Canada (British Columbia) is fortunate to have a giant Breakwater called Vancouver Island, Happy New Year to our friends in Washington, California and Oregon and stay safe❤
Those waves are nothing on Thanksgiving day in 1974 on Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu the waves were coming in 35 feet tall for as far as you could see in both directions, and you couldn't hear anything but the roar of the ocean and there were guys out surfing, crazy. That was one of the most memorable times on Oahu while I was stationed there in 1974 & 1975 Glad I got to see that tropical paradise.
My dad, a pastor at the time, was with an emergency response team that day. He said the water had gone past the road, flooded some homes, and the waves were deafening.

I haven't seen waves this big since we moved from the area 40 years ago, and even then we stayed away when the waves got that high. They are beautiful and I do miss the beach.
All those people on the beach are going to be the same ones who are going to get injured or have property damage and then complain about the government not doing anything to prevent it.
A huge storm did not cause these waves. It was an earthquake that happened in the middle of the ocean, and it took three days for it to reach Southern California.
Just prior to these small tsunami waves hitting the West Coast there were multiple earthquakes on the west side of the Pacific. All of this was leading up to the mega quake that just hit Japan and could cause a huge tsunami resulting in a massive destruction and death on the west coast of the USA. People need to be getting alerted and get away from the coast and told the time frame has passed for the danger
Yeah these destroyed nearby buildings that were farther away than all the people. This is just dumb...theres kids running directly next to the shoreline and even a mom with a stroller with a baby inside.
They just barely fix the pier. Before you couldn't walk all the way down to the end.😢 i visit my mom who now lives in national city and before i moved, we used to live in ocean beach. Our street was cape may Ave. Miss living there. It was so peaceful.❤

There in USA it is purportedly stated that the waves were caused by a storm out in the Pacific. In UK we got the report on the day it happened that it was 'A rouge wave that was predicted' And I'm seeing other people saying that neither is this a storm or a rouge wave but infact the result of earthquakes in the far Pacific. Plus Japan has had an earthquake in the same period and earthquakes can come in 'storms' where earthquakes create other earthquakes (not to be confused with aftershocks or follow up tremors) where the tension is moved to other parts of the fault line or neighbouring fault lines, and causes further individual quakes or creates geological instabilities to occour such as would cause perhaps things like underwater landslides, and if these were subtle enough within an oceanic basin such as the Pacific, I could find it feasible to think it possible that this has the potential to produce strong but relatively non destructive ocean currents and waves, that when interacting with the usual ocean currents, present as something like this. Possibly. I dont know Im no geologist or anything. That accepted, the differing reports seem baffling to think. A storm off shore vs a rouge wave that was pedicted beforehand and led to people gathering... And whoever would make the decision to let a young kid go with them to such a dangerous place is crazy when we have all seen how unpredictable the ocean can be on a saturday... never mind when its not got (at a minimum) a rouge wave coming into shallow coastal waters. And you know that the parents are irresponsible by default because side note anyone who gets their young pre teen a Starbucks to drink while putting the kid and themselves at risk of the mercy of the ocean is clearly a fucking dickhead.
