Chrissy Amphlet was such an amazing woman and singer lost her way too soon......heck out Boys in Town, Science Fiction, Jealous, I'm Jealous, Human on The Inside, and my personal favorite is Elsie (Live). Divinyls were an amazing band
@@michaelasay8587 she didn’t do much?! She was spectacular. No other singer will come close to Chrissy ever! Have you read her book? She went through hell and persevered until the end.
@@michaelasay8587 Divinyls didn’t blow up and get the credit they deserved. And yes no hits really until I Touch Myself which is unfortunate but they still worked so hard while being screwed over by management and their label. Hits don’t necessarily prove that someone worked hard. Divinyls isn’t like any other band and they have actual talent and character. Not many people saw that in them at the time and apparently still don’t since you are commenting this way. I just discovered them last year and was blown away! I will continue to be an advocate for them and many other underrated bands and artists.
80-90's women singers were such an inspiration to young fans, because they sang of true and honest real life experiences. Made me a stronger woman and proud to listens to many 90's alternative lady rockers.
She is an Icon in Australia. There is an Amphlett Lane named after her and her band Divinyls got in the Australian Rock and Roll hall of fame before she died. Her book , Pleasure and Pain is amazing!
I was lucky enough to see them in college, absolutely loved the vixen persona of Chrissy. Sadly, she passed away a few years back after fighting breast cancer and MS. (RIP)
Died back in 2013. A million dollars in debt when the Divynils finished which she paid off rather than declare bankruptcy. Grew up in the era of nice girls and bad boys on TV. She broke the mold.
Brilliant Aussie band ,saw them live during there prime ,in 80's .She delivered that and more with every single performerance ..Chrissy had the most incredibly unique vocal inflictions.
I think it is a double entendre, one line she says ‘break my body with the back of your hand, doesn’t make sense from where I stand’ and goes on to ‘find my body, fix my face’. I think it’s like be addicted to someone who is abusive to you, and you can’t distinguish the pleasure from the pain.
I was lucky enough to see them play at The Playroom on the Gold Coast and they rocked the house. Boys in Town is my favourite. RIP Chrissy Amphlett 💔 Gone too soon
Depends on how hard you are listening to the lyrics. Its easy to just assume this is some bondage thing. But its actually more about a collapsing relationship. How people get drawn to punishing themselves by chasing something thats no good.
Yes, and it seems like a physically abusive relationship. "Break my body with the back of your hand, Doesn't make sense from where I stand," "You've done it once you can do it again," and "Find my body better fix my face." It's actually a horrifying song - wonderfully played by Chrissy.
Chrissie - an Aussie Superstar - the Divinyls, were an awesome no-nonsense rock & rol band and thrilled the Aus pub crowds for years throughout the 80s.
Das divinyls for u , I luv this one the lead singer she crazy as a fox , great performer may she rest in peace. 80’s hit . It’s one of de best of de 80’s thus group and heart tjdy ruled
This song has so many different elements to it & is open to interpretation. When I was young and I would hear this would think she was talking about being in a physically, abusive relationship. Especially when she would say, “break my body with the back of your hand”. I thought it was him hitting her. Whereas, my sister interpreted it as him sexually abusing her. So it really is open to how you hear it. If you listen to the lyrics, she could actually mean both things. At end of the day abuse is emotional and mental entrapment as much as physical. I love the way she sings this song. This is one of my favorites from them.
BACKSTORY: So apparently, part of the story about this song is based on the abusive relationship Chrissy Amphlett and guitarist Mark McEntee (The guy she slaps the hat off) were in. It was not a one sided situation as even Chrissy admitted due to drugs and alcohol, both would be at each others throats while they were a couple. Slapping and screaming, pinching and yelling, it was not a full on Ike and Tina situation and both admitted they were at fault and did it to each other.
Divinyls, were the best of new age/punk growing up for me... I saw that you did - Robert Palmer's - Addicted to Love... I hope you get a chance to watch the "clap back" By Shania Twain, called - Man, I feel like a Woman...
One of you dug it completely and understood it immensely. The other also dug it, but knew better than to comment too much 😊😂. Australian music from the Seventies and Eighties was the best. Now please try "Cold Chisel" Bow River live 2003. Australian music at its best, which owes more to old black American blues than anything. You'll see what I mean. We love the influences of your ancestors here.😮
Glad you are going down the Divinyls rabbit hole. ‘Boys In Town’ and ‘I’m Jealous’ will give you some other sides to the band. Different again but just as intense.
I used to see Chrissy and the Divinyls at the Pier Hotel in Frankston. Bikies, Rockers and the general public loved her. She was hot and would work the crowd up into a fervour. Pleasure and Pain was sometimes the last song and occasionally Chrissy would go Commando in that little dress.... Yep the crowd went wild and Frankston ROCKED!!!
It's probably been said but this is a song about a physically and emotionally abusive relationship, not kinky sex. "Break my body with the back of your hand, makes no sense from where I stand", "Sooner or later I'll find my place, find my body better fix my face", "You've done it once you can do it again, whatever you've done don't try to explain". Singer Chrissie Amphlett was in a "volatile" relationship herself with guitarist, Mark McEntee and it is thought the inspiration for the song came from there.
Not sure you’re getting the lyrics right or the meaning of the song. The song is about a woman who is getting physically abused by her boyfriend or husband. She breaks it off with the guy and says “please don’t ask me how I been getting on” she also says “Sooner or later I’ll find my place, find my body better fix my face” meaning he messed up her face through physical abuse… and she goes on with “break my body with the back of your hand, it doesn’t make sense from where I stand.” Etc! It’s all about being in an abusive relationship
She was having a long time affair with the guitarist and the relationship was very dysfuntional Many levels to that song and it was more about abuse and the addictiveness and confusion of those relationships, not just about sex
RIP Chrissy, legend of Aussie rock. Experienced woman that saw and did a lot.
Chrissy was the ultimate rock chick, she could do and say anything, and get away with it.
She sang songs other girls wouldn't.

Great Aussie band for me their best song is Boys in town, it's a absolute banger
Absolutely 💯
Chrissy Amphlet might be the most underestimated lead singer in rock history. She was a bomb.
True Australian Rock Chic! So many cool song's that are mentioned down below.
I grew up with the Divinyls & saw them live a number of times & Chrissie & the whole band were dynamite each time.
The meaning is lost on these two - it's a song about domestic abuse, not a women being assertive!
That would be from her relationship with the guitar player. Known to be extremely volatile and abusive.
Yep Americans cannot understand the nuances
Many levels to that song and describes an abusive relationship very well
The confusion and the addiction
& don't ask me how I'm getting off
this song is about sexual abuse in a relationship - the divinyls were before their time - a great pub band from australia
Also written by the same duo that wrote Love Is A Battlefield for Pat Benatar.

Exactly these two are hopeless

There's a healthy dose of abuse thrown in for good measure. It's actually a desparately sad song.
