this, although I am definitely warming to trends vids as a cautionary tale. If it's trendy now, it will be *dated* in five years' time. Do I really love it enough to be okay with that?
I have a large bow window in my bedroom upstairs and I’ve had an indoor swing on each side of the window for the last fifteen years. They’re made of bent wicker and canopy shaped and I find it very relaxing to sit in either them and read a book depending on which one is getting sunlight from behind.
I changed the dining room lights to all matching 27000. My adult son walked into the house and said, "what did you do? It feels so calm in here. " Thanks, Nick!
Hahaha, love this video! Only thing I’d add is that indoor swings are a centuries-old tradition in South Asia (they’re called jhoolas). Adults and children just sit in them, banter, have chai, swaying very very mildly (far from playground style playing). And they’re very ornate and heavy and usually in a covered balcony or porch. They’re awesome!
Is it an indoor swing if it's on a covered balcony or porch? It seems then you have at least one side open to the outdoors. Porch swings are popular in hot places to avoid the stifling indoors until it cools down at night.

It's funny how "vibrant maximalism" sounds so much more sophisticated that "busy clutter" or "clashy gaudy," or even "kindergarten chic"? You can add about a thousand bucks to the price tag of anything that ends with an "ism."
It reminds me of when my son was in daycare and one of his classmates came to school in a green sweater with a pink flower on it, an orange skirt, and red and white striped tights. Her exasperated mother told me her daughter insisted on dressing herself every morning and it wasn't worth fighting over. 'Kindergarten Chic' is the perfect description.
@@kalikeleka Yup, I agree. I think some of these trends come from a lack of education in the arts coupled with a zombie adherence to this silly idea that "all opinions are equally valid" and that "everyone's opinion matters." Add to that the fact that people are mindless sheep looking for acceptance by other mindless sheep and we've entered an aesthetic Dark Ages where a child's smudge d handprint on a piece of paper is "as good" as the Sistine Chapel and "vibrant maximalism" is considered as legitimate as good design. People will rationalize anything.

I had an indoor porch style swing for years hanging on one side of the fireplace, it sat two and had a sheep skin over it. It was always the most used seat in the house when others came over. I loved having a cup of tea and reading a book there. Done right they are neat.
We have an indoor swing! I have 2 sons with autism and it's an amazing tool to regulate the sensory system. They're super calming for everyone else as well. Makes me happy if it truly does become a trend. 😊
Having a swing in a screened-in porch is great! My favorite place to read when the weather permits. The swing is always the first seat taken when people enter the porch.

Thank you, St Nick, for our Christmas gift video. We had a house in the 70s that had an atrium in the center, open through the roof with sliding doors on 3 sides. It had a definite different vibe as a home, in a good way. We did end up screening across the top for bug/critter control (it was Florida).
Nick! So glad to see some modern cottagecore representation…I think? I’m one of the weird gays that fled to the countryside to fix up a hovel and live the agrarian fantasy. Oh my God I wanted an indoor swing so bad when I was a kid! There was this amazing house in our neighborhood that was designed and built by the Swedish father of a girl I knew. It had atrium ceilings and quirky blonde wood nooks and oddly shaped rooms...and a huge indoor swing hanging from the beams in the middle of the house. It was sooo cool.

Oh, Nick. Thank you. You are an absolute treasure. You should be on prescription as a mood-booster. My cheeks are sore laughing about the goats (the cheeks on my face - get your mind out of the gutter). Watching from France.
The very first one lol. My family just put in a slide and a swing in the house and all 5 family members use them (originally put on for our 2 year old, but the high school boys and my husband and I also use them). To be fair, we live in Chicago and it gets COLD and we don’t want to go to the park every day, but that toddler needs a place to play

