Willem is bigger than the oscars, ive watched many many interviews with him and he never seems jaded or bothered about not receiving an oscar he just truly loves the craft and that is all he cares about
Wished he was nominated for The Lighthouse cause that scene where he is yelling and ranting at Robert’s character for not liking his cooking still lives in my head rent free.
I think Willem Dafoe not only should’ve been nominated for The Lighthouse, he should’ve won. His monologue scene and chilling performance alone should’ve gave him the win. I thought Brad Pitt was awesome in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood but Dafoe gave my favorite supporting actor performance that year. I’m disappointed he didn’t get nominated for Poor Things, would’ve been cool to see him and Ruffalo nominated in Supporting Actor. I thought Sterling K. Brown was great in American Fiction but Dafoe should’ve been nominated. Makes me wonder if the Academy will ever nominate him again.
Very possibly my favorite actor. He just doesn't miss. He should have been nominated and won for The Last Temptation of Christ. Just an absolutely brilliant performance.
For ages, I had this Mandela effect of thinking his name was William Defoe. (Which also had led me to believe he was descendent from Daniel Defoe who wrote "Robinson Crusoe".)
Thank you for great work about a favorite actor. He was frequently on Stage in the 1980s with the Wooster Group. He was also frequently seen about town in Soho. We LOVE HIM in NYC🥰
He's in the Glenn Close group of actors who've been nominated many times but never won. I saw Dafoe in a movie called Tom & Viv years ago and thought he should've won for that. Also, he played a chilling Nosferatu in Shadow of a Vampire where he should've won for that, too. A genuinely great actor getting overlooked when movie stars (not actors) like Clooney and Pitt are awarded.
@georgialerangis2123 Except Cillian Murphy actually has an Oscar. I can't quite believe they don't care about winning. An Oscar is a kudos to any actor's career and adds more money to the movie when it wins. I just don't understand the Academy's thinking when picking winners.
This man has ZERO ego. With his talent and filmography he still does such creative projects despite the name, status, budget, or genre. Man shoukd have like 3 supporting oscars for Platoon, Vampire, and Florida Project
Personally, I will be praying he gets a supporting nomination for Saturday Night. Remember that Oscar wins in this category have gone to many “ blink and you miss it” performances- ( Network 1976, Shakespeare in Love 1998) Willem DESERVES IT❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Dafoe should have been nominated and won for The Lighthouse. Both Pattinson and Dafoe should have been nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Dafoe has always given amazing performances, but The Lighthouse was his best performance IMO. That “Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HARK!!!” monologue alone should have gotten him a nomination and it’s a shame that film was only nominated for Cinematography, which it deserved, but The Lighthouse should have been nominated for more Oscars. Great video Brian, hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
Your Mention of Mark Ruffalo in this makes me hope you'll also be doing an Elusive Oscar video for him as well. I have a massive respect for Ruffalo's work as an Actor and as an activist for good causes.
This was a really interesting video and I think it would be great for the channel to do more of these individual actor videos. I’ve been watching the Oscars since I came of age for it in the late 80s, and if you’d asked me yesterday if he’d ever won an Oscar I probably would’ve guessed yes. In the fog of memory, I think I had a vague idea that he won for Platoon or Last Temptation. Since I’m a geek for this stuff, I love the analysis of each race where he was nominated and the punditry on why he lost and where he may have ranked in the standings. Keep em coming!
One of the few truly beloved actors out there, who seems so grounded and we've never heard anything bad about. Something of an activist IRL but you never hear him shooting his mouth off the way so many big actors do.
He got the title of the most legendary..his nominations are like winning in the eyes of his fans..we all know who wins and why ..not necessarily because of the talent.. sometimes other things get in the way..but this guy should understand that he won people's love and support which is way more important than a piece of metal given to some names with some relationships that interfere with it.. he's the winner indeed..
This was great (I enjoy all your videos)! How about something similar with Harrison Ford ("Working Girl", "The Mosquito Coast", "The Fugitive", other films where he could have conceivably been nominated and won) and
One of the best in the business. I was introduced to him in Platoon and the death scene is indelibly imprinted in my psyche. Off topic but I do hope you'll do a video on Chris Cooper. I am new to your channel so my apologies if I've missed it.
The only thing that disappoints me about the upcoming Nosferatu remake is that he’s not again playing Orlock, but to be fair just having him in the movie at all is pretty awesome.
Incredible video profile on this iconic actor, Brian. I wish he would have gotten in for Poor Things, he was far better than RDJ for me and would have made a better winner. Also would have been worthy of winning for The Lighthouse, The Florida Project, and Shadow Of The Vampire. I'm still surprised he wasn't more competitive in 2018 considering the massive critical praise for The Florida Project and Rockwell swept that easily. Maybe Nosferatu will be a surprise critical smash and he'll get his 5th Oscar nom there. Great video , Brian. ❤
I literally think in a world without genre bias he could have WON for The Lighthouse. I wasn’t even crazy about that movie but my God was that an incredible performance.
Jaws the Revenge is an amazing movie! It's the one I put on when I've had an awful day and want to just order pizza, turn off my phone and just zone out to something so bad it's good.
He is probably the greatest actor living today, but he is such a worker that he just want's to be in good movies, he focuses more on doing a great job in a movie big or small, starring or supporting more than having a strategic carreer of picking specific roles that go according to a brand
I have a question (unrelated to this video, unfortunately): Have you ever spoken on this channel of "House of the Spirits"? with Meryl Streep, including in the series about her or not? and if not, is that a reflection of your opinion of the film or was it just an accident? The film also stars Glen Close, Jeremy Irons, among other big names.....
I wondered what would have happened if they put Berenger in the lead category instead. He does have quite a bit of screen time for a secondary character. Or Michael Caine in the lead category.
One of the most consistently great actors working, even in Speed 2 he brings the villainy. 1986 probably 4th,2000 probably 5th,In 2017 i'd think he was second and he's much better than the overrated Rockwell,I never got that performance and tbh Dafoe did look disappointed when he lost,2018 is the role I think he should have won for definitely over the terrible Malek. He should have been nominated for The Lighthouse even though he's a lead and would have made a very good winner,I was really disappointed when prime ham Ruffalo got the nod for Poor Thing and Dafoe was snubbed for Sterling K Brown who I thought did nothing special in American Fiction which was over the most praised film of last season. Here's hoping he receives a competitive Oscar and not some rubbish honorary thing.
At this point, after watching so many "elusive Oscar" videos, one might ask if the Oscars are really a token of greatness that actors should strive to get one ...
I really enjoy his diversity. He did a film called "The Ref" where hes a cat burglar who takes a very disfunctional family hostage on Christmas eve. Great cast Judy Davis, Keven Spacey, and Glynnis Johns as the pain in the ass mother in law. I still laugh my ass off watching it. But his ability to fall into heavy drama as well as comedy is telling.
OMG I always thought he'd been Oscar nominated for the Last Temptation of Christ. Whoops. Also thought he had at least one award from the other 4 big groups (globes, Bafta, critics choice, sag) . I always enjoy seeing him on things. I believe his day will come eventually
I kinda understand why Willem Dafoe hasn't won one because he is probably too eccentric for the Academy (Thinking it's not a coincidence the performance that broke the drought between 2000 and 2017 was the closest he came to playing an everyman). Though nothing will make me happier than seeing him get the credit he deserves.
Create video Brian! I hope you can do an elusive Oscar video about Greta Gerwig as her career is interesting. Also, why do you think Dafoe was nominated for At Eternity’s Gate over John David Washington and Ethan Hawke?
With the Florida Project Brian Rowe mentioned that it is hard to win an Oscar when you are the only nomination for that film, he should also think about Edward Norton in Primal Fear which he was also the only nomination for that film because he felt he should have won it over Cuba Gooding, Jr. that year who won for Jerry Maguire which was a Best Picture nominee.
The academy is all about looks. They give out acting award to little girls and fresh young actresses, especially if they are attractive. Plain, or even ugly, actors and actresses have an uphill battle for the Oscar.
Let’s stop beating around the bush. Willem Dafoe should have won his Oscar for Speed 2: Cruise Control 🚢 😂😂 No, his three biggest snubs were for Mississippi Burning and The Last Temptation of Christ (both 1988) and The Florida Project.
Honestly, Willem Dafoe, I think it comes down to the fact that he is very melodramatic and, frankly, quite weird. I believe that is probably why most people don't nominate him to win. Dafoe has a very unique and acquired taste. Even Robin Williams had to tone down his ADHD humorous antics before he ever won his first Oscar for Good Will Hunting in the late 90s
Use “last,” not “latter,” every time you refer to the last member of a list of three or more items. “Latter” is like “later” and is appropriate for only the later of a list of just two items.
He didn't deserve it any year. But he doesn't need an Oscar, even if it's always great. He's been always incredible, extraordinary. One of the best actors I've seen. He can be more than proud of his career.
Lots of great actors have never won an Oscar. So…so what? Defoe is just too, well, odd. He’s a great actor but he’s kind of a freak. And really, looks play a part for women and men.
Willem is bigger than the oscars, ive watched many many interviews with him and he never seems jaded or bothered about not receiving an oscar he just truly loves the craft and that is all he cares about

