    Note to people looking to do this job: if you can’t remember last time the pcv valve grommet was replaced plan on it being dry rotted. My grommet like many others fell in after being forced to cut it off so to be safe I removed the valve cover and cleaned the pcv area out. Order a valve cover seal along with spark plugs and valve cover tube seals if it has been a while since these items have replaced BEFORE YOU DO THIS JOB. You can always return them if you don’t have any issues!!

      Absolutely agree with you, unless you want to play surgeon and meticulously pick the PCV valve grommet apart like I did, the best solution is to pull the whole valve cover. This is especially true if you haven't done the VCG in the past, as it is probably leaking or seeping at higher mileage. Thanks for watching!

      +secks4rmlwd11 If your vacuum lines haven't been replaced before they're definitely due by now, but be prepared for sticker shock on some of the OEM lines if you go that route. Cold air intake doesn't do much more than make noise to be honest, but if you want your truck to sound a bit more "racecar" then go for it. Thanks for watching!

    I wish I could say it was better, and we have changed a lot of parts to improve mileage. I get about 14-15 MPG in the city and 20 on the highway - with the wind pushing me. Typically, the 3RZ-FE gets 20+ in the city and on the highway in Tacomas and slightly lower in 4Runners. My old T100 (full size truck - predecessor to Tundra) was getting over 25MPG highway and 20MPG in the city with the 5 speed manual and the 3RZ.

    • @redonKiLaus

      You may see a decrease in fuel efficiency, burning oil, or a lack of power. It's a good item to replace every 30-50k miles, especially considering they are only $10 plus the cost of the grommet. Thanks for watching!

    • @redonKiLaus
      @redonKiLaus 10 років тому

      Toyota recommends every 30K miles. The valve itself is under $10, so it is cheap insurance against any problems. Thanks for watching!

  • @rkgsd

    Any reason an aftermarket PCV and gommet from Fram or Beck Arnley, etc wouldn't be good enough? It's a pretty simple part.

    • @redonKiLaus
      @redonKiLaus 9 років тому

      rkgsd There's a couple reasons I don't like the aftermarket ones - first, the valves are plastic, and have been known to break. Also, from what I have read on forums, the check ball does not seal properly, and gas mileage suffers with the aftermarket valves. Since the Toyota part is under $10, you should really just spend the little bit extra and go OEM. Thanks for watching!

      Had a heck of time getting the PCV valve out as well. Video was useless also not showing how to actually get the bugger out. That said heres some advice as I also had my grommet fall inside the hole.
      I cut off a piece of aluminum armature wire and shaped it into a 90 degree fishhook to fish the grommet out of the hole. Once you catch the grommet in the hole and bring it up to the opening of the engine, grab your pliers and grab it with that and gently and slowly yank the grommet out.
      Was scary thinking I had to take off the whole valve cover, so this was a far easier solution. Its good that the design of the engine is made so that the grommet itself if it does fall in it wont stray to far away that you can't hook it with the wire.

    Would you get a gas smell when it's time to change it?

    • @redonKiLaus
      @redonKiLaus 10 років тому

      No, I rarely get a "gas smell" from my truck. I did not actually need to replace the PCV valve, even at 165K miles (I checked it, and it tested good), but it was a cheap bit of preventative maintenance. I will say this: my truck used to occasionally smell like fuel after driving, and when I replaced my vacuum lines (I did nearly all of them), the smell went away. There will always be a faint smell of fuel, but if it is abnormally strong, I recommend first checking the vacuum lines that run to and around the charcoal canister as a possible culprit.

    • @riders315
      @riders315 10 років тому

      Does a 2001 Toyota Tacoma standard cab have a pvc valve? I'll check my vacuum lines tomorrow!! I do get the same gas smell and its strong after I drive. I know its not the gas lines or gas tank because it was all replaced due to the recall for the frame.

    • @redonKiLaus
      @redonKiLaus 10 років тому +1

      Yeah, all modern vehicles have PCV valves. If yours is a 2RZ (2.4L) or 3RZ (2.7L), you can follow my video to replace the PCV valve.
      When I checked and replaced my vacuum lines, most of them were very hard and when I removed them, they cracked. Many of them also had a brown tint to them; a vacuum line that is still good will be a dark gray.

    • @riders315
      @riders315 10 років тому

      Ya, i got the 2.7L 4 cylinder. Which vacuum line would you check first or does it really matter?

    • @redonKiLaus
      @redonKiLaus 10 років тому +1

      Check all of the small vacuum lines over on the right-hand side of the engine; there should be a black box that is your EVAP canister, and the lines running to and through it are the ones that could be causing the fuel smell. Since you have a Tacoma, the EVAP canister may be mounted under the bed, though, and if it is, I don't know exactly how the vacuum routing works in that case. You should check all of your vacuum lines though; if you have any that are cracked and causing vacuum leaks, your truck may be running rich, also causing the fuel smell. It is a good idea to replace your vacuum lines every 10 years or so as preventative maintenance. OEM Toyota lines are best, but they are costly (upwards of $50 for one hose, in some cases), so you may want to look into replacing your vacuum lines with silicone. I recommend the shop kit from SiliconeIntakes if you go that route.