“Cry for help maximalism” took me out 😂😂😂 As someone who has leaned into modern cottage core, I agree with your opinion. It doesn’t make sense if you live in an urban or suburban area. It is definitely going to be the modern farmhouse of this era. I am one of those people who moved out of their downtown (Dallas) condos and bought a large piece of property in the middle of nowhere so it makes sense for my home. No goats for me though! Just a few quaint chickens and a lot of cottage landscaping. The peace and quiet has forever changed me.
17:20 OMG 😂😂😂😂 I'm laughing my butt off, because I DO live in a suburb of Atlanta. And, coincidentally, a quarter mile from my home was a former GOAT farm until last year when D.R. Horton started building townhomes on those 40 acres! (The last remaining farm in the area)
We bought a stand for my hammock chair intending to put it on the patio. It never quite made it outside, and now it’s one of my favorite living room seating options! 😁
I am an Indian from South of India and it is very traditional to have indoor swings in the living area. I love the intricate design and the vintage look.
I actually moved in 2022 to a former farmhouse :) No goats, but large garden yes, plenty of fruittrees etc. Not quite cottagecore but close enough I guess.
@@Sorrely1 It's amazing! Shops still within cycling distance (Dutch, shopping by bike is normal here) but amazing views all around! And way cheaper than any city.
None of it really sounded "new"; besides, what really works in our homes is what makes us feel happy, cozy and just right for us. Enjoyed your take on it all, though, as always. Merry Christmas!
The indoor swings you showed were abysmal. But my latest visit to home goods has me thinking if they are taking inspiration from South Asian or indian homes. We have indoor swings or egg chair swings. Given that they have now started to carry so much made in India or that SA style of products i think they are definitely taking inspiration from there.
@katescarratt4267 I'm going to try my best to explain this in English. Turn your back towards the egg chair stand like max half feet away or barely touching the chair. Without swinging the chair stretch both arms to the sides vertical ones of the chair. Then keep your main foot planted on ground, but start sitting into the front edge of the chair with your non dominant foot moving towards the chair ie behind half a step. Once you sit on the chair keep the main foot planted on floor but slide in slowly into the chair. Then you can releaase the foot with slight push and use it to swing. I usually like the non dominant foot folded up into the chair and main foot dangling down to push to swing. This has usually worked out for me. But some chairs especially the ones with the stand on floor and a hook to hang them off of are extremely difficult to balance. We usually prefer the ones that are hung directly from ceiling 😅 they have more stability in a way.
This is my Happy New Year video. Nick I needed the giggles. I'm not a trendy person. Give me comfort and livability first but with some semblance of style. I have throughly enjoyed this video. Happy 2025 to you🎉.
Shabby chic -> farmhouse -> modern cottagecore It’s all just new iterations of the same thing and it’s made for people who love cozy. Next up: Little House on the PrairieCore
I know someone with a huge house with hidden secret rooms and spaces behind move-able bookacases. They have a slide in one of those spaces. It's quirky-cool and they installed it 30+ years ago when their kids were young. I love it!
“…I hope you have fun with your goats.” ahaha I’ve watched so much of your content now and I find it so refreshing and incredibly practical so I really appreciate your proficiency, thank you!
I find it ironic watching Nick talking about cottage core and literally driving back from my mother in law's farmstead. The house looks and smells nothing like cottagecore. There's still manure stuck to my boots I think. Furniture is not an eclectic assortment of vintage pieces - it is just old plywood crap from 30-40 years ago with occasional old wooden furniture. And did I mention mice waking you up at night? well, that too.
I guess my dad was ahead of the times. He put a swing in the basement playroom in 1953. I took it down in 2000 when l took over the house. My dad was great!❤
I have a rocking chair that strongly resembles my mother's. I used to spend a lot of time in her chair, and i use mine a lot when I'm reading or watching movies. It allows movement when i *should* be sitting still - turns out I've got adhd and it helps A LOT when I'm antsy.
I agree about curved sofas. You need a large room for them to work. Had a client who bought a curved sofa/sectional and was trying to put it in a long and narrow room. I told her that it wasn't going to work and to send it back. She got a regular sofa and chairs that worked with the room dimensions better. Hard lesson to learn.
17:32 "brown is the new neutral" I see your brown and I raise you a pink! Everyone is so inspired by the 80s lately that I actually predict pink is coming back in a big way. It's not just feminine, which we need in such a harsh time for women's rights, but it's also just a cozy comfortable color and it's gonna look amazing w all this wood everyone loves now
I just got paint for updating my personal bathroom. It's an off-white peachy pink. I couldn't love it more! I'm thinking of doing my currently beige living room in an even more gentle and lighter off-white pinky peach. It just feels warmer and more comforting.
I live in a little residential suburb in California. We grow our food, we have sheep and chickens. My son is a culinary and medicinal mushroom farmer. We spent 2020 feeding our friends and neighbors and bartering our goods with neighbors for materials to build a new barn and corral. Cottagecore really cracks me up!

