      Kierrraaaaaa so true he used the shoot and irrelevant viral trends to cover up what's actually happening, in the background chaos and people jumping off the second floor and car windows. And the focus the whole time is the dancing.

      Ppl have the simplest, obvious takes on that new Gambino song #ThisIsAmerica , saying its about police violence/white supremacy. It opens with a young black man shooting an old black man cuz his song was too upbeat& then breaking into your standard ambition rap.

      Martin the shootings didn't cover up anything. It doesn't make sense that a shooting would be less important than whats happening in the background. either way, during the shooting scene there was nothing in the back. I think the video has a lot to do with the aftermath of those shootings, because that's when the people come in. kids dancing in the chaos could mean how kids today don't care much about whats going on and they just keep doing there thing even though real problems are happening around them

    Childish Gambino's "This Is America"...he plays a Jim Crow caricature that shows plenty of symbolism through subtle nuances and direct distractions by entertaining through dance and trap lyricism. Trendy dancing and the glorification of materialism, while chaos, violence and death takes place around him and in our direct viewing. Desensitized as if the violence is non-existent or just a normal aspect of our daily lives.
    The last part...is mirroring how black ancestors attempted to escape chaos and death from former slave masters. Running through the darkness, with no real place to run to.

      I disagree with the last part. You can see a black woman running on the left. Him and America is running away from something big and chaotic for allowing ourselves to be distracted. Also when he pulled up to shoot the kids he din't have a gun it was taken away, someone else came for the kids for them to run away.

      I looked it up! You was right! I think him killing the man in the beginning is how black stereotypes have distracted or killed our real image. The black man on the guitar in the beginning is happy, minding his own business, playing simple but melodic guitar music. He shots the man in the beginning but he shows up at the end but with the sack still on his head. People are still blinded by the stereotype, what he is representing with the music, dances, etc. GIRL! My mind is blown!

    • @joshuadimayuga4400
      @joshuadimayuga4400 6 років тому +16

      Saul Gland I see where you're coming from but he's trying to emphasize a lot on America in particular. Trying to express how black culture is so influential yet American society still discriminates against them. He's trying to show with all the ad-libs of other black artists like the Migos or 21 Savage that he is the representation of all black culture that is in the spotlight in the generation whilst we ignore all of the chaos and important issues (the background). He's trying to display the struggle of being both a black artist in the rap game and a black man in American society. He also made several references to shootings that have occurred which may also be his way of displaying America's lack of gun control and reform. This video was very well created and I honestly agree with his message. It's pretty disappointing that as a society that is trying to be progressive and better than the past, we're still treating other races, which is a social construct not a natural categorization/label, as inferior to another race. History is still repeating itself sadly despite the changes and progress made.

      Fire Panda i feel like it was about how we pay attention to whats popular (the dancing shit) then something bad happens (shootings or whatever) and we stop for a second but soon everyone forgets and goes back yo paying attention to whats popular again (back to dancing). So the shootings werent a distraction.

    • @UNDTHEBRAND

      .i wouldn't say he's underrated & I believes he gets the acknowledgement he deserves. He just don't drop as much music as he use to and people tend to forget about him until he drops gems like this because our attention span is extremely short. He's a master at his craft and creates off pure emotions which is why this is a masterpiece. Just my personal opinion

    These 3 dudes missed the whole concept of what the artist is saying in the video, they themselves are actually doing what the truth of the video is saying, they bobbing they head and smiling, and digging on the dance moves of the artist, the entertainment, focused on all the wrong things, while there is kaos, rasism, police murdering, diminishing values, and the list goes on, everybody making these videos don't know what they talking about, but yall don't care about that right, because as yall say, they look good in their black right, ooops, there it is again, wake up people.

    • @pixelfantasizer
      @pixelfantasizer 6 років тому +6

      It's ok. Good art never had ONE interpretation/meaning. They might have missed things, but they picked other things up based on their own personal history and what they feel - and CG chose to make it a music vid for a reason: we can watch it as many times and deconstruct it all we want. When they watch it a second time and notice they were distracted, that feeling of epiphany and realization will be felt even stronger, making the message even more powerful.

