2:51 - Four new streamlined five-car trains were built. Can anyone explain why Disneyland built only THREE new Mark VII trains which began service in 2008?
From what I've heard, the monorail needed a sacrificial lamb. Mark V Orange was the train used for reverse engineering and had been seen in pieces, but Mark V Purple was used for parts to complete Mark VII Orange. What happened to her remains is unknown. I don't know which Mark V finally became which Mark VII. The conversion happened in Canada and the trains had been spotted on flatbed trucks. It had been a long time since Disneyland had operated 3 trains at once since the monorails were in shuttle mode during the resort expansion. Only having 2 stations, 3 train operation might not be any more efficient than 2 trains.
koutesu I do not believe that is correct. Purple was not taken out of commission until the new Blue and Red were there and Orange came just a couple of weeks later. My understanding is that Purple is being stored somewhere in case they wish to make a forth one at some later point. Purple was the first Mark V ever made. I rode it when Mark III Red and Blue were still in operation. I wish Disney would preserve Mark V Purple but knowing them it will sit around for 10-20 years and then be destroyed:(
No, I remember going there as child and seeing the old yellow, red and blue (never saw the green one). The next time I went there was the new purple, old red and old blue. I got my father to ask how many monorails there were and they told him, just 3. Yellow and green had gone, one of them was turned into purple and I assume the other one was turned into which ever color came next.
They sent orange to be reversed engineered but I am very confident the first one (red) was built off of it. The others too, were built off the old ones. If they weren't there would have been no reason to send the other old ones to the manufacturing site which there are Internet photos documenting. The only one not sent was purple, at least I never saw any evidence of.
Beautiful Monorail pics. Especially like the ones in the barn. You don't see that often, like the rail switch.
Awesome Video

That is strange, I believe that orange was the newest one and didn't arrive for quite a while after the others.
Though the subject matter is very interesting, the picture quality of this presentation does not do it justice and ought to be better.
These were shot in 1985. We did not have hi-def yet.
