Totally got the Oh Calcutta reference! And just thrilled that you are re-watching this. You Cats never got the recognition you deserved stateside, but it's fantastic and totally holds up.
I got that. Hahaha! I saw Oh! Calcutta! off-Broadway in New York City in the 70s. I saw two of your shows in 1986 - Bumbershoot in Seattle and Expo 86 in my hometown of Vancouver, BC. YOU WERE AMAZING at Expo! At Expo, audiences were not allowed to stand up during music events, but little children and elderly people stood up the entire show. You had them in the palms of your hands. It was the best live show I've seen in my life. Thank you!
@@galeleitch7497 Thanks a bunch for sharing that Gale ...that Seattle jam was a fave of mine and I still have the Tee-Shirt from there ...Vancouver was a blast also it was my first time there and enjoyed the city. Be well - CM
@@stewartcohen7683 we Europeans appreciated Kid Creole and the Coconuts very much. It was the Americans who didn't show them much appreciation. Greetings to you Mundi.
Thank u lots Please pardon the belated response but this is not my channel thus I don’t receive any notifications if my or the group’s name is mentioned.
This interview is priceless, they are both great. Loved Kid Creole and the Coconuts back in the day, lost touch with their music in the 90's, started listening again recently and it is still as fresh and good as ever, only regret is I never saw them live back in the 80's. They were and still are a class act. Thanks for the good times.
I'm glad this came up on my feed. I loved these guys. The laugh at the Height joke was beautiful to see. Coati Mundi alway struck me as a class act, the naughty boy of the band. These two should have done comedy films, they truly are funny.
They can say that fashion came first, but I've been playing their albums on regular rotation for the last ten years or more and MAN they hold up! They're overlooked as all get-out, but not in my world. (Central Texas)
Love this interview. Darnel is so well spoken, intelligent, fashionable. He's the total package and the identity of the band. Only wish Stoney Broder and Cory Daye had been there as well. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band were amazing and under appreciated. Thank you Michelle Foreman for turning me on to them.
OK, my turn to give thumbs up and appreciation for this great interview with two musicians definitely ahead of their time (or sadly underrated...I still don't know if they would have been more successful in the era of musical garbage that we live in 2023...). Thanks a lot for posting this !
Coati, I saw you guys in Edinburgh Scotland in 1982 when I was 18. I was blown away and have told people since then, it was THE best gig i ever saw man. keep the faith man we still love you guys
Great insight interview from these talented guys . I did not expect such poise and composure and frankly intellect . I thought they would be clowning and not be serious but no ....it was very insightful and entertaining .
August lived just down the road from me in Carlton-in-Lindrick, England for a while and I met him him very briefly at a local bbq/garden party. I am a big fan who regrettably never saw him, Coati and the team live as I was working overseas in the 80's. What a great entertainer/band.
Just Fantastic - These Guys are just not what I expected ? - I knew the humour was there because of the Augusts songs ! - But these guy are just fantastic - Like he mentioned the great BLUE RONDO A LA TURK band ! Back in the 90'S I got my self a ticket to see these great guys Who were coming to Yorkshire I was so looking to see August & his Band - Didnt my back go ! - knowing were he would be I wrote him a letter from my hard bed (spine treatment) Asking about an 12"single called - Maladie da mour - He didnt reply - But months later I did recieve a letter - That contained an Autographed photo that takes pride of place in my kitchen -I was so pleased ! That same month I think it was The kids back catalogue was released on CD and Maladie da mour 12" was on one of those albums - right thats my story - like Cote Mundi I've just lost my thread - Great interview with these two great guys - And have you ever tried writing while laughing haha ! Coati Mundi needs correction when he claimed in this video that Darnell and him started the 1940 clothing style. Well, Dr. Buzzards O.S. Band was organized in 1975, I can remember that in early 1973 NYC (all over), and Boston on Newbury St., the Funky Forties Clothing was already very popular. Though I adored Dr. Buzzards, and loved Cory Daye's melodic voice, I disagree with what Andy Hernandez (Coati) said about their innovation.
August was one classy cat. Kid Creole and The Coconuts were class and very underrated. Top notch songs and playing. The first gangsters really.
He's still alive.. They're still performing
Why was? They still are...I saw them in the Hague two months ago and they are amazing
@@ingamajerova5834 Nah, only on stage. Off stage August wears tracksuits and flip flops. Hes not classy anymore.

Yessss!!! Love this comment
Great interview but one thing I'd like to point out Cab was wearing Zoot suits a decade before the riots in LA in the 30s
18:40 onwards... Gold!
I heard that the zoot suit started in Harlem and the Latino communities on the west coast quickly picked up on it
I always got confused with them and the other classic band I liked called “Dr Buzzard original savannah band”
we are all part of the musical fam
ZOOT SUIT..Government and mainly the military clashed over this.
Hahaha! Did he say “may you have black children “?!! Fabulous
I guess they were hinting that Morris Day and The Time aka Prince stole their look ! 😝
But, Morris made it C.O.O.L.
