Seeing you estimate how long take nails to grow on your videos has made me realise that my nails grow incredibly fast! I used to hate them so much before finding your videos because I thought they were ugly and weak but now I see I am actually pretty lucky with my nails ❤ I keep seeing your video about filing wide shaped nails to improve their shape now and I am struggling, but it feels like I am getting better every time I try
I tried doing my own gel nails at home inspired by other youtubers on here. After a few months I started getting a burning feeling and ended up find your channel (for answers) and completely stopped with gel nails. I had no idea how serious gel was when I started. Luckily, I knew myself and would never be able to 100% not get gel on my skin. So I sold my gel kit, got a quick dry top coat and followed your tips to nail health!
@alexat6641 I want to do my own nails and feel like I won't be able to paint without getting gel on my skin. So I decided to make my own press ons with gel polish. I wear gloves while painting to limit contact.
The information about how the lamps can differ and perhaps not sufficiently cure various products was incredibly valuable information THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Agree -- so helpful! Wouldn't it be nice if everyone became educated on the safest/best practices BEFORE we had such easy access to DIY gel online, or all the vendors tell you how to properly use their product and actually tell you what is on their peoduct? Thank you, Anna, for the education.
The client has lovely, youthful looking hands. I hope her nails grow out healthy and fully recover soon. I think her natural nails will be gorgeous when they grow out, especially if she continues regular routine nail care per Anna’s advice.
wow this one little video was more informative than my entire time at my nail program. and that’s also part of the problem, our education is so minimal i feel
I did this to my nails. I ended up buying good full nail tips and design my own press ons. I use air dry glue only. That was 2 years ago. My nails beds and nails are so healthy now. My press ons stay on 3 weeks and I actually save most of them and re wear them. Everybody thinks they are acrylic nails. I’ve got my daughters doing the same. We use gel for the nail full tips only not directly on our nail beds. My daughter had chemo and this is the only nail enhancements recommended. Air dry nail glue only.
My nails have the same problem. I've been cutting them even lower off of the nail bed than she. My problem came from changing lamps, and from my excitement I cured every layer twice. I did my thumbs separately with a single nail lamp and they are fine, so I know that it's not an allergy. They've been healing for a month and a half and are still pealing off of the nail beds on most of the nails. I'm trying not to cut them off anymore because I want them to look at least somewhat decent for Christmas. I'm so sad that I can't have beautiful Christmas nails. I would at least be able to leave the house without total embarrassment. Thanks for bringing up the lamps. I haven't seen anyone else mention it. Merry Christmas 🎄
You have helped me so much with your videos. I had damage from many years of dip. I’ve followed your program and after 5 weeks they are looking better. Still extremely short but looking better and feeling better. It is hard not having beautiful nails like with dip but never again!! I now understand it is a slow process till they are healed and strong. ❤
Im so glad you posted this vid! I am a diy gel nail person and when i took off my gel nails, my natural nails are a mess!...they are uneven and very short!
God bless you for sharing your knowledge online! I had no idea nail health was even a thing. Never had a manicure in my life. Inherited Mom’s hideous paper-thin flattish spoon like nails. What brought me here is I had this similar reaction to nail hardener. I took it off and immediately could see my nail plate lifting off. Now I have onycholysis on my middle, ring, and pinky fingers on both hands! It’s hideous and embarrassing and really difficult to get tasks done while trying to keep my fingertips curled under so no one sees and goes “Oh my gosh, what happened??”. Anyway, I’m binge watching your videos and have learned so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
I stopped getting gel manicures due to it jept peeling off. Discovered my natural nails were being over filed with efile as well as the salon has bought their lamps on Amazon. Best decision I have made, with your advice and kit, my nail damage is almost grown out.
