  • 161. Installing my 12v Batteries to CTEK Smartpass 120S and D250SE is the main subject of today's lockdown van conversion vlog. I discovered the CTEK system as an alternative to my previous split charge relay systems that never seemed to work for long before I needed a new leisure battery. When I invested in the CTEK system I had not heard of the Renogy or Victron systems that I have now seen installed in lots of vans, they look good but I've spent far too much to change systems and install another brand.

With regard to the baton, my preference was to go onto the rib and then cover with vapour barrier and silver tape. Given mines high enough to stand and im not tall i lost 25mm but gives a good mounting point and point of reference for anything else that needs to be mounted after cladding. Never get condensation as there is a barrier between the baton and the cladding. Additionally, its less wood...less weight.

Ok that's helpful, so I'll make a start getting the batons in place, I'll use the side of rib, finish insulation and then vapour barrier and foil tape seams. Then cladding can be done.

@@OntheRoadLiving any reason in particular you going on the side? Seems like more wood and additional work?

Maybe I'm not understanding what yours is like as I will use use the same amount of wood either way, I bought a pack of eight 1.8mm batons a couple months ago and figure I'll use six or seven of them slightly cut down. I don't want to lose height, plus would need to buy more recycled bottle type insulation to fill a deeper gap between cladding and roof. Hopefully I'll get a fair bit done for tomorrow's video.

@@OntheRoadLiving so I put one baton on directly on the underside, self tapper into rib...keeping the natural curve if drilled in firmly and then vapour barrier and tape over. Looking at how your suggesting you'd be placing batons on either side hence the additional wood, no right or wrong just curious.

That’s clear and as I thought you meant, I’m only putting them on one side, as cables on the other of three of the four cross beams, there’s a lip that will seat the baton perfectly, just happens to be same depth as the batons I have. I will use a few self tappers and an adhesive sealant on those batons

I would of worked out the charging system eventually ( with lots of Google's) but it would of taken me a week. Looks like a really good system. All the best Chris. 👍

How is the ctek system performing?

Hi, sorry for late reply, ctek working great, although my power needs are quite low, it doesn’t take much driving or sun each day to completely top up my 240Ah of batteries. Was fairly simple to set up. My biggest problem is not ctek but the nasa bm2 battery monitor isn’t great even with shunt. I tend to see more people with Victron systems but I’m really happy with the ctek

It’s not a “how to” video, if you want that then contact ctek. If you read description it says how I install my ctek in this vlog. So it’s my vlog and I don’t need advice from you at what I do thanks!
