As a Christian, I have read this story many times, and it's one of my favorites. One thing about it that isn't really clear until you research the history of Nineveh. The city was near the Tigris River, which connects to the Persian gulf, and one of their chief gods was a fish god. So picture it from their perception. A large fish, the avatar of their god, appears and vomits up a prophet who declares doom if they don't repent. I find it a hilarious example of God's sense of humor.

They are worshipping one of the 4 end time fallen angel in charge of all the waterways. While here, they have their fun and trick humanity into worship them as gods. Prayers are energy, heard, felt and desired by these entitites. Its food to them and they grant your desires until your soul is emptied. This is why angels are NOT to be prayed to, but one may pray to the Father to send angel if needed. All heart energy goes to the Father as instructed by His Son.

Seems to me that the fish god may have just been passing on its way to the place that fish and alligator gods rest. It would be rude to just let the Hebrew drown and for the Torah to be even more confusing, so Fish-god swallowed the bloke and vomited him back up to continue his quest. All very plausible.

39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Spiritually is meant to be a simplistic thing. This is why God says we must be innocent as a child to reach heaven. The moral of this story is God places a calling on some of our lives. Which means we must walk accordingly to his direction. When we go off our path we will find ourselves somewhere not desired. It will be known to even others and ourselves that something is wrong and off. Alone, without direction....until we seek him and give ourselves to him...willingly.

Remember ! Satan imitates EVERYTHING THE MOST HIGH GOD OF ISRAEL HAS. SUCH AS THE HOLY SPIRIT IS IMITATED WITH THE HOLY GHOST,.... TMH HAS MESSENGERS & SERVANTS,. AND A SPECIAL PEOPLE HE CALLS A WIFE... AT 2 CORINTHIANS 11; 13 14 and 15, Paul speaks of Satan transforming into an angel of light and that false apostles/Messengers and deceitful workers/servants, ... AND 2COR11;2 PAUL CLEARLY ESPOUSES A WIFE AS A SPECIAL PEOPLE, TO THE ONE WITH THE FALSE APOSTLES, WHO HE SAYS IN VERSE 14 HAS TRANSFORMED HIMSELF INTO AN ANGEL OF LIGHT... TMH HAS HAD ONE DAY OF VENGEANCE, WHERE HE DESTROYED THE ORIGINAL LAND MAKING IT A DESOLATION AS WELL AS THE NEIGHBORING NATIONS.... as told in Jeremiah 25:26 and 27 and also Isaiah and Joel and a couple of other books... AND HE WILL SET HIS HAND A SECOND TIME TO RECOVER THE REMNANTS OF THOSE WHO REFUSED TO OBEY THE VOICE OF TMH & SUBMIT THEMSELVES TO THE 70-YEAR BABYLON PUNISHMENT AND RAN TO OTHER LANDS,... AFTER PUNISHING THOSE ONES, HE WILL DESTROY THOSE NATIONS AND THE LAND THAT HE SPOKE OF CASTING his people into when he destroyed their original land (ZECHARIAH 1:17)... Which this second time Will be a repeat of the first visit he made... THAT SAME ONE HAS MADE A DAY FOR HIM TO RETURN AND SPEAKS OF IT IN REVELATIONS... TMH HAS A SON HE NAMES AT PS 2:6,7,(THE LORD DECLARED THE DECREE OF.HIS KING & SON, LONG BEFORE JC WAS... *YET MEANS NOW*).PS 3:5, & EXO 4:22... THAT ONE SPOKEN OF AT 2 CORINTHIANS SAID HE HAD A SON WHO HE APPROVES OF, THOUGH HE NEVER SPEAKS AS LONG AND WITH AS MUCH CONFIDENCE AS TMH DOES WHENEVER HE SPEAKS OF HIS SON OR ANYTHING ELSE, THAT VOICE DID SAY THIS IS MY SON... etc PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING IN THAT NEW TESTAMENT LOOKS LIKE A COPYCAT OF WHAT'S IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, IT DOES HAVE SMALL DIFFERENCES THAT MAKE GREAT DIFFERENCES IN THE MEANINGS , AND NAMES MAY BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT BUT IT IS CLEARLY AN ATTEMPT THAT INVITATION.... I KNOW I'VE SEEN MORE THAN 30 TO 50 SCRIPTURES THAT CLEARLY IDENTIFIES SATAN THAT FATHER AND THAT SON.... He even imitates a covenant... Whereas TMH MADE A COVENANT WITH THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE IN HOREB, THEN HE ADDED A NEW COVENANT TO THAT ONE FOR THE NEW PEOPLE US IN DEUTERONOMY 29... THE IMITATION WAS, FIRST HIS PEOPLE HAD TO BELIEVE THAT HE IS THEIR SAVIOR AND WOULD GRANT THEM EVERLASTING LIFE, (EVEN THOUGH HE EXPLAINED AT JOHN 17:3, that eternal life was KNOWING THAT TMH IS THE ONLY TRUE GOD. AND KNOWING HIM NOT TO BE. AND JUST AS TMH MADE IN ADDITION BY MAKING ANOTHER COVENANT FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS IN MOAB, TO REAFFIRM THAT HE/TMH IS OUR GOD & WE ARE HIS PEOPLE, .. THE IMITATOR ADDED TO HIS FIRST AGREEMENT, BY ADDING TO THE ORIGINAL REQUIREMENT OF BELIEVING IN HIM THEY NOW ALSO HAVE TO ENDURE TILL THE END...... THIS COVENANT KEEPING IS REALLY BAFFLING WHEN I HEAR PEOPLE SPEAKING OF KEEPING THE COVENANT OF TMH, THEN SAYING THAT THEY HAVE A NEW LORD AND SAVIOR,... I CAN'T MAKE SENSE OUT OF THAT. !!