It’s interesting that you said the nail that has had onycholysis might never be the same. I am prone to getting it especially on my left ring finger! I have no evidence that I’m allergic to nail products but I do know that one has been over filed in the past and it seems to happen on that one most. The separation always grows out on me and all my nails return to normal health so I don’t mind giving them long breaks from product. I’m a nail tech now who has learned a lot from this channel! So I do my own and since they are thin naturally I just try to baby them and listen when they need a break. So my situation is different in some ways but maybe someone might find it helpful
I don’t have any of the nail problems described in your videos and my natural nails are extraordinarily long but I just enjoy watching because I love all things nails. 😊 I was going to order a nail kit from you to support your store, but I live in Ontario, Canada and we have a mail strike right now with Canada Post. So I’m thinking I will wait until the new year to place an order from you, when hopefully the strike is over. Anyway, thank you for all the time, effort and care you put into these videos to help people with problem nails. I especially enjoy seeing the improvements, when people start taking better care of themselves. Very satisfying. I also enjoy watching the manicures. Oh, and I thought of something else… I seem to recall hearing in one of your videos last night, that you like to keep your nails short because you’re afraid of scratching your clients. At least that’s what I thought you’d said. What about the possibility of keeping your nails as long as you want and wearing cotton or latex gloves when working with your clients…which would surely prevent any scratching? Just a thought I had. 🤔 Maybe you just like them short regardless.
Hello there :)) Thank you so much for writing :) Unfortunately with the strike like you mentioned we paused shipping to Canada. Shipping with FexEx or UPS is possible but you end up paying admin custom fees on top of HST. In regards to the length of nails I find having them short is very comfortable and I love the look. @TheSalonLife yes nails can be beautiful, long or short. ♥️ I will wait until the mail strike is over and then I will place an order with you. Hopefully in the new year or sooner. Merry Christmas! 🎄
I had a nail fungus on 2 nails, the fungus is now gone, nails cut back as recommended. Is your advice for gel allergy reactions also good for growing out my nails?
I feel for this person!! I damaged my nails this way doing gel at home. Following Anna’s advice, I kept my free edges filed short and did oil soaks. Always had very long nail beds, to my fingertips, and this was a difficult and painful 7-8 month healing process. Now my nails are much more healthy, and I get beautiful results keeping them protected with Dazzle Dry polish system. I also use Dazzle Dry base and top coats with Mooncat fancy polishes, and I have very short but strong nails I love to see looking beautiful again.
OMG! I just ordered a soft nail extensions + gel polish kit with the lamps and now regret it. I guess I will just do my nails once or twice a year for special occasions. Otherwise it doesnt look safe at all... Jee. You know what, im gonna just sell it all as soon as I receive my order. My nails might not be the greatest but at east they are healthy now. Gosh. Thanks for the info! Subcribed.
Could you please also make a video on a regular nail polish allergy? How can you develop it? I haven't heard about it before😮 And thank you for your videos! They're really helpful😊🙏🏻
Acrylate in a polish is different. I know that's confusing but it's a polymer, so already cured. That is like you can't be allergic to an acrylic powder but the liquid. Acrylates copolymer is a white powder or beads that forms a pliable covering on skin when dried, improving water-resistance and softness. It is safe for use in cosmetics and has various functions in hair care, nail care, and makeup products.
Anna what do you think we should do regarding the DIY gel manicures epidemic? Telling people the dangers of gel and not to do it themselves is simply not enough. Do you think it is possible to educate these DIY-ers how to MINIMIZE allergy risk and potentially do their gel manicures at home in a more safe manner? This is in regards to those who havent had an allergic reaction yet. Of course in a perfect world only professionals would have access to gel products.
The problem with this issue is BOTH lack of knowledge, lack of practice AND highly allergenic products. I think ccommon sense is needed and critical thinking is needed. We have access to anything nowdays. I have access to needles, but that doesn't mean that I should start injecting myself with stuff found on Alibaba. Also in order to minimize the risk you need a lot of skill. When you learn as a professional you get a lot of practice and at first you do damage a lot of nails. At first people usually practice on themselves. First a professional should learn how to apply a traditional polish flawlessly. This takes a lot of time and an average DIYer is not going to do that and they won't have time for that. So it's like me who will apply a semipermanent hair color on my own hair but I will leave a Balayage to a professional.
I developed onycholysis about this time last year from OPI Repair Mode, it eventually manifested in all of my nails and looked just like the pictures in this video. I followed your advice (longtime viewer, though I had a different account) of clipping them down and keeping them clipped until they grow out and it seems like it took forever but it did eventually grow out. My pinky and ring fingers also had the worst amount, so weird! The weird part is it looks like the Repair Mode caused the soft tissue under the nail to harden completely and that's why it separated. When I was clipping back new growth it was like I was clipping off two thick layers of nail that were completely separated from each other, it was horrifying and fascinating at the same time. I feel like this is what keratin is supposed to do, so I decided to back away slowly from this product. Have you encountered others who have had issues with this? I feel like maybe OPI should know about this.
