David (BOH-ee) was so diverse and creative but more importantly he didn't care what the industry was looking for. He made the music that spoke to him and we were all just lucky to come along for the ride. Never be another like him.
This song was recorded 50 years ago on February 4 - the band is The Spiders from Mars - Mick Ronson on Lead Guitar/Harmonies, Trevor Bolder on Bass, Mick Woodmansy on Drums. Saw him live on the “Diamond Dogs” tour. I think it was my second date with my wife of 42 years.
Another great artist I grew up with. David Bowie was an English singer songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He has had a lot of great songs including "Starman", "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Heroes" etc.
David Bowie fan my whole life. ♥️ Love you discovering old stuff. Nothing on the radio the last 10 years can hold a candle to it. You need to do ‘Young Americans!’ Background vocals sung and arranged by a young Luther Vandross.
Mick Ronson - electric guitar, Mellotron, string arrangement, backing vocals Trevor Bolder - bass guitar Mick Woodmansey - drums Basically given the name The Spiders from Mars by Bowie. All from the city of Hull area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, UK. Produced by Ken Scott & Bowie.
Bowie was always at the pinnacle of creative and evolving music, style, theatrics, characterization, and innovation his whole career. I honestly doubt you will ever see or hear so much variety from any other artist. His wife Iman is indeed gorgeous (a very successful model from Somalia), and a wonderful woman in her own right. She was a huge fan of his and used to go and see him in concert before they were finally introduced. It ended up being one of the most enduring and endearing relationships in rock history. When he passed away it was like losing an utterly unique creature from the face of the earth, like an endangered species being snuffed out. I said the same about Prince.
I took my daughter Melissa to see Bowie in Atlanta in 2007. One of the greatest live shows (3 hours) I've ever seen. Nothing like 10,000 people shouting, "Awww, wham, bam, thank you ma'am." from "Suffragette City." I saw Labyrinth, too. Bowie was indeed a rock star, and his wife, Iman, truly beautiful. If you wanna see a great performer, check Bowie out on Live By Request. It'll truly blow your mind!
Great song by a great artist! Mick Ronson is the awesome guitarist you are hearing. Every era of David Bowie's music is different. This is the 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars' lineup. David created a persona, Ziggy Stardust, who he performed as for a few years. After that, he changed lineups and his style continued to evolve every new album or so. "Heroes", "Let's Dance", "Suffragette City", "Is There Life on Mars?", "Ashes to Ashes"... yeah it's a rabbit hole for sure.
I was hooked in 1974 aged 12 and has been my favourite ever since. 6 years he's been gone and always missed. "Life on Mars" official video. "Ziggy Stardust" "Jean Genie" "Moonage Daydream" "Panic in Detroit"is funky as hell Lucky to have seen him in concert 2004, Sydney Australia
The band is called the Spiders from Mars. The lead guitarist is Mick Ronson and when Bowie and Ronson we're together it was the greatest music in the world, with only the Beatles so influential in there respective times.
David Bowie was a writer, a composer, a guitarist and the singer of his songs... Yes, he was complete and a genius... I miss him, as all of his fans... You have a big smile when you listen to that track, as me, one of my favorite ones, but he also can make you cry... He was just a wonderful man... A big fan of UK music, love from France 🇫🇷😘
Woody Woodmansey, Spiders From Mars drummer and the only Spider still alive, still has a Bowie tribute band called Holy Holy, along with Tony Visconti, Bowie's long time producer. I got to see them a few weeks after Bowie died. Such a great show. I was also fortunate to see about 20 of Bowie's shows between 1976 and his final tour in 2004. What an outstanding writer, singer, actor, artist.
Woody as left the band just Tony Visconti. Glenn Gregory from Heaven 17.lead singer.still touring. Would have seen them if woody was still on the Drums.
It makes me sad that Bowie will never witness if there is a Starman but it makes me happy that he has helped so many cope with everyday life with his amazing catalog of true artistic music
Yes to the David Bowie rabbit hole! Welcome! I can’t say enough about him as an artist, so I’ll just say his music saved my life and leave it at that. Definitely check out Space Oddity. It’s one of his earliest songs, which is amazing given how sophisticated it is! He tried his hand at a lot of different genres, so you will hear a lot of variety; no two songs sound the same, really. Lots of great suggestions in the comments, but they focus most on his earlier work. I would also recommend some of his 90s stuff, when he got super heavy and industrial - Hallo Spaceboy is a great one from that time, and there are amazing live versions out there to check out. Also I’m Afraid of Americans. His final album, released on his birthday just two days before he died, is a jazz masterpiece. Enjoy the rabbit hole, friend. Oh! You should also check out the video of him putting MTV on blast for not playing more videos by black artists. It’s from 1982 or 83. I miss him.
LOVE David Bowie! R.I.P. The band was "The Spiders from Mars." Mick Ronson on lead guitar and backing vocals ,Trevor Bolder on bass. In the song, I wonder if he's speaking of an alien? "Let all the children boogie!" There's a great live version of this song, btw.
Welcome to Bowie - I am a bit envious that you are discovering him for the first time - I think I had genuine love for this man and I was devastated when he died, I didn't think he would ever die and in a way he never will - incredible artist and a beautiful humble man
When David Bowie passed, the saddest thing to me was that my parents did not know who he was, even if they grew up in the same era! I'm glad for things like reactions where people can get to know amazing artists from all places and times
I have real trouble listening to David without crying. He's been a constant in my life since 1972, and for him to suddenly not be sharing the same air as us is heartbreaking.
1st time I heard this was from a scene in The Martian. Now it's one of my fave Bowie songs! ♥ I suggest following up Space Oddity with the sequel song - Ashes to Ashes
Bowie was a GREAT artist. The band musicians changed all the time but he always had the best. The oones playing on this song are The Spiders from Mars with Mick Robson, Woody Woodmansey, and Trevor Bolder.
David Bowie on acoustic guitar and vocals. Mick Ronson on the electric guitar, backing vocals, I think keyboards as well, and also did the string arrangements. Trevor Bolder on bass. Woody woodmansey on drums. Sadly all have passed away except for Woody, but these guys were so good they’re gonna live forever.
AWESOME!! Love David Bowie! His wife Iman originally from Ethiopia is gorgeous!! I think she is a model and they have a daughter! Thank you love your reaction!!❤️
Starman is off the album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." You need to listen to the whole album in order of the songs listed, like we did back in the day.
