- How to make stools from shock absorbers and coil springs. This video shows how to make a pair of stools from shock absorbers and coils springs.
⚠️ Warning, these coil springs were not under compression!!! If you are attempting these and are not sure what you are doing make sure the springs are clamped as they maybe under compression and could cause serious injury when opening them. Also before welding it to the base drill a small hole in the shock to release the gas inside. Although it should be inert gas it is wise to do so to stop the gas pressure building up from the heat of the welding.⚠️
The shocks and spring came from the back of an old VW Polo which you may have seen before in this video : • Seat belt buckle KEY H...
The 50 mm x 25 mm box, flat steel and plastic inserts were all purchased from a hardware store and cost 25 Euro. The mdf for the seat was made from scraps I had and was glued together with gorilla wood glue.

It just so happens that I have two unused springs in my garage at the moment. Looks like a good time to get my powerarc welder out and make a couple of nice stools. Thanks for the idea and the video.
Congratulations! 101% professional in all aspects! Thank u 4 sharing with us
Good to see you're taking well intentioned advice from those who know about the make up of shocks. 👍
Thanks James, good advice is always welcomed.
So unique! Thanks for sharing!
👍
WOW, what a shocking transformation!!! Great job 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Shane.

Nice and simple. Yet extreme in a way? Very nice work! I love it.
New sub. Awesome idea and they’re incredible. Nicely done
Thank you very much Thom! Merry Christmas.
Freaking awesome! I'll never throw struts away again!
These stools came out shockingly well! ;)
Professional DIY!👏👏👏
Real definition of working from home 🏡 nice work 👍
Thanks Aaron!
Really cool project :) those stools look awesome. just subscribed!
Awesome work with simple tools. Bravo.
Pretty cool. I'll have to remember this next spring when I can work outside again.
Thanks Allen.
More than great 👍🏻 this was an AWESOME CREATION CONGRATS and thank you for sharing your ideas with us :) ignore the naysayers ☺️🤫
Hi Ryan, thank you very much.
Perfeito parabens
I can appreciate the work you put into it ..I say it's nice
They look great and will create a lot of discussion for sure. I should make some unique bar stools with my powerarc.
Great job and nice project. Onething though, I wonder if the wife will miss her shock absorbers should I remove them. Lol. Nice job.
Your projects are amazing! I recently subscribed and am really enjoying watching everything so far. These stools look amazing!
Thank you very much Josh! Hopefully lots more videos to come.
They look superb,,,,,
That's one gorgeous piece of True Art. A + Rating on this video
Thank you very much !
Those are awesome Eamon. The orange really pops out. I was hoping for an action shot of you bouncing around, oh well:)
Ha thanks man. The internet does not need a video of my ass bouncing on a stool! :-)
Eamon Walsh DIY Well, maybe not UA-cam. haha.
I agree i was hoping tp see it in use .great job they look amazing
Very cool! Baffled at the 1.7k thumbs down. Not sure what’s not to like. A winner in my book. By the way I am an ASE certified Automotive Service Master Technician. Thumbs up on your build.
They should have done a sitting test, does it roll side to side or not?
Very clever use of old parts!
Thanks Danny.
Ottima idea ed ottimo lavoro!!!! BRAVO!👏👏👏
Wow it's an amazing way to recycle bad shock absorber into attractive & useful sits ...😉😉😉
I love the design of these stools. I believe it is time to source some springs and make a few of these with the everlast for the bar.
Nice job! I would like to see them in action.
Thanks ivaneff! If I get a chance I will post up a shot of them in action on my Facebook page under the stool video. It may be the weekend before i get to do it.
Thanks again.
Stools I can make with my powerarc welder and some old shocks. Who would have thought?
What a wonderful thought process, amazing way to reuse, hats off all the way from India.
Thank you Moses.
Excellent work 👍 👍🏼
Amazing vid! I have no clue who makes that jigsaw at 5:55. I can't figure it out because of the tape....
Matt's Shop Black n decker
nice job, if you put an airbag on one and someone is getting on your nerves, well you know.
Ha, now thats an idea!
uKNOWuLIKE that u think just like me 😁😁😂
too much James Bond
Thank you for showing your great idea, your creativity, your intelligence, this is the first time I have seen your video and I really liked it. May God bless you and have good health.
Great video and amazing idea!
Cant believe you didn't show us them in use at the end !! was totally waiting for it ahah
Great idea, but for the next time, it so much better if you prove it.. cuz we need to see how's work..
Nice job! Creative design and use of materials. I would have liked to see somebody sitting on them to see the spring in action. If I can offer a suggestion - no need to film every step. Film one part of a repetitive step and then in the next shot show them all done (or something like that). It keeps the interest of the viewer better. I like the music, too. Good choice. Great film quality, and the "beauty shots" at the end were nice, too. Well done.
Thank you and thanks for all the suggestions and taking the time to comment. The feedback is much appreciated.
nie but it would be completed if sat on them too
great idea & video, gunna make one real soon. thank you...
Thank you Eric.