I guess I'm not allergic. No reactions to all my dental work and the repairs I had to do on cracked nails hasn't bothered me. A new chemical at work created damage to my nails. I use thin coats of gel and cure longer to make certain the gel is fully cured. Uncured gel is more likely to cause allergies. I'm steering clear of deep colored polygel products to avoid under cured gel. Light doesn't penetrate darker colors well. Same goes for very dark polish. Thin coats.
I also have thin nail with ridges and experience lifting on my ring finger and pinky finger. I have wondered why those two nails lift more and my best guess is blood circulation is less on those two fingers. In my case I’m a hair stylist who experiences numbness in my arms and down to my pinky fingers, so I’m just connecting the dots. I also do like to sleep on my side so maybe that’s restricting blood flow.
@@altheajohnstone2695 You should see if you can get assessed for nerves being pinched somewhere in your shoulders under or chest area. Numbness that affects the pinky and ring finger can stem from the joints and nerves in the shoulder and what I call the side of the upper body. I am no doctor and don't know the Latin names. But it can be prevented. Nerve damage can become permanent if not corrected :(
Anna I have to ask a question about something you mention in the video about avoid water. I've seen mention on nail subs in Reddit, etc where people will wear gloves to avoid water even when showering. So they pretty much avoid water 24/7. Is this also something you'd advised? I feel like it's excessive and a bit ridiculous to be wearing gloves when showering or washing your hair. I've had people yell at me and tell me it works and I'm dumb for not following this advice. What do you suggest?
The thing is that hands sweat with gloves on. At least mine do. So they protect the hands from harsh chemicals (like when you are scrubbing your tub etc) but not from water. I also do find it super excessive. Our nails naturally have a protective layer. The problem is that when people buff that layer off, wear polish constantly which adds to the damage then they blame the water for the damage. Keep buffing to a minimum, rethink a constant polish wear and you won't have to shower with gloves on :)
My nails grow faster when I take chewable biotin (and slightly stronger). This helps the damage grow out faster. I have had thin nails all my life, and they tend to catch and tear at my job (manual labor) ☹️
Sadly, I have developed an allergic reaction to gel products. Just like this lady, my ring finger and little finger have the worst damage/lifting. If I use gel I get intense itching and swelling around the base of the nails within just a few hours so have had to stop using these products altogether. Nails have always been my passion and I loved having pretty nails (I found that doing my nails was very therapeutic). Im now following Anna's advice by doing warm oil soaks and trying to properly care for my nails. I was just wondering whether Dazzle Dry would be ok to use? I have to have some hope of having pretty nails again 😊 🙏
The sad thing is that there is no way of telling you if you won’t be allergic to Dazzle Dry. People can be allergic to anything nowadays. Nail polishes are less allergenic than gel polishes though.
@@DebraLD Omg, I thought I was the only one allergic to gel polish. My fingers itch like crazy and I will get a horrific excema rash. In fact, the itching has woken me out of a sound sleep. I can get away with gel in the summer up until about October, then I should give them up.
Hi Anna! Thank you so much for all the valuable information that you always give us! You mentioned keeping the nails dry, but what if we have hyperhidrosis? I'm very self-conscious about my clammy hands and the times I went to a salon, I always got very self-conscious about grossing out the manicurists. What do you think? In your personal experience, have you worked with clients with my condition? Thanks :)
@@TheSalonLife Sometimes they separate on the tips when I remove gel nailpolish but otherwise they don’t. Also, I’ve been using jojoba oil for months and they got so much longer and stronger! They’re not as bendy as they used to be.
My nails were very damaged and they were painful. I put press on nails on and it really helped them being covered. I removed them three weeks later and my nails grew out much better.
I watched your previous videos. I have a new dazzle dry polish. I have tried to clean the stem as you’ve shown. The stem has almost dried nail polish on it now do when i clean it each time it sticks almost. Are there any solutions
Hi Anna, one question I've had and haven't seen answered anywhere is whether press on nails can be a good alternative to any kind of polish. I seem to have developed an allergy to every kind of polish, even regular, and wanted to know if the glues in press on nails have different ingredients from polish and therefore would not cause a reaction. Thanks!
Nail Glue is cyanoacrylate based so if you are allergic to acrylates than you definately react to glue as well. Do you know exactly what ingredients you are allergic to?