As far as band members go I don't ever remember knowing any of the backing band behind David Bowie it was always David Bowie, that was the bit, David Bowie!
One of my top five favorite songs of all time. That album, Ziggy Stardust, is one of the best in rock history. Thanks very much for doing this reaction video, sir.
Hi, I've seen Bowie twice. Oh !my! Fantastic! The second time I saw him, Peter Frampton was his guitarist. Love all his music. My fave is Ashes to Ashes. Lately, Cat People has been on my mind. Check out those two and everything else he's done. Genius.
Off the Diamond Dogs album, 3 songs, in a row that blend into each other seamlessly. Sweet Thing, Candidate, Sweet Thing(reprise). ANY song from Alladin Sane but start with Time. Please, do the 3, you will not be disappointed. 🍻🖖✌️
David Bowie is so cool😎 Can’t wait for more Steely Dan on your channel. You are really gonna enjoy that ride! They are unique and their music is very intricate and beautifully produced (which I know you appreciate). 🌺✌️
Welcome to the world of David Bowie! I've been a lifelong fan. In fact, my first concert was Bowie at the Academy of Music in Philly in 1974. It was the Ziggy Stardust tour and he performed the whole album, in order, for the first set. It was amazing! Looking forward to you seeing you go down this rabbit hole. Other peoples' suggestions for you are awesome and I would add "Heroes" to the song list.
Bowie also wrote "All the Young Dudes" that was made popular by Mott the Hoople. I always liked how abit of Moonage Daydream was used in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Good stuff.
My Husband and I were just dancing around my Mother's house last week singing Bowie's "LET'S DANCE", she was getting a kick out of us, lol. 😂 That, and "Ashes to Ashes" are my favorite Bowie songs; every one completely different from the other.
Van this is just one of many great tunes from the mind blowing album "Ziggy Stardust" ..so far ahead of it's time when it came out. You should react to every one of e'm on this album. go down this rabbit hole....
You're right to plan to do "A Space Oddity," it's one of the essential Bowie tracks. You should also do "Golden Years" if you haven't done that one yet. You'll love it. He's had many phases to his career, and "Golden Years" was in a very interesting middle period for him. If you want to revisit Labyrinth, do "As The World Falls Down."
Thanks so much for this - it's probably my favorite by DB - but then again.. go on down that "rabbit hole" - so many creative and beautiful songs.. and of course.. his collaboration with Queen on "Under Pressure" -- I always enjoy your reactions.. :)
Its hard to explain, but as a 11 to 12 Yr old I thought I was in on a secret, I couldn't believe that my childish little world somehow felt that Bowie knew exactly what we were doing and feeling, unfortunately the world and music has definitely lost our Starman to the universe that at least we shared for a speck in time.
Dude! Only crazy people don’t like labyrinth, he was amazing as gareth! And the soundtrack to that movie was superb. My cousin introduced that movie to me and my sisters and after that my little sister knew anytime she heard a Bowie song, whether she’d heard the song or not, that it was him lol. Such a unique voice!
mick ronson..underrated guitar licks...bowie has a huge library of completly different songs ...each record was vastly different than the next...this is mid 70's ..he had early and late and then he had 80's then he had 90's oh and 2000's.fame ..gean genie...diamond dogs..sufragette city...blue jean ..lets dance im afraid of americans ..he had a band called tin machine that did some way different bowie tunes and jump was in there around that time...the bowie/queen collaberation "under pressure" i could go on and on
Years later after the this song Starman ,David Bowie made a film called THE MAN THAT FELL YO EARTH, about an alien who comes to Earth . Should check it out .
The question that you have to ask about Mr. Bowie is did he follow trends, or did he create them? He was a force in the industry for an exceptionally long time, so I suspect it was a bit of both.
Brother Van, the Ziggy Stardust era may be the way to start to try and figure out Bowie. Talented for sure. He's mysterious to me. Not trying to change the subject, but I want to tell you: When you asked about David's producers it reminded me. This may seem random, but if you want to check out a fun band that showed up in 1980's that somehow got overlooked .... please check out "The Producers". Live videos are best. Songs: "She Sheila", "What's He Got?", "What She Does to Me".
Hey LFR fam--- Love you guys, you should give these Bowie songs a try. first--- Golden years. then Wild is the wind. What diversity these 2 songs are and they are on the same album. OK his band....on drums---Mick Woodmansey, lead guitar----Mick Ronson, Bass....Trevor Bolder,....David did rhythm guitar, sax, and of course vocals. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from mars. What an album. Talent you dont get anymore. Love you LFR. Stay safe.
Oh man, such a great song of his...not that Bowie did anything bad. Mick Robson on electric guitar, Mellotron, string arrangements, backing vocals, Trevor Bolder bass and Mick Woodmansey on drums.
Van, if you get to react to Bowie's very funky Fame, note that his mate John Lennon from The Beatles is on backing vocals. Most people don't ever pick up
Van since you liked this song and called David Bowie a rock star, which he is, you should check out the song Star by Bowie from this same album. Just pick a song by Bowie to react to. There are so many songs that it is hard to name one or two for you to react to.
Yesss "Labyrinth," I see you! And given those other movies you mentioned, I think we came up the same time. ;) Good stuff. And this song is SO AMAZING.
It’s ahead of it’s time, but you also have to remember this was the decade of the space race between the US and what then was the USSR and remember the US went to the moon in 1969 so it’s the height of space hype it dominated everything alongside the Vietnam war in the US of A.
It's bow ie like bow and arrow or bow tie! This is one of my faves.i've always seen the top of the pops performance of this with his ginger hair and patterned quilted catsuit please check that out.he was very visual and new what he wanted for his videos. Please do space oddity, life on Mars, the man who fell to earth, ashes to ashes and China girl.glad you like him and yes I've seen labyrinth he was great in it dance baby dance! Lol
David (BOH-ee) was so diverse and creative but more importantly he didn't care what the industry was looking for. He made the music that spoke to him and we were all just lucky to come along for the ride. Never be another like him.
1990, got to see him in Tampa at his Sound and Vision tour. Simply amazing!
@Miles Doyle I don't care
@Miles Doyle the 11th commandment: keep thy religion to thyself
50 YEARS!!! Thank you for reminding how freaking old I am lol
That’s so cool! I saw him in 2000, 2004, and 2005. I wish I saw him as Ziggy, but there was a small hitch in that I didn’t exist yet 😂
Heroes, suffragette cite, Ziggy stardust, Rebel Rebel that’s a tiny bit that I love, but it’s really so many 🌹❤️✌️
Rebel Rebel was always my favorite

