  • Starting carving usually begins with a simple project, and this flower will get you started. Once you have done this, you can create a wide range of other decorative carvings and add them to your woodworking projects, pieces like box lids and picture frames. Enjoy!

thank you for all your work Paul. I wouldn't be an 1/8 of the woodworker I am today without your guidance.

See Paul only you could take something that others would make a lecture about and explain it in simple terms that can be extrapolated upon. Ty for continuing to teach us.

I'm just starting to collect gouges so I can learn woodcarving. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. Dai "lovespoon" Thomas has been a huge help! He and his dad make Welsh Love Spoons, they are in Wales...I'm in the U.S. Thanks for showing me this! I didn't think about using a gouge to actually do chip carving. At age 70, I want to learn something new. I'm a retired ironworker. Wood is a different animal so to speak. I've been designing whirligigs and a few other little wood projects as a new hobby. Keeps the mind active lol! Woodcarving will give me something to do in the winter here in Northern New York in a spare room. I close my little shop in the winter. I use the scroll saw a lot in the summer for most projects. I always enjoy watching your shows! Great tip! Take care!

Have always liked chip carving, you see it alot on antique bed headboards and antique dry sinks, commodes, etc. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for giving us all the creative license to add chip carving straight from the garden into our next custom project.

This video has been appearing in my feed lately but I've avoided it. I knew Paul would make it accessible for the everyday person, but I avoided it because I knew it would be doable, so I'm excited about trying it at some point. But the fact is I'm still steeped in my table saw restoration so that's getting in the way of me actually doing woodworking. Sigh... soon.

Just did this the hard way with a knife in an old beech compass saw handle…needless to say, this method would have saved me quite a bit of time and sore thumbs!

You make it look so easy! You would be a great wood carver! Making life size wood statues of people or mantle figurines would be a fun side hobby!

You can see this is how the old tradesmen used to do it in the old manner houses.

I was trying to carve some names into wooden toyboxes for children, and I carved around the area of each letter to provide for relief. I don't think it's called chip carving, but I don't know what it is called.
Anyway, another technique to add to my tools!