Thankyou. Might I give a deeper layer.
Our thoughts are the sea and God breaths his truth on our thoughts and the friction causes a storm. Jonas is forced into the belly of a fish and tacken to the depths of mans thought and Jonas is allowed to see himself as he truly is. From bottom to top. He cries out in despair and understanding.
He realized that every thought and action effects everyone else and that if you live as a human you make everyone else live the same way. God sends people with his light as an example to others so they can see more than themselves and focus upwards.
So if a Rabbi speaks out, inviting us to connect and think on a higher level, I say THANKYOU. Your light connects to others so brightening a dark sea.
    Blessings.

Thank you so much for your comments.
We know that the King of Nineveh was Pharaoh from the ancient texts: see
Mechilta, Beshalach 2:6. and Yalkut Shimoni, Shemot 176

How did Pharoah became king of Nineveh when Israel didn't physically exist and there were no judges for Israel .

Rabbi Manis Friedman, I’m sorry but if it’s not in the Bible it’s not true! The Bible says let God be true and every man a liar. If your other sacred writings contradict the Bible, then they’re wrong. The Bible NEVER says pharaoh was the king of Nineveh.

@@johnmushall7420 You may be right. But not for the reason you give. If something is not recorded in the bible, it is not a “Contradiction”. It is only a contradiction if the bible says something different.

Thank you for such an interesting and encouraging story Rabbi. It has a good moral too. It is comforting to know how compassionate God is. However, I am afraid the scripture (Tanakh (Old Testament)) doesn't fully agree with the way you explain it. According to 2 Kings 14:25 Jonah was alive and prophesied during the time of King Jeroboam II, son of Jehoash king of Israel. I am sure this is hundreds of years after the events of the Exodus. So the Pharoah who chased the Israelites near the red sea must be long dead by the time of Jonah even if he isn't drowned in the red sea. If one portion of the Tanakh (2 Kings 14:25) gives clear proof for when a story that is written in another portion of it (Book of Johan) has taken place and if this time contradicts with the one mentioned in other ancient texts, shouldn't that portion of Tanakh (2 Kings 14:25) be given more preference over other supplementary texts? Isn't Tanakh considered more sacred, holy and is more important than the other texts?
