I'm just getting into candle making and I have the actual making process down to the T. It's the scents. I started with essential oils aromatherapy (BIG MISTAKE) I brought some strong scents which left my sinuses all messed up making my room feel stuffy as I couldn't breathe. I'm about to switch over to regular fragrance with a more softer smell.

Can you explain more why certain scents don’t work well with soy? Is it simply about the volatility of citrus scents, like how they’re just prone to wear out faster? or is it because the oil they’re in will conflict with the soy and cause texture issues?

Thanks for the great video. This is the best one I've seen. I want to try that wax now. I use a eco soy wax and that makes so much sense that adding the fragrance when it's too hot will burn it off. Can you recommend a pine scent? I tried making a candle with pine essential oil and even though I put a ton in the smell was extremely weak.

Kimberly and Emylia 464 is a great wax. I’d go for the blue spruce or the fit scent from Candle a Science, they’re really nice and strong. You’ll never get super strong smelling candles from essential oils, they just don’t throw as strong as fragrance oils. 🙂

This video was so great! Thanks for all the tips. I am new to candle making, and I cant seem to get my soy candles to have any hot throw! I have been using C-3 soy wax from the flaming candle company which seems to handle great. I also have been using fragrance oils from new directions aromatics, which say they are good for candle use but don''t say soy specifically. I am unsure if it is the fragrance oil I am using or if I am not using the right ratio, I was wondering what your wax to fragrance ratio is typically, and if you have any tips for me?Thanks so so much in advance!!!

rosie p No I’ve never heated my jars. Pouring at a lower temperature can help reduce the sticking issue or wet spots as they’re commonly referred too.

Does it matter if you add your fragrances at a low temperature? Lets say at 130f? Will the fragrance blend in well with the wax?

When they burn for 3 hours, the wax has all become liquidy and it doesnt really look nice when its in a clear jar. Is this supposed to happen with soy wax?

Hi Jeff, thank you so much for your videos, they are great! I have a question, I am testing my jars to see how much exactly wax & FO to put in each jar. I did all the formula, and I came out for a 6 oz jar that hols 5.8oz of wax with 10%FO=15 gr of FO and 158gr of wax, but the jar doesn't get full. So, I keep trying to add a little bit of wax and now I just did 160 gr of wax but still not full at the line. What should I do? Thank you for your videos, they have been very informative! We are having a wicking issue with the jars we just bought. We are using the GB 464 wax in same straight sided jars that you have. We have found some inconsistencies that aren't making sense according to the wick guides we have looked at. We have 3 jars with an ECO 10, CD 10 and CD 12. The CD 10 has a large mushroom and a larger melt pool than the other two. This is not making sense since the other 2 have not mushroomed, especially the CD 12. Do you have any suggestions on which one to use. I almost feel like the manufacturer got the wick sizes mixed up. Thank you

I was making candles with recicled glasses and i have a very big problem with air bules or wet spots on the surface and you can see them through the glass!!!! its horrible! i think thas is caused by the wax shrinkage but i dont know how to stop it... here in Argentina we use a percentaje of an additive that makes the soy stronger because of the heat in some times of the year..do you think that this aditive can cause this or may be some temperature issue (the outer temperature too cold)??? thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would recommend the parsoy wax, IGI6006 since it's so easy to work with. You will get a nice hot throw from it and get a better one when as you learn more. Soy is a great wax but can be tricky to get a stong candle in the beginning and can be frustrating when starting out.
As for supplies, I would go to Candle Science and see what they have to offer. They have everything you will need as a beginner. Lone Star, Aztec, Flaming Candle, are all good options as well. I choose Candle Science because they're close to me.

I've been told recently by the manufacture that it holds a max fragrance load of 10%, which is making me have a meltdown because I've been doing 12% for so long. I don't know when this changed exactly. I pour hot, at maybe 165 because I always have issues with them pouring at low temps. Once you add the wax, the temperature will drop a few degrees, so it's not really necessary to wait to pour. I tried testing the hot throw for one candle at 10%, but I get a really subtle hot throw. I'm about to have a meltdown lol

What size wicks do you use for these?

It depends on the wax that you’re going to be using, but for the jelly jars I use an HTP 83

I have just tried this wax for the first time. Everyone gives such good reviews for it. I usually use Ecosoya. I’m having so many issues with frosting. I have never seen frosting this horrible with any wax like I do with this wax. I have tried many pouring temps. 120F seems much better. I’m trying to make melts not candles with it. Can you give me any ideas on how to fix this issue? On CS, so many people are complaining about the frosting issue, so I’m trying to figure out if it is just me or not.

JiasJewels I think it’s more the wax than you at this time. CS has had a lot of issues with this wax the past few months.

I am learning a lot from your videos. I went to hobby lobby today and they didn't have the paraffin and soy mixed wax ( I might be spelling that wrong sorry) so I got the 100% soy that come in a 2 pound bag if I am making roughly 30 candles how many pounds would you say I will need and how much fragrance? I am using a 6 oz jar/glass. another question with that ounce of glass is it better to use the wood wick or the one that you use in your videos?

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 років тому

Kennyetta Watkins For that jar I would use a cotton wick. The wood might be too large of a flame for that size.
As for the jars I would imagine you’re looking at around 5oz of wax per jar.

    Hello,
I have followed your instructions in regards to 464 soy wax but I’m having an issue with my wick. I use 464 wax 8-10% of FO and I heat my wax 180 and pour FO around 135 and pour it 130 into my containers. I use tins 8 oz and my diameter of the container is approximately 3 1/4 so I use CD18 wick but it’s creating a huge flame and a lot of mushrooming what wick would you recommend ? Thank you I hope I hear back from you 🥺🥺. I love your videos by the way! They’re super informal thank you so much!

I just ordered Ecosoya Q230 soy wax from candle science. Would you still hear to 180 degrees and put fragrance in at 145 degrees. I watched your other video and you said that you like to put the fragrant scent at 120゚ and also poor at 120 degrees. Not sure if you have used this soy wax before.

There are a few different sizes for wood wicks. Which size fits the 8 oz jelly jar? Thanks!

The medium from Lone Star works but it's a little hotter than it needs to be. The small is ok but not a full melt pool.
