  • 1 part vinegar + 1 part water + a good scrub down = no sanding prior to painting cabinets.

    Just so you know, I am an experienced DIYer and I always do a lot of research especially when doing something new. For the record, this house has been a rental and the finish has held up great for over 3 years. I have done everything from electrical to appliance repair, Sheetrock, trim work, etc. It's not amateur hour over here. It may not be your preferred method, but it works great for me. Just because you have your way doesn't mean it's the only way. And women are capable at home improvement too... Just ask my husband.

      +designed2nines i have been a painter for 20 years and also own a paint store,, always always sand, never rely on tsp as a deglosser or vinger ..and always use a oil base primer over the poly thats on cabinets, then you top coat

      +wolf360090 I'm working on a kitchen that has varnished plywood cabinets and the owner wants me to paint over them. (I was contemplating using a deglosser, but I'm not sure what kind of finish is on the wood... The cabinets were made in the 1940's with the house.) I rubbed acetone where the wear spots were on the cabinets and the surface became tacky and rubbery, and it removed the dark grime from where the handles used to be... I don't think I want to do a full fledged strip... Can I just rough up the surface with a palm sander then hit it with some Kilz oil primer? ALSO, what do you use to fix the dings and 70+ years of wear? Sanding, plaster patch?

    • @wolf360090
      @wolf360090 8 років тому +5

      give a sand to them then your oil primer..after the oil primer has dried, use dry dex to fix the imperfections, it dries quick and easy to sand,,,touch that up with primer, then give whole thing a light sanding , then top coat..when you sand the varnish you dont have to take it all the way down, just enough to take the gloss off of it,,,do not use plaster on the cabinets, when the wood expands it will crack it..

    • @wolf360090
      @wolf360090 8 років тому +2

      +Derek Miller when u did that with the acetone,did the finish itself become tacky or just where the grime and worn off was,, acetone will effect water based products and not oil based products.but regard less on cabinets i would use an oil primer anyways,

      I was over there today, and the finish is old enough that my palm sander strips it to bare wood quicker than I could apply a stripper... I think it was a water based varnish of some sort. I am sticking with oil based paints/primer for the cabinets and the walls... Thanks for the response!

    If you want to avoid sanding before painting use GRIPPER primer, BIN 123 bonding Primer for ALL surfaces or paint your furniture/cabinets w/CHALK paint... commercial OR home made. Actually you can use a liquid deglosser/cleaner which is what I did for mine. It was super simple and got all the years of built up crud off of them and out of the moulding. Thing is...if you have old cabinet and the finish is worn or flaking or the grain is raised...you're going to have to sand no matter what.

    • @vegasjill21
      @vegasjill21 10 років тому

      Yes... you will. And if your cabinets are not washed down with something like tsp to get the grease and grime off you are going to have a hard time getting the primer to stick. AND if the cabinets have any varnish...UGG..like you said..>...you are gonna have to sand them anyways~

    • @jaxgal618
      @jaxgal618 10 років тому +2

      Not true....Bin 123 Primer is made to stick to glossy surfaces with no sanding same with any bonding primer and chalk paint will stick to ANY surface...dull, shiny, glass, plastic, wood, metal. It only has to be CLEAN.

    TSP is not full of chem and not dangerous. It is used and the weapon of choice for cleaning well and surfaces before paining. The bad press on TSP came when the sale of it was outlawed, but the reason was that is promotes plant growth( was used as fertilizer for years). I mean a lot LOL so much so the when it found it's way into water it promoted the grow of algae which was a problem in lakes and other bodies of water. I'm sorry they told you that but I'm glad you got the job done. Be well.

    If people are planning on using this vinegar solution to clean their cabinets, I would suggest using a 'scuff pad' instead of just a plain rag to clean them with. The surface not only has to be clean, but the gloss of the poly finish needs to be dulled too. A shiny finish is a slick finish and a slick finish simply will not accept stain or paint properly.

    • @pbaylis1
      @pbaylis1 6 років тому +1

      This is very good advice. At least use a scuff pad to provide the mechanical key. This will cover those poor unsuspecting ladies who try this method on wood that is newer and glossier.

    glad this method worked for you. I will add for those who prefer sanding, use 150-220 grit and only sand as if you are wiping down counter, don't over sand. this is also less work to do than typical sanding. all you're doing is creating a little grip. done. gret video!

