The ball that stuck in the wall is a ground rule double. You’ll see this a lot when the Cubs are playing at home, when a ball hit to the outfield gets lost in the ivy. The outfielder has to hold his arms up though to signify a timeout. If they make an attempt to go for the ball, play continues.
It sometimes depends on the ump, the player can hold his hands up and signal for "unplayable ball" but they may or may not honor it, depending on where the ball is lodged. That one was pretty easily retrievable, so there's a chance that the umpires could let it play on and whatever the results of the play were stands. But generally they do honor the unplayable request. Especially when lost in the ivy.
Actually, it is a book rule double--meaning that it is a double by rule in any stadium. A ground rule double is specific to the stadium (grounds). They tend to overlap alot though.
How is the Randy Johnson pitch hitting the bird not part of that? That is by far the most crazy one in a million thing to ever happen in baseball in my opinion.
What's crazy is it happened again earlier this year and it was also a diamondback. Lol It wasn't in the same way or nearly as dramatic as when Randy did it though.
The funniest part about the eagle is it landed on James “The Big Maple” Paxton, the only Canadian guy on the field that day. Sniffed it out in his blood 😂
There is also the one where a batter hits five or so foul balls in a row into the same corner of the 3rd baseline dugout. The players moved further down the bench each time.
Great reaction guys. There’s a great video called, “ MLB, Best Mic’d up fights”. I think it gives more context to McClendon taking first base. Actually, the video with McClendon is called “MLB Best Manager Ejections”, but both videos are worth a look for a good laugh.
Great video. The pizza throwing is one of my favorite things to watch. I recommend finding the full video. Judge’s catch ruined this past season for the Yankees because he got hurt. Watched the Renfroe no look catch live this past season and it was amazing.
Regarding the ball getting stuck in the glove, pitchers wear large gloves to conceal the ball. They also field closer to the batter than any other fielder. When the pitcher uses a glove for awhile, it gets old and floppy, and a hard hit ball will sometimes get lodged between the fingers of the glove. However, an example of a pitcher using sticky stuff can be seen in the intro, when the ball literally glued itself to Yadier Molina’s catcher gear.
it wasn't sticky stuff there, that just happens with that older style of catcher mask, which is why nobody uses it anymore. And I say that as a Cubs fan.
About the Mantis... in the US, we had an urban myth growing up as kids that if you hurt mantis you'd be fined $50, at least where I grew up. The general idea was just leave a mantis to do what it wants to do, and that they never hurt humans so you should just leave them to their own business. We also learn that if they need to fly away, they'll just fly away because, well, they can do that if they want. Mantids are good for gardens, generally, and the ecosystem, so long as they're native species.
The outfielder only knocking over the top can is such a huge flex. If he didn't mutter "foolish mortals" under his breath afterwards I'll be very surprised.
The strangest way to lose a game that I know of came on July 12, 1979 - Disco Demolition Night. The White Sox had to forfeit Game 2 of a double header after the field was damaged when fans rioted and burned disco records. Definitely worth a look!
7:35 - if the ball gets stuck somewhere inaccessible, it is a ground rule double (same as if it bounced over the fence). Getting stuck in the ivy at Wrigley is the most common way for that to happen, but there have been balls hit through a hole in the bottom of the fence, or balls that bounced through an open door in the fence, or balls that get stuck in the roof at the Rays' ballpark (this famously happened at least once at the Twins' old park as well - a ball was hit through a hole in the roof and landed outside on the roof). Also, you cannot be out on a catch if the ball hits the fence, even if it never hits the ground.
The clip of manager Lloyd McClendon taking a base with him after being ejected reminded me of the most entertaining manager ejection I've ever seen: Phillip Wellman of the Double-A Mississippi Braves. Do a search and you'll find it. It's probably too short for a reaction.
Each park has its own "ground rules", as many have their own unique features (the ivy at Wrigley, the catwalk in Tampa). So things like the ball stuck in the outfield fence could be ruled as something else if that park's "ground rules" say it's something else.
You guys absolutely need to watch the clip of randy johnson hitting a bird. i dont know why its not on here but thats easily the best 1 in a million moments
I don't know how much people have been asking for this, but I am putting my voice out there that the two of youvneed to watch a career retrospective of Bartolo "Big Sexy" Colon. A truly amazing and unique career. He was the pitcher who did the being the back flip to first base for an out in the video.
Some gloves aren't totally solid across the gap between thumb and forefinger, and have just a few loose straps. Repeated use can make these looser until there's room for the ball to get stuck.
I suspect the reason kicking the ball is legal is it's rare enough anyone would have the skill and need to do that that it hadn't happened before and likely won't happen again anytime soon.
Praying Mantises are fuckin awesome. I'd happily have one hang out with me while playing a sport, but I'd be worried about it getting injured the whole time 😂
If the ball hits the wall it is not a catch. The wall is just an extension of the ground really. So if it hits the wall first and goes into the glove it is a hit.
