Can Rear Subframe Bushes finally fix our 152,000 mile E92 M3?

  • Having chased all the simple options for curing the handling problems on our high mileage E92 M3 there was only one thing left... To bite the bullet and drop the rear subframe!
There are 4 main bushes that link the rear subframe to the body of the car, and they do slowly get softer over time. Could this be what was making the handling of our car so poor? Only one way to find out.

Great video that shows the realities of mileage and importantly time. The question of whether or not it’s worth it may depend on the spec or color combo. As time goes on and these become less numerous, the answer may change.

I own a BMW e92 M3 and truly enjoy it. The up keep maintenance to keep them running and handling like new can be financially overwhelming to some. If you are fortunate to find one for a great price and plan to keep it and enjoy it I would still say yes to the project. The sound and performance you get still puts a smile to my face.

@@ozhoneybadger only normal oil changes, differential change, power steering oil, transmission oil change. All done in my garage so just parts. Now I will be doing my Rod bearings at 100k miles more for piece of mind. That will be a out of pocket expense of 2500.00 in California . So at that point I will replace my motor mounts . No issues with throttle actuators or oil leaks so far at 92k miles. Unfortunately my 335is is a different story. I’ve replaced almost every gasket possible and turbos, water pump/ thermostat, injectors/coils, boost actuators. However now that I’ve replaced all of these parts it’s as amazing to drive as my M3.

I did something similar with a Chevrolet 1979 Caprice Classic, replaced all the trailing arms in the rear (4 pieces) all double wishbones in the front (4 pieces) all springs and shocks too. I can feel your excitement in the video, when driving the car after the fix! (the parts cost me 1400 Euro shipped from USA, did the fix myself)
My car obviously had never been touched tho nothing was loose the rubber was like 40 years old and full of big horizontal cracks so loose under pressure but not loose enough during an MOT or inspection to warrant change.
All in all it was not worth it, but to me it was. Nothing beats driving a "brand new" 40 year old car for under 1500 euros! (and a weekend of elbow grease) :)
The engine is a 350 or 5.7L V8 with only 300hp but it rides good.

The rear wheel bearing are pressed out and pressed in, so it is easier to do this off the subframe/car.
Also, if you want to change the rear sway bar or even refresh the rubber bushings, you have to drop the subframe.
The two piece driveshaft develops a clunk, so change the front Guibo, Center Bearing, and rear CV Joint, plus all the bolts.
In the US, you can get a remanufactured drive shaft with a serviceable U-Joint. The BMW OEM Driveshaft isn't serviceable.
Adding stainless steel brake lines is recommended. Better brake pads is also advisable.

It wouldn't cost too much to clean and put a spray on underseal surely? And it would be alot cheaper than cutting out and rewelding the boot floor as a bit of preventative maintenance was done? Would be 2-3 days of work to do properly and something we are not at all equipped to do.

Maybe for the purposes of this series, stripping and coating the underside of the car would have been cost prohibiitive, but since rust is what is most likely end this cars life for good, I would have sorted out all of the corrosion underneath, that way in many ways it would be better than a much lower mileage car - which could even be well on its way to this condition anyway. The rest of the car might be good for another 10-15 years at this point, but any kind of regular winter use might see you back underneath again before long having to make more structural repairs.

To remember what has had its final torque process done. Helpful when carrying out a larger job with many processes.
It can also be a marker to see if things have shifted in the future.

I don’t think it matters how much it cost to restore an older car nowadays because the newer cars have so many computers and then in the future batteries so it is worth it no matter the cost just restore the BMW one series for my daughter probably could’ve bought a new car for her didn’t care it was an 09 with a six speed totally worth it

The newer cars are very fast but they seem to lack the character of the older models. If you end up spending 60k including the cost of the car and you have something you love you’re ahead VS spending 100k on something new.
