    What the quotes were ...all the thoughts each person shown in each car was thinking... what they were all going through silently.... showing that "Everybody hurts"...This is a rare video that makes the song even more moving

      Yeah, and when the band members are on screen the quotes are the song's lyrics because that's what the band is thinking.

      YES - I hope Daniel noticed - wasn't clear to me if he did - but I feel like that was the best feature of this song -- of course, haunting melody and chorus... but seeing those was... heart-wrenching... and thought-provoking...

    I've have depression all my life. I have peaks and troughs and I have to ride them out because my depression is resistant to medication; it's connected to my aspergers syndrome so I have to live with it. This song has literally saved me so many times. I play it when I feel I feel down. It reminds me I'm not alone in feeling that way. I even got some of the lyrics tattood on my arm, so it's a constant reminder for me. Thank you for reacting to this. Its a very special song of hope for me.

    REM, imho, is definitely worth paying attention to. They have a lyrical, playful, experimental style with poetic sensibilities and consummate musicianship. Shinny Happy People is a sardonic wonderland. Stand, and, It's the End of the World as We Know It, are essential. And, Losing My Religion, is an anthem of Enlightenment. I saw them open for the Talking Heads in '85. Good show.

    • @chac65
      @chac65 3 роки тому

      Shiny Happy People might be their worst song in their entire catalogue. Even Michael Stipe hates it.

    • @willcool713
      @willcool713 3 роки тому +1

      @@chac65 I always took it as walking the line between a totally sincere, upbeat, crazy-positive vibe, and an utterly scathing, sarcastic condemnation of the very same thing. The problem, I think, is that people don't generally recognize the sarcasm and take it as an upbeat anthem. For me it fits both the intention and the hypocrisy in the dogma of positive psychology and sings to a part of me seldom recognized. Art means what it means to people, sometimes -- maybe even often -- having more perspectives than the artist realized or intended. Leonard Cohen's, Hallelujah, is another such song that has taken on symbolism that he never intended. Often that's the mark of great art and artists. I'm not saying, Shinny Happy People, is a masterwork, but for me it evokes a sentiment I don't frequently find expressed, and I revel in it.

    Mixed in with the lyrics of the song were the thoughts of the people in the cars. The song was directed to them, to hold on. Everybody in the cars had problems and felt they weren't being heard. I think this was a brilliant way to do the video. I love this song. Yes, it's sad, but it's also uplifting. Thanks for the great reaction and dissection of the lyrics.

    REM is a great band. Their first four albums are all tremendous. After that, they were more hit and miss for me. This song is an homage to the old Boudleaux Bryant-composed song "Love Hurts," which was originally a country song, but was turned into a rock hit by the band Nazareth. My favorite version of "Love Hurts" is sung by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Cheers, Daniel.

    My absolute favorite group of the 80's and 90's! Michael Stipe's voice is like an extra instrument. I fell in love with them after seeing the video "Losing My Religion". Every song on "Automatic for the People" is actually very good, and worth listening to. Another song I love by them is "Night Swimming", not sure why, it's just great. By the way, the phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." It has nothing really to do with religion. Loved your reaction to "Everybody Hurts". Perfect!

    Great perspective from a younger generation. You are so correct, the song is heart wrenching but ultimately uplifting and so positive. Hold On', it gets better and it's worth fighting for is the primary message. As a 70 year old guy, It is so refreshing to me that you open your soul to the past and it's musical roots. I am a huge fan of your commentary. YES was my life in the past and to this day addicted to Prog. Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Airbag, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson etc. Keep it up, thanks and all the best to you and your family.

    Saddest song I've ever heard is "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, but this song has been known to bring about the ninjas with onions, too. This is one of those songs I'll listen to when I want to bring the hurt and pain to the forefront--to really feel it. For me, if I'm in that kind of emotional pain, I have to just go through it, and the choices are going through a LOT of it in a short period of time or a little bit of it over a much longer time span, so I choose the former and this song helps with that.

    R.E.M. was a tremendous Athens, Georgia band, very creative and badly underrated; Michael Stipe is a flat out genius at writing lyrics. In addition to Everybody Hurts, their best known songs are probably Losing My Religion, What's the Frequency Kenneth, Man on the Moon, and It's The End of the World. Shiny Happy People featured vocals by Kate Pierson, from the other Athens Band, the B-52's. These are all excellent introductory songs. You may get hooked on R.E.M.

    My beautiful friend Meredith chose this for her funeral when we found out that her cancer was terminal. I sat with her while she w as in a coma at home the night before and held her hand and told her how much I loved her and that I’d be back the next day. My husband walked in from work, I was waiting for him so we could go to her, and he had already had the call that she had died. I knew before he told me, just by his face. We got into the car, her family wanted us, and this is the song that was on the radio. I know it was for me, to tell me that she was ok and around me. She died at 34 in 1997, leaving 2 beautiful girls. I still miss her every day of my life, and she sends this song to me at various times. Darling girl. I love you.

    Hi Daniel. I agree that this is not actually a sad song, but a song that aims to give hope to those in a sad situation. Either way its a great piece of work, and one of REM's finest moments. Whilst on the subject of sad songs, maybe try Steven Wilson (ex Porcupine Tree)? His 'Stop Swimming', (dealing with a similar theme as this REM track), and 'Routine' (addressing loss), are thought provoking, sad and incredible pieces of music too..... Take care, Cheers Bob

    You are beautiful. Did you know that?
    "Strange Currencies," "Radio Free Europe," "Fall on Me," "What's the Frequency Kenneth," "Leaving New York," "Drive," "Try Not to Breathe," "Electrolite," "Bang and Blame," are some of my favourites. Just a few! Lol

    Sometimes the local metal/hard rock station plays REM's "The One I Love." The local rock station will play "It's the End of the World" and "Losing My Religion."
    Most of their stuff is too rock and energy draining for me. Someday, maybe he will get back to metal.
    Apparently the people in the video decided to get up and leave their misery behind them. However in reality, they likely would have cursed the situation in which they found themselves symbolized by being stuck in traffic and go to see what is causing their problem only to find a gruesome vehicle pile up with severed body parts and burned bodies where they would have been in another minute. After all, they were only inconvenienced in traffic. They regain perspective.

    February 23, 2017 this song literally saved my life. After taking an enormous amount of pills and feeling a thick fog settle into my brain this song magically came on the radio that I happened to be listening to. This song gave me the will to actually call the suicide hotline and soon after help arrived. Still here today and I consider this not a sad song, but a song of hope.

    A great song, to completely appreciate this song you need to watch the video, the songs helped many people through bad times, and dark nights of the soul, the band received numerous letters from people who had been considering suicide but decided not to after they had listened to the song.

    I think it's a very sad song in that it forces you to draw out your own sadness and look at it, but you can come thru that sadness and feel a little better on the other side, which make the song uplifting

    Others have said great things about this powerful song (brings tears to my eyes every time) in the comments that I don't need to add to, but I thought I'd mention that while Michael Stipe is most known for his role as lead vocalist of REM, he did do one other thing that I'm aware of: "Trout," a duet with Nenah Cherry (a song promoting sex education).

    Love your reactions. this is a great, great band. (in my opinion) The song IS SIMPLE - but often the simplest things are the most beautiful - like a sunset, a grass or a singing bird. I once read that "...REM songs are (often) sad, but there is ALWAYS a light at the end, hope" I hope you do more REM. Greetings from Denmark.
