  • WELCOME BACK TO HERKY THE CAVALIER'S CHANNEL
    We recently went to the vet to get our anal sacs expressed! It's very important to do so, as it can prevent our anal sacs getting impacted, which can be very uncomfortable and painful.

    Thank you for posting this video. We had no idea this was even a thing.
    Two days after this video came out, our Charlie was acting weird and his butt looked swollen so we brought him to the vet right away and it was his anal glands. They managed to drain one and the other one bursted the next day, poor guy. He’s on antibiotics and pain killers for the next week or so but if it wasn’t for this video, we would have never known this.

    I felt terrible when my female cavalier ruptured an anal gland! My male NeVer had any issues and because i didnt pay attention---she had to undergo emergency procedure then had to go back to the vet several times to tend to the wound and make sure things were healing well. Manuka honey has antibacterial properties and I used this on her bum per vet recommendation for a few weeks. This is a helpful video so other dogs won't have to go through this emergency.

      it can also be worms or allergies. have it checked out by a vet to make sure it isn't worms or anal glands.

    I just found your channel and how I wish I saw this anal gland video awhile back. My longhair chihuahua Pebbles is a tiny little girl and was affected by an infected anal gland and was placed on antibiotics and pain medicine (and of course i cried)! Well now I am educated (more than I need to be lol) about the anal glands and poop size. Pebbles is completely healed, but I started her on a product called Glandex to bulk up her poop. I do feed her expensive grain free food, but her poop was rather small until I added the Glandex, BTW she loves it and thinks it’s a treat instead of medicine. I’ll still go visit the vet and have them check her in about a month. Thanks again for your informative video.

    If your dog and or cat does not have problems with emptying its anal glands in the first place I highly recommend leaving them alone. the last thing you want is for your dog to start having problems emptying their anal glands because of the unnecessary trauma of getting them done in the first place.

      AGREED! Only if the anal sacs are full should they be emptied.

    I have two cavaliers brothers that just turned one, a ruby and Blenheim and one is really prone to an ear infection so we had to go to the vet with both of them to get some antibiotics and the vet checked everything and realised both of their anal glands were quite full so they emptied them, something I never knew so we will be taking them every few months now :)

      Herky The Cavalier we did go to the vet and he had an infected anal glad. Now we have medicine and a cone.

      At least you got it under control before it ruptured! Wishing a prompt recovery to your Dexter!

    A lot of groomers in my area offer this procedure...
    But why do you not recommend going to the groomer for it?

    • @herkythecavalier
      @herkythecavalier  6 років тому +5

      Sol4rpleXus because they sometimes don’t empty the sacs from the inside, but only from the outside. I would also trust a vet more just because I don’t want the anus to get accidentally ripped!

    • @bobbib2713
      @bobbib2713 6 років тому

      I agree....the Vet is trained to empty the glands on the inside....the groomer only does it from the outside.

    Very important topic! I didn’t even know dogs had anal glands before I got my Cavalier! Now, because Misha has such soft stools, he has to get them expressed once every month! Luckily we have a great vet who does it for free!

    I don't know why, but my youngest cocker spaniel has to get her anal glands drained more often than my oldest one. I've only taken my oldest to get her glands drained once since we've had her. But with my youngest it seems like we have to take hee every month.

    Hi! I'm a new Cavalier parent, Skye is 5 month old. Can you please advise when is the best time to get her spayed, is it before 6 months old or after a year old. My Vet says before 6 months old but i'm a little worried. Thank you! ❤️

    • @elizabethvalencia6393
      @elizabethvalencia6393 6 років тому +1

      6 months is a good age to get them spayed but some people like me prefer waiting until they had the first heat cycle. it honestly depends on your situation because if you have the time to keep your girl on a short leash while she is in a heat to avoid pregnancy than its better to wait until she is fully mature.

    • @herkythecavalier
      @herkythecavalier  6 років тому +3

      There's divided opinion on the topic, but I think it's better to wait until after the first heat cycle. :)

      @Herky The Cavalier & @elizabeth valencia, Thank you for your response. From my research on Cavalier's everyone has their own opinion but my gut is telling me to wait until after her first heat cycle, today makes her 5 months old and she was the smallest out of the litter. 'she is tiny for 5 months only weighing 8.3 pounds I feel she should develop more. Our breed is different from other breeds so we have to be careful. Thank you again for responding. ❤️❤️💕💕 @Herky The Cavalier I love your videos they are so informative and I'm learning a lot being a new Cavalier parent 😘

      I asked my vet 2 wks. ago that same question and she suggested spaying at 4 months and NOT to wait until her 1st heat.

    Hi! This question has nothing to do with anal glands but I was wondering do you know anything about SM because I read it's very common in cavaliers and mine is showing a bunch of symptoms. I'm very worried...