@Miles DoyleWell.... thankyou for sharing that. Not really contextually relevant to David Bowie but fell free to express yourself.
I don’t think a lot of people are doing much Bowie, you just made me realize that🤔 how totally unfortunate because he actually amazing 🤩 🌹👍
I took my daughter Melissa to see Bowie in Atlanta in 2007. One of the greatest live shows (3 hours) I've ever seen. @@artfuldodger8732 I think it may just be for this tour, once Covid is no longer an issue. I think he's got a few more tours in him.
@@MrBastage Thanks for that I know there at Birmingham Town Hall. I'm going there to see Macy Gray who supported Bowie in America
It makes me sad that Bowie will never witness if there is a Starman but it makes me happy that he has helped so many cope with everyday life with his amazing catalog of true artistic music
David Bowie rip. Saw him perform in Toronto back in 1974. He truly was the Starman ♥️🇨🇦

You always know it's him when you hear the first word! So many greats from Bowie!
Labyrinth is what introduced me to Bowie at age 5 as well.
Welcome to Bowie - I am a bit envious that you are discovering him for the first time - I think I had genuine love for this man and I was devastated when he died, I didn't think he would ever die and in a way he never will - incredible artist and a beautiful humble man
The GOAT!!! Nothing else to say💥
Lovely to see you smiling and enjoying this.