    When I painted my kitchen cabinets, I did tons of research, talk to every one on FB painting pages, prepared myself for the perfect prep work... I washed, sanded like lunatic, primed and used best suggested Advanced paint by Sw that cost a fortune, gae it two coats in spite of promised one-coat covering (I did blue color over white primer).... and it did not turn out as great. Next time I am doing cabinet - I am using DIY paint no prep no sanding nothing, paint and forget. period. Thanks for the video

    just so you know for future reference, you can use a product called Bin is a shellac base primer that adheres to any glossy surface without sanding and dries withing 30minutes. that vinegar and water doesnt do anything besides removing grease but it doesn't even degloss the finish on those cabinets, pretty sad that even people in the paint stores dont know this, but not surprised most of them have never pick up a brush.

    make sure if u do sand u dont hammer it with a thick grit that scrapes out and leaves lines, less is more - start off with a very high grit # and work your way into what will leave a nice smooth finish with no burn marks in the wood. use a full nice even coat of primer with no railroad trak or holidays and then apply 2 nice full coats the same way - if spraying is an option apply coats that way and sand in between

    I tried a test on a piece of finished wood. I separated into two halves with tape. Left side unsanded, right side lightly sanded. I degreased both halves first. Then, I sanded the right side with UMA XIM bonder/primer. After a week, I did the scratch test with a quarter. The UNSANDED side scratched right off to the finished wood with little effort. The sanded side...like iron. It did not scratch.

    this is a great tip for degreasing - but a light sanding is necessary to 'key' the original surface prior to applying the paint. 'keying' roughs up the surface a little allowing the paint to adhere properly - otherwise you could end up doing the job again in a shorter period of time.

    Tile and ceramic cleaner spray is so much easier, spray on wipe off with cloth or sponge till clean. Then wipe over doors with cloth and warm water to get rid of any excess. Always use a mini sponge roller when applying paints to the doors it gives a much smoother professional look, use a all purpose primer paint for undercoating the door and a satin or gloss paint to finish the door. Satin will give a matt finish while gloss will give a shine finish which is your choice..

      Carlos Enriquez if you used acetone to remove all that grease I dont know why you had to bother sanding the cabinets, that damn acetone should have been more than enough to bite on that poly. next time use a degreaser for grease not acetone unless you're trying to die lol. unnecessary!

    you can use any type of cleaner..degreaser,some dawn dish soap,etc..as long as you get the grime and grease off thats all that matters. Sanding isnt always a must.I would say though, take off doors and drawers it makes it a LOT easier.

    • @AN-kg4ei
      @AN-kg4ei 6 років тому

      mikieson The only issue being that the water in the wood fibers will raise the grain a little and all the methods above will do an excellent job cleaning without adding any tooth to the poly/lacquer layer. You may see the paint let go sooner than later unless you scratch or remove the topcoat. I swear by Dawn and/or TSP/vinegar as a primary cleaner though.

    It would be nice if your videos included a before and after with detail. There are so many comments saying that this isn't an effective way to paint your cabinets because the paint won't bind properly. Vinegar and water is just DIY cleaner, not a finish stripping agent. You're more or less taking dirt and grim build-up off the cabinets, but not taking off the finish that prevents the paint from sticking properly. With all the scrubbing you'd have to do with that to get the finish off, it would be way less of a hassle to just sand it. What people don't understand about DIYs is that it's not intended to be someone giving a faulty, short-cut way of doing something. It's supposed to be an instructional on how to "Do It Yourself" so you don't have to pay for labor.
    If this trick actually worked better than what the pros are saying, then you should show proof of it. Next time you visit the house, make another video of the work you did with the cabinets and put it to the test. Scrape it with your nail to ensure the paint is sticking. Open and close them to show that the paint isn't tacky. If you're going to make tutorials/DIY videos, then do them right! Don't exclaim that you can do all of this home improvement stuff yourself and get it right when you don't have proof of that. You can't get mad at people saying you're doing it wrong if you're not proving you did it right in the first place.

    I want to paint MY cabinets because I do not care for them. I don't like oak cabinets but our cabinets are SO dark they fade into the flooring. Our kitchen flooring is VERY dark cherry oak and it runs into the cabinets so the cabinets don't stand out they blend. The builder even put dark granite counter tops. I hate it! I want to paint them a off white and antique them. This would make it more noticeable.

    You can use a dollar-store degreaser (LA's Totally Awesome or Mean Green) and eraser cleaner (generic Magic Eraser) for cleaning. But a good scrub down is not a substitute for sanding. Wiping with a cloth or sponge doesn't take the gloss off, which is what sanding does. This video is what happens when a non-expert gives advice on what she knows nothing about.

    Thats all? what about that varnish or polyurethane on the cabinets, you think your gonna paint right over that without sanding and priming. No No No, you sand, prime and use a good paint and primer in one (Benjamin Moore "Aura") its about $70. a gallon but you only need one gallon. Do it like that or prepare to have to re-do it in a year or two.

    • @diversify210
      @diversify210 9 років тому +4

      +fudgedog Actually there are many deglossers on the market that work just fine for removing the sheen and giving you a nice painted surface over varnish and poly's. With out the headache of sanding. Granted some things just need to be sanding, but for cabinets that are not in serious distress and you simply just want to change the color on them instead of that stained look. Using a good deglosser on them followed with a good clean with some light soapy water. Works great and you don't need to use a $70 per gallon paint to get great results either. You seem like one of those people that like to through away a lot of money and expend a lot of energy on unnecessary things. You definitely would not be in business long. You need to learn the difference between doing a job right with a professional looking finish and just going overboard with unnecessary time and energy. There is a difference between doing a professional job and I prefer using an Alkyd paint on cabinets as it goes on like an oil based paint but cleans up like latex. Behr Alkyd, Valspar Signiture, Behr Premium plus ultra are all paints at about $30 a gallon and yield amazing profession results.