    I think it has to deal with distractions like how the world is going to utter shit and it takes something tragic to happen for people to pay attention to something that’s not mainstream and trendy. I think Donald Glover is symbolizing a few different moments of us as a country being in outrage and shocked about something then being distracted by something less stressful like his dance moves meanwhile shit still is happening behind us that we pay no attention too until it’s too late. I think he is teaching a lesson on awareness of the world.

    No hate, yall are dope but he isn't representing a certain culture. He's representing what's poppin and how we all stay distracted. I notice a lot of people a little after the first man killed get back to grooving, especially when the choir comes up but after the choir it really hits... Yet a lot of people still go back to vibing with the song towards the end. We're all the people he's representing when we don't take control of our emotions. He's showing us how easily we can become distracted by things and how the average person forgets about such tragic events within a short time span . It's basically a wake up call.

      1 in the stink, you are 100%. Even as I watched- trying to understand his lyrics and his angle- I fell for the distraction. Totally. The art of it all was so engaging I overlooked the horrible scenes put in front of me, all but ignored them. All I wanted was the entertainment. His dance, his perfect flow, that damn infectious beat. I have watched this at least 30 times now. I was missing the point because I was so eager to be entertained. Now I see it. I love this video because it is amazingly well done, but it also makes me a little sick. I have a feeling that it should make us feel this way.

    I wonder if you noticed at the end it the lyrics go "get your money, black man. get your money, black man. GET DOWN" To me how I interpret that is like mainstream America expects excellence from Black people, yet they're still treated like thugs and gunned down just for being black hence the "Get Down" part.
    Like i think of that black man in NY who used to work for the Obama administration that was just moving into his apartment yet someone called the cops on him for literally doing nothing.

In the background however, all the killings in churches, people's homes, kids, etc, are going on as we speak, but we're always distracted by what's popping out in front of us. Very Strong Video. Listening to what you guys were saying about Jadan and Childish. Childish has been this way for awhileeeee but he’s really be bringing it out for the past few years. One of his older songs, which a lot of people are familiar with, “cut a white girl with the same black gloves on” says a lot about the message he’s been trying to convey.
    I like that he is a very intelligent person trying to kind of dumb stuff down for the general public while being creative.
    Love you guys videos😺

  • @SingerDancer212
    @SingerDancer212 6 років тому +1

    This was such artistry. Telling actual problems in the world, and if you just watched the dancing, you would have missed everything important. He was a portraying Jim Crow, the pose when he shot someone, and the way he moved. The video and song had many layers, Gun Violence, Hate Crime, Suicide/Mental Illness, (when the guy jumped to his death), He also touched on some other references, with the man in Black on the Horse, basically representing Death, and how chaos follows it.
    You see how every time he shoots someone, the gun is handled carefully? But the people are dragged away, and immediately after, he does some big dance to draw you back in. Then you have people recording it, but not really feeling the weight of the situation, because we are so used to it. We have become blinded and distracted from the important stuff behind the scenes. When he had a gun, no one ran, but when he didn't and only made the image with his hands, everyone ran away. Then after he smoked, he got chased. IDK, Just my thought on the video.

  • @Mouko
    @Mouko 6 років тому +3

    Nobody has mentioned that every time he shot someone, everyone acted like it was normal and went back to business. That one time he was unarmed and made the gesture to hold a gun at someone, everyone ran, the music stopped, etc

      I think he went to pull a gun, one wasn't at the ready, and the music stopping represents his emotional state. The kids run, but this time, no one dies. The potential shooter just takes a pause, lights a blunt and chills. Maybe a statement on gun control in america. If the gun isn't available, no one gets shot. In the first two shootings, he was alone when the gun was pulled (other than the victims) so who is there to run away?
      The other thing is that when the black man shot the black man, they clean it up and hid it away, and no one cares. After the church shooting, the mob comes running to make their noise and make a big temporary deal out of it before they move onto something else, and the cops actually show up.