1:56 sticky stuff is strictly prohibited in baseball all baseballs are brand new stamped and certified for playing the game - if the ball is tampered with it’s clearly noticed. The gloves themselves are leather with straps (each player has different methods for shaping the glove to their hand/to their size/flexibility etc) on occasion if the leather is worn or the straps are too loose the ball can be hit with force and wedge itself into the glove. It’s just stuck on the leather with friction or tangled in the leather straps/ties. The mitt over reaches the fingers by quite a few inches you want to catch the ball above your hand in the mitt, if it’s a little lower closer to the fingers/leather ties it can get stuck if it hits the palm of the hand it will hurt and can pop out of the glove.
Naturally half of these are Mets clips. And there are many many more Mets clips they didn't include (Frenchys unassisted triple play to lose a game, more Guilorme stuff, Bartolo's first HR).
When the ball gets stuck in the glove, it gets caught in the webbing between the thumb and index finger. The leather in that area is tied more loosely than the rest of the glove. Sometimes an area wears iiself even more loose and the ball gets wedged in that area.
If the ball hits the wall it’s the same as the ground. So the stuck ball is still in play unless it can’t be fielded. So if it was higher up and he couldn’t get it then it would be a double. But that instance would be the same as if it just hit the wall any other way since the fielder could reach it.
It would have been Illegal (formally and actually) for the player to do ANYTHING which might have harmed the eagle. As the National Bird, you cannot mess with them legally in any way. It could mean jail time.
Some baseball gloves contain a webbing with openings or "web style". Others dont. ...When a batted ball gets stuck somewhere, or goes out pf the field of play, the fielder must throw up his hands to signal to the umpires that something odd has happened to the ball. From that point, the umpires will make a decision on where to place the batter and runners.
I thought you guys were aware of what constitutes a catch, I guess 1 full season is not enough then...In Baseball, after the ball makes contact with the bat if the ball makes first contact with anything beside the fielder's body, then no "Flyout" will awarded....So if a ball touches a wall then into the fielders gloves without touching the ground, it will NOT count as an out therefore that ball getting stuck in Centerfield is either ruled live or (most likely) a "Ground-Rule Double"
Often when you see a strange play like a ball getting stuck on the wall it will be ruled a ground rule double. Which the runner will just take second base.
Yea you cant catch a ball off the wall for an out. You just play it like its hit the ground like normal or its a ground rule double when it gets stuck like that.
The wall counts as the ground for catches, but given the ball was stuck there it may have been ruled a double. I guess it depends on whether the umpire interpreted the rule as meaning just kinda lodged there or irretrievably stuck.
The gloves have gaps between the leather depending on the design and balls can get stuck in them if the glove is older adn looser and teh ball is hit harad enough. .
That Aaron Judge video isn't funny to me at all, lol. He hurt his ankle on the play and was out for a couple months. Ruined the Yankees season completely. If the Dodgers had a actual wall out there, they might have snuck in to the playoffs!
Now that I thibk about it, Ive watched most of your baseball videos, and I dont think superstition has come up once. Baseball players are notoriously superstitious. Some guys will use different battig gloves every at bat until they get a hit, theb keep using them until the "magic wears off." Ive never aeen a pitcher step on a chalk line. Its hard to cite examples because everyone is different, but lots of players have weird warmup routines, little ticks tjey do before every pitch, or a ridiculous reason for some hideous facial hair choices. Jist another side of the game you can look into
We’ve learnt a lot about superstitions in baseball from our discord crew, I am not superstitious at all (Nick) but it’s interesting learning about them!

The best part of the pizza throwing incident is Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy’s reaction to it. Best commentating duo ever!
How can there be a video called one in a million MLB moments and it not have the infamous Randy Johnson bird explosion moment??? Inconceivable!!
Because that was a one in a billion
But also a clip with something he's "never seen before", but the commentary clearly states McClendon is taking first base "a la Lou Piniella".
And the play where Jose Canseco had that ball bounce off his head and over the fence for a homerun.
There is also the one where a batter hits five or so foul balls in a row into the same corner of the 3rd baseline dugout. The players moved further down the bench each time.

Victor Robles did know about the praying mantis, he would even signal the count to his hat when he was in the outfield😊
12:20 That is the opening guitar riff to “Kickstart My Heart” by Motley Crue 😂 Not just some random sound effect
You were right the ball stuck in the fence would be a ground rule double.
I agree with those who say the stuck ball was a ground rule double. Fun watching with you guys. Needed that this evening.

Baseball doesn’t exist has a great video on mascots
The lady accused of smuggling in the gun didn't need to be ejected as she was already rushed to the hospital for her gunshot wound.
I love seeing ballplayer's comradery. Reminds me of the rain stoppages at college baseball games when the players put on a show for the fans lol.