That’s actually Mick Ronson, guitar god. My phone keeps changing what I typed
Bowie is a legit musical genius and wildly creative. You're gonna love this rabbit hole.
The Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies!!! This man got awesome music!
David Bowie was the Song writer, guitar 🎸 player and singer. Amazing artist!
Bowie and Prince could have owned the music world together. Appreciate your review of this! Thanks!
AWESOME!! Love David Bowie! His wife Iman originally from Ethiopia is gorgeous!! I think she is a model and they have a daughter! Thank you love your reaction!!❤️
If I'm honest with myself, this is my favorite song from Bowie... With his catalog, it's hard to pick a favorite... But I always come back to this.
Starman is off the album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." You need to listen to the whole album in order of the songs listed, like we did back in the day.

Almost a 50 year catalog of music to draw from. LOVE David Bowie. Enjoy.
Going onto 53 years. Space Oddity is from 1969, although his career began long before that but he just couldn't brake the music scene
Without a doubt, this is my favorite Bowie song. Thanks for reacting!
David Bowie was and will ever be an inspiration for progressive minds.

This was in the movie “The Martian” with Matt Damon. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of that film
Van this is just one of many great tunes from the mind blowing album "Ziggy Stardust" ..so far ahead of it's time when it came out. You should react to every one of e'm on this album. go down this rabbit hole....
You should see him and the band playing this ( top of the pops) that performance made Bowie a super star
This is from Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (the band). His musicians changed a lot.
You're right to plan to do "A Space Oddity," it's one of the essential Bowie tracks.
You should also do "Golden Years" if you haven't done that one yet. You'll love it.
He's had many phases to his career, and "Golden Years" was in a very interesting middle period for him.
A later track that I like a lot, that I associate with the movie Lost Highway is "I'm Deranged." When I hear it I always feel like I'm entering a dream world or nightmare. It's definitely haunting.
If you want to revisit Labyrinth, do "As The World Falls Down."
Mick Ronson - guitar, keyboards, recorder, backing vocals
Trevor Bolder - bass guitar
Mick (Woody) Woodmansy - drums
David Bowie - vocals, twelve-string guitar
Well, you did ask 😃
I saw him in concert in 1985 in Indianapolis. The Best
Great song. Almost every Bowie song is gold
Labyrinth is so Amazing!!! Congrats on watching it!!!
OMG YES! My favorite Bowie song.

The song Life on Mars was used in the movie Licorice Pizza.
My absolute favorite Bowie cut!!
Years later after the this song Starman ,David Bowie made a film called THE MAN THAT FELL YO EARTH, about an alien who comes to Earth . Should check it out .
David Bowie rabbit holes ,Amen brother
Got to see David Bowie during the Ziggy era - in Memphis. So FN good.
Notice the "sample" of the Supremes song, "You Keep Me Hanging On" right before the verse.
I love love love this song. I also like The Brazilian cover of it by Seu Jorge; it's very relaxed.

After you listen to 'Space Oddity' check out 'Life on Mars' that is my absolute favorite Bowie song. He loved outerspace!!! ✌️🚀
My husband favourite song too and that music video!!!

Love this song! It’s also in one of the guardians of the galaxy movies.
You should listen to David Bowies panic in Detroit to good one.
Every time Bowie put out a new album he'd hire a completely new band.
I was watching The Martian the other night and it has this song…frickin’ love this song!