Yes, at last!
“Hose and Garden”
That’s the best laugh for a merry Happy Holidays
Love your work and witty Vancouverite humour. Have a great 2025
I actually moved in 2022 to a former farmhouse :) No goats, but large garden yes, plenty of fruittrees etc. Not quite cottagecore but close enough I guess.
I’m v envious. Sounds perfect
@@Sorrely1 It's amazing! Shops still within cycling distance (Dutch, shopping by bike is normal here) but amazing views all around! And way cheaper than any city.
Can’t wait for the 2029 trend where it’s ‘big light only’. Kidding but Nick I LOVE ALL OF YOUR THOUGHTS YOU SHARE so funny and smart
Bella Swan would never
Love you're non Saturday uploads but it does throw me a bit 😅😅
Merry Christmas Nick. I like the way, you interacted with people as well 🤭😊 Blessings.
0:51 I had an indoor swing. My Dad installed it and hung it from the ceiling..........when I was 14 years old! 😂
How do you get into those egg chair swings? I tried one in a store once and just went round in circles.
Shabby chic -> farmhouse -> modern cottagecore
It’s all just new iterations of the same thing and it’s made for people who love cozy.
Next up: Little House on the PrairieCore
St Nick! Can’t wait for this one!
Brown does not wear well in the long term. Ever. Ask anyone who was old enough to be aware of home decor in the 1970s.
I had a brown (teen years) bedroom in the 70s. Loved it then, won’t do it again 😅
I know someone with a huge house with hidden secret rooms and spaces behind move-able bookacases. They have a slide in one of those spaces. It's quirky-cool and they installed it 30+ years ago when their kids were young.
I love it!
in india its actually pretty common to have a swing in the house, especially on verandahs and in gardens
My dad was great!❤
You are hilarious Nick! My fav interiors expert and looking great. Merry Christmas all.
I love art deco, such a beautiful design style. Would have my entire house to be designed that way
We're a neuorodiverse family and have had an indoor swing for 20 years. My twins schools always had them in their sensory rooms.
At this point I’m just liking as soon as I see you. Your sass is life.
Merry Xmas Nick!
Or
Happy Holidays Nick!
It's Nickmas eve 😅
@ that’s clever!!! lol
This is only the second video I've watched if Nick. I had to check both times to be sure i didn't have it on 2x speed! Lol. I love you Nick!
Merry Christmas Nick, your videos have helped me so much while designing and decorating my new flat, have a wonderful festive season ❤
Lovely xmas present! Happy christmas Nick & fans of Nick.
Just about to take my kelpie out for his christmas day walk.
I like art deco. Hope you enjoy the holidays.
Oh Nick, “Cry for help maximalism!” 😂😂😂
You’re definitely my favorite person. You say all the things i think in my head
I never, EVER, go down the slide before I’ve had my coffee. 💀
Art Deco really started coming back when the Great Gatsby movie came out!😅
I live in a little residential suburb in California. We grow our food, we have sheep and chickens. My son is a culinary and medicinal mushroom farmer. We spent 2020 feeding our friends and neighbors and bartering our goods with neighbors for materials to build a new barn and corral. Cottagecore really cracks me up!
You are our GOAT, Nick! I hope your holidays have been so fun and 2025 will be inspiring for all of us!
“No one’s curing cancer here” 😂 love your content and wishing you the merriest of holidays and a joyously prosperous new year!🎉
Art deco is amazing and it doesn't seem it will stop resurfacing
Holy cow, the "Do you know what I mean?" drinking game is ON FIRE this episode!!

Still laughing about the Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs- thanks for the late night chuckle 🙏🏼
The indoor swings are such a common phenomenon in traditional Indian homes, I kinda like them :P