    DUALISM. DUALITY IN OUR NATURE, OUR ATTENTION, OUR ENVIRONMENT AND WE KNOW ENTERTAINMENT BUT WE DON'T KNOW PLEASURE. The symbolism with the pale white horse riding in the background reminds me of the most craziest book The Pale White Horse. So much can be unpacked by this video. Masterpiece nonetheless.

    Did y'all notice okay when he was dancing around the kids and all of a sudden everything went Pause and quiet and he had his arm up and his finger extended like it was a gun and he basically killed off and lost his mind, or whatever and nobody came nobody tried to stop him as soon as he lit a blunt and went out and start dancing on the car the white people started chasing him but did not chase him when he killed off the black kids but chase him when he lit a blunt crazy. The priorities what was more important the kids are the blunt. Oh yeah and did you all see SZA sitting on the car at the end like a beautiful black Queen basically you know she was saying that she may quit music because she was basically not being noticed probably for colorism maybe. I wish we could all just love each other but at the end of it all we will have to answer to GOD. I really wish we did not see color as of race because people don't realize that separation causes division and when there is division there's debate and when there's debate there is questions and when there is questions there is fear and where there is fear causes intimidation and when there is intimidation there is a fight and when you have to fight there comes War but if we all work together as one we would be one. Could you just imagine if the whole entire world work together as one and just love each other how powerful would that be.

    Think yall missed what the video was actually about. The dancing is a distraction. It distracts you from whats really going on such as the things going on in the background or the running into the dark like slaves did in the underground rail road not really knowing where they are running but running to freedom. You got the white horse in the background the church shooting etc. You should go back and watch it. Video is actually really symbolic.

    This video showcases so many different issues. I have watched it a few times I'm still seeing new things. All of the violent problems are prominent in this one video. While all these other rap artist are promoting drugs, violence and luxury, Gambino and Kendrick Lamar are telling the truth about the power of the influence in the music industry during these dark times in America. So much respect for this.

    110% agree he's talking about all the stuff going on in America right now, hence the name of the song and the lyrics. I think this music video is hard for a lot of people to watch, but what I say to them is - if it's hard for you to watch, then imagine what it's like for people who live it? You know? So i think it's a positive thing to have a really realistic video/song like this out now and gaining so much traction.

I can actually say his mind in creative mode is letting us know how we think not just black people but just americans in general. I showed this to my grandmother and she cried but she said this is all true she grew up during those times and it was hard and in her words shyt still have not changed...

    It's less about race, and more about what we listen to. Music talking about violence and killing...masked with dances. We ask everyone to take us seriously as a race, but we don't take us seriously. Then, we complain about cultural appropriation, but get someone like Lil Pump record deals. Even after he insults lyricists like J. Cole...calling it "lyrical shit." 😑

Therefore...THEY ARE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE MY INTERPRETATIONS. You are welcome to your own point of view. I don't believe UND put a minimum on the comments beneath their videos. • @msveeip
      @msveeip 6 років тому +1

      Jerry Williams Then my question would be...how do you interpret the lyrics as they relate to the song, if it is just about race. I'm not saying you are wrong, but I would like to know.

    • @BlahBuggity
      @BlahBuggity 6 років тому +1

      msveeip I think there is definitely a portion of this that has to do with race strictly because of his (Donald Glover) portrayal of Jim Crow. Jim crow is most commonly associated with a set of laws or ideals governing segregation but stem from an act that used to be put on to mimic and mock more traditional African song and dance. I myself cannot presume all of the intentions of the song and music video but my guess would be that the death of traditional African culture in America is a theme here. I hope that I helped in some way. I would love to hear Donald Glover speak more about his personal connection to his creation but I doubt he will simply for the sake of art and interpretation.
