To answer the question of whether or not this was/is an effective piece of art is personal. For me the answer is no. Without the full explanation/history lesson I could not determine what this painting was about. For me, one of the uninitiated this painting was a failure.
True, but a lot of sources state that he had no idea what to do for the commission. When the bombing of Guernica happened, however, he was inspired by the event to paint this picture. You and the person narrating the analysis are both correct.

If you lived during that time in Spain you would have no problem on getting the message, when you are not living it nothing makes sense.
He was commissioned, not inspired.

@@afields I just read that he was commissioned and was actually working on another piece and scrapped it after the bombing and painted this one.