@@TheSalonLife No, have been experimenting with regular and Dazzle Dry. I tried when my nail beds were still in poor shape from gel and I felt tingling and itching. I've healed up well now, so I guess I might try Dazzle Dry on one finger and leave it there for a few days to see what affect it has.
Thank you so much for your videos! my nails significantly got better since i staretd to watch you, but by nature they are very soft ( i did your test an apply hardener from Mavala you recommended). But they get nicer and harder if I apply essence base coat you mentioned. I was wondering if it still makes sense to keep on oiling them over the nail polish... or just only keep them naked to use oil and hardner....
I damaged my 2 pinky nails not by allergic reactions or improper removal/application, but by having artificially hard nails that didn’t flex like my real nails. My nails are naturally thin and very flexible but when I have hard gel or acrylics the foundation (my natural nail) is not strong enough to withstand the pressure coming from the tip of the nail so they lifted. I can pin point the moment it happened because it really hurt and felt bruised afterwards.
These products do not recover anything. Polish is polish. I don't recommend any polish for nails like this because 1) it raises moisture level in the nails which makes it prone to bacterial infections. 2) nail polish can add to irritation. Nail polish can cause oxidative damage. Let's let the skin heal. The fact that it includes some nice sounding ingredients doesn't make it any better. Any coating can add to the damage. Nail polish is a decoration for healthy nails. www.researchgate.net/publication/336239119_Keratin_oxidation_carbonylation_as_an_early_marker_of_nail_plate_damage
Absolutely not. These products are NOT designed for skin contact and they develop precisely because of skin contact. When they do tests in the doctors office they test single ingredients too so that you can’t find out which ingredient you are allergic to
@@silverkitty2503 No you should absolutely never ever get gel on your skin, even if you were to try and do your own patch test. Any amount of uncured gel product on your skin, even a drop, and letting it sit there is extremely dangerous. Like Anna said, when a dermatologist does a Methacrylate Patch test it is very different as they are testing singular isolated ingredients. Which is not the same as dabbing uncured gel on your skin and letting it sit there.

@@donnadrane4977 I literally had to get up at 2am to remove my gel polish as the intense itching was so bad and had woken me up 😢
Anna, sorry don't mean to nitpick, but you have a typo in the title. "Naul" should be Nail. Thanks!
No! Thank you so much for pointing this out!! Corrected :))
At least you were sweet about it, not a troll ❤❤
Thanks :)
Hello :) Do you have separated nails (onycholysis)?
@@TheSalonLife Sometimes they separate on the tips when I remove gel nailpolish but otherwise they don’t. Also, I’ve been using jojoba oil for months and they got so much longer and stronger! They’re not as bendy as they used to be.
We have to also understand that some people are on medications that could also cause this and more . ❤
Yes. I talk about it here:

Can you please link the video about jojoba?

Would it be ok for this person who has the damage to wear PressOns?
I got something like this from presson, I think it was the glue
I damaged my 2 pinky nails not by allergic reactions or improper removal/application, but by having artificially hard nails that didn’t flex like my real nails.
My nails are naturally thin and very flexible but when I have hard gel or acrylics the foundation (my natural nail) is not strong enough to withstand the pressure coming from the tip of the nail so they lifted.
I can pin point the moment it happened because it really hurt and felt bruised afterwards.
I've had a similar experience with press ons. I try to not use nail glue now and only the tabs
What are your thoughts on the NailTek Recovery kit the orange kit
These products do not recover anything. Polish is polish. I don't recommend any polish for nails like this because 1) it raises moisture level in the nails which makes it prone to bacterial infections. 2) nail polish can add to irritation. Nail polish can cause oxidative damage. Let's let the skin heal. The fact that it includes some nice sounding ingredients doesn't make it any better. Any coating can add to the damage.
Nail polish is a decoration for healthy nails.

Poor girl those fingernails are trying to play Tetris :(
Now I have the "Type B" theme music from Tetris (NES version) stuck in my head. - MSL

You can ee that here nail beds are burned at the free-edge indicating damage. This could be the cause of her Onycholisis.
This is not necesserly a burn. The nail bed always looks like this when the nail is cut out.
I have the same lifting on my big toes but don’t wear Gel on them. I wi def what causes it?

@ thank you so much!! That video was sad o informative as they all are!!!
❤❤❤
OMG, that looks so very painful!!!😮
🙂
I think we should encourage people to patch test for gel a little on the wrist or something .. for 48 hrs.. so we can see reactions to the product.
