby ,the Fiskar's ax..
I haven't found a better value than the fiskar brand axes. They are extremely sharp and hold up to any abuse you throw at them.
I’ve got a Fiskars, it’s a brilliant little axe, ok it’s got a plastic sheath, but it’s better than nothing..
How would you compare it to the "wetterlings" you have?