Awesome, Sustainable Engineering.
But what about the "running" test? How much practical work?
I turned the speed up to Double Time and didn't miss anything
turned out Great - bet your place looks pretty cool
Thanks again Gary.
Very stylish. A great job.
Thanks Stuart!
Ya, I wouldn’t sit on it either. 1/4 in plate, sturdy base.. triple stacked mdf. And you hold the whole thing together by a small bit of threaded rod? Seems as though it would either be hard to sit on, or bend soon.
Mike Iuzzolino It's a strut from a car. The shaft is supported inside the tube. It'll handle a person.
William Green in a car it will only ever receive vertical force, which it’s designed for. If someone sits on the edge of this, it will apply horizontal force. Something it was never meant to absorb.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating. I want to like these, but it just seems incomplete
I am a mechanic, so allow me to predict the future for you here; The only thing that is holding the seat pads perpendicular to the ground, is the shaft of the shock absorbers. And it's a skinny shaft, as far as the options out there. When somebody sits down, they will be moving around on the chair, and their 60+ KG weight will shift *SIDEWAYS*. The springs won't stop that from happening. You have nothing in the design that can deal with the sideways forces, other than the shafts from the shock absorbers. And those shafts were never designed to take sideways forces, only up and down. In a car suspension, a shock would never experience sideways forces.
So what will happen here is that the chairs will be wobbly, and the shock seals will start leaking pretty quickly, and you'll get oil all over your shocks. Worst case, the shock shafts will actually bend.
Don't get me wrong. They *LOOK* nice, but you forgot to consider physics.
Thank you for all the info, Its much appreciated. I have learned a lot about shocks in the last few weeks.
I'm not a mechanic, but I use logic too!
It is impossible for these stools to be useful for the same reason you mention. It has no support to keep it. The springs are going to contract but the shock absorber will not work in the way it is expected, they can not maintain perpendicularity, making whoever feels, ends up on the floor :(
It's a very attractive design, but it stays there, in a nice design ...
I'm sorry Eamon Walsh, but that's how I think it is
You could take a MacPherson Strut. It should handle the forces ways better :)
Eamon Walsh DIY I will subscribe just because of your comment.
Also a mechanic here. These will stand up just fine for a 200 lb person. These things are built to take a hell of a lot of weight. Also don't see them compressing a whole lot, unless they're very lightweight springs. I made a set of stools out of minivan struts, It hardly moves when I sit on them. Mind you I'm not a big guy.
Coolest thing I've seen in 2018
Why not sit to show us how this chair work?
Carlos Henrique Noronha de Aguiar super
Carlos Henrique Noronha de Aguiar yes..i want too
I guess that will be solid it wont work i think they were car suspension . To work i think you need to be half ton heavy 😄
@@cosmic2914 If you think that the shock is used as hell... when you sit, it'll be easy to compress the shock and the spring
It would have been great if you may also demonstrate how the damn rod in the middle will provide any cushioning when one sits on it. .... as a design it's nice, practicality . i dont think so !
You dumb ass, you do understand how a coilover shock strut assembly works right?? Lmao how do people make comments when they dont know wtf they are talking about...oh yea fuckin TROLLS!!!!!! Great idea and great build man!!! 🤙
good job, thanks for the idea... greetings from the island of Bangka
Thank you very much. 😊
Wow amazing..
Good idea
i dont think we could sit on that stool nicely and comfort.. have you ever considered about sideways force? it gonna be a wobbly stool
I like the video, idea, and the advice in the description.....
Cheers!! :D
Thank you!
Props for the stick welding, glad to see others who still like em even with super cheap crappy mig welders these days
Thank you James.
11 minutes and we never get to see u sitting on one of them!? Wtf
But, it's a great idea.
These are very.somple method, for me very useful and l can follow the same,Thank you
Simply amazing
Sold for 350...you can make money bro..
Why not demo the stools?
This is a really cool project, and excellent work on this! Great craftsmanship! I might try this out soon!
Thank you very much.
Congrulations! Good job
I guarantee someone will watch this video and get killed taking a strut apart.
MrCoffeekelly absolutely right
Darwin.
Jay Crowder douchebag ^^^^^
What form will that guarantee take?
Great Job!
Very nice idea!!!! 👏👏I have two pieces of these buffers thrown in the corner of my hobby workshop, and I wondered how I could make them to use them in a seat or something, and your video inspired me. Thank you!
awesome idea and work... wish I had the welding skills to make one.
This was awesome, bravo!
Thank you Greatman!!
Very cool! I've never seen anything like it!
Thanks Bruce!
It looks like a lot of good looks like it looks great

Hvala ti Stevanu.
Nice work love it..
It's a great and brilliant technical work with your cleverness and more expect to see you again your creativity
Thank you very much.
I've got a couple of springs in the garage. I should take the everlast out and weld up some stools. They would be great conversation pieces.
Your job is good and nice . super work . l really this made