      +Elijah Stephens you are correct in some ways,,but a $30 gallon of paint is just that a $30 gallon of paint and the results do not compare to the results you get from using aura or advance from ben more..yes there are some good deglossers just not TSP or vinegar. and using an alkyd over a poly or varnished cabinets is a bad idea, use an oil primer first the you alkyd or laytex paint.the advacne paint is $70 a gallon but i have done 3 kitchens with a gallon of it so it goes a lot farther.i have people all the time who have used just the alkyd over their cabinets having me fix their mistakes.if you want to repaint you cabinets every other year then use a cheap paint like behr, if you want then to last for many years with a very durable finish then use a high end paint and you will use alot less of the paint..a $20 quart of advance will go just as far as a $30 gallon of behr crap...and if you do not believe me. just type in behr paint problems, look at the millions hits that come up, the type benjamin moore paint problem, you will get one or 2 and 2 that will come up is because they did not prepare the surface properly.like putting it right over a poly surface with out using an oil primer

      I agree that not all paints are created equal. Myself personally I prefer Valspar Signiture over the Behr Premium Plus Ultra. I have used a lot of different paint brands from crappy glidden to ben moore and in all types, latex, oil based, acrylic, alkyd, milk paint, and they all have their different qualities and applications. They all also have there good and bad. Some people think you have to spend an arm and a leg to get great results and I have found in my years of woodworking it is just not necessary. Price does play a big factor in quality, but experience with a certain finish in a certain brand plays a big part as well. I like valspar paint much better but the simply fact is I have more experience with behr paints, because home depot is where I usually go for my needs and I like to one stop shop so I usually end up buying behr paint. I got great results out of their alkyd paint on my laundry room cabinets. I knocked down the sheen with deglosser. Primed them with Kilz premium and painted them with behr Alkyd. Professional looking results for 32 bucks a gallon. Now I will say that I do have I Fuji Mini Mite 3, so I spray most of my work, which tends to yield much better results than brushing or rolling. A 1.8 or 2.0 nozzle to spray the primer and paint. Where I tend to splurge a little is on the Top coat. I love General Finishes High Performance Poly. More expensive but well worth it and I spray that on as well with the miti mite and a 1.0 or 1.3 nozzle depending on the coverage. All and all you just dont always have to empty your pockets to get great results.
      Oh and one more thing I wanted to add. I know this is already a long comment, but I couldn't leave without saying it. A lot of cabinets these days you would be better off never touching the things with any kind of abrasive, because of the really thin veneers they use on cheaper cabinets Especially the recessed panels. You start sanding away at that thing and you may end up sanding through the veneer then you just ruined your cabinet door. Now more expensive solid hardwood cabinets no worries, but for the cheaper stuff which most homes 30 years old or newer have in them. You would be safer going the rout of the deglosser. I have also had great results using Zinsser BIN shellac primer over high gloss finishes then painting over that. Zinsser BIN is getting up in that expensive category though.

      I like your comments on the cabinets...mine are 12 yrs old, blonde finish, faded and worn at the corners, I used mimwax brushed on, helped with some restoration of the shine, I did not use the paste wax as instructed when the mimwax stain finished dried, I do not like it! so I want to paint them now, will I need to sand them off? they are shinier then before application. we have the paint pot spray gun & compressor, just want to make sure that I need to sand, I know vinegar and water clean only, it does not remove old varnish etc.

    Let the professional painters paint the cabinets and the professional drivers do the driving-most of you should probably park your car..! I see we have a wealth of perverts here as usual and some self proclaimed chemists as well. Simply put, none of you know what is on those cabinets or what is being removed. There is no way to truly diagnose what will work and what doesn't. Vinegar is and does clean many things and mixed with other simple chemicals can do more. It is used commonly to clean grease and oil from stainless steel it can also be used in metal etching processes. It cleans up jewelry and coins as well. It works well as a cleaner especially if it is warmed to about 140 degrees. If you are going to sand these cabinets-which is recommended, use a 320-400 grit sandpaper after cleaning and then clean again, and then primer and paint.

    These cabinets look like oak in pristine condition and you're going to slobber paint on them? I can't watch. I'm all for painted wood, but only when the beauty of wood is beyond salvation.

      Valkyrie Sardo Seen too many shows where good cabs are ripped out for new ones Painting them instead is a good way to get the desired new look one wants without the expense. I completely agree on painting the Oak what ever condition. It is sort of like buying a new purse for ladies when the old one still good.but just want a change. .

      Valkyrie Sardo Maybe but they do look dated. I have similar oak cabinets and I painted them all. Best thing I ever done. It's brighter fresher and looks like a brand new kitchen. Im very pleased!
