I do love how all of the kids except Shoya and Shoko are voiced by kids which to me is realistic. Also is it just me or does the teachers voice sound very similar to Guts from The Berserk series?
Well, that's Marc Diraison so yeah it is him. Also, there's other some amines that all the kids are voiced actual children even before this film existed.
As someone who knows a decent amount of japanese, "Holy Crap" is actually a more better translation than "weird". The translation you got on a pirated website just wanted to use a more tame word to try to cross the same meaning of being shocked since he was a child.

Doesn’t excuse what he did… but I think as a child he had interest and a crush on her. Just didn’t know it and didn’t like it.

The manga emphasizes how as a child Shouya was always trying to ward off boredom, and he did this by getting into more and more trouble. It also emphasizes his love of video games. When he sees Shouko for the first time and learns she's deaf, he sees her as the final boss in his game against boredom, and he decides that he's going to bully her for his entertainment. Eventually he comes to regret using her for that sort of thing.

I could be wrong, but this is how I view it.
To me it just seems like Shoya is viewing Shoko as one big target...or "Boss Level".
I think it’s the fact that Shoko is the boss thing because he thinks it’s weird like the boss looks weird and so is Shoko for being deaf.
In the manga, Shoya mentions that he sees Shouko as an alien from outer space. So this could be the movies way of saying this.