If only The Lighthouse wasn‘t pretentious dreck.
Wiilem Dafoe needs to win an Oscar one of these days. He is one of the best actors around.
Very possibly my favorite actor. He just doesn't miss. He should have been nominated and won for The Last Temptation of Christ. Just an absolutely brilliant performance.
The Florida Project was worthy of so many academy awards nominations!! That movie is an absolute breath of fresh air.
At least he won a Golden Lion for his performance in At Eternity's Gate. Better to win a Volpi Cup than an Oscar. After all, the cup is twice as big.
THANK YOU! I've been waiting for this video ever since I heard of this series of yours. Hopefully Willem wins the Oscar at some point.
Been waiting for this like Wilem’s been waiting for that Oscar
He should’ve got nominations for The Lighthouse, No Way Home & Poor Things
No for no way home
He WILL-em win some day
Dafoe is one of the finest actors working today. That win is going to happen, there is no doubt about it
I met him at a private screening of his Van Gogh movie. He’s a kind and humble man.
I’m shocked he’s only been nominated four times. Although I need to say Rami Malek’s win is aging badly.
For ages, I had this Mandela effect of thinking his name was William Defoe. (Which also had led me to believe he was descendent from Daniel Defoe who wrote "Robinson Crusoe".)

One of my favorite actors... and he once wanted to go out with my mom.
Glenn Close - 8
Amy Adams - 6
Bradely Cooper - 5
Annette Bening & Michelle Williams -5
William Dafoe - 4 , Hope they will win soon 🔥
I hope it will not too late
How did you forget Ruffalo?😂 He has 4 without a win.

Excellent comment. I'd like to throw Tom Cruise in with that lot if you don't mind.
@thruthefirepubl Oh, I agree entirely, although as yet, Tom Cruise hasn't won an Oscar. Only nominated.
A story much repeated in Hollywood history. Honestly, he is a lot like CILLIAN Murphy, he truly does NOT CARE , nor does he need an Oscar❤

Willem Dafoe should definitely have an academy award by now. Great actor liked him in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice among others
He is the most versatile actor ever. I think he is great in Motherless Brooklyn a few years back.
What still amazes me is the pace of his career. This man makes like five movies a year. And he’s rarely a lead, but like, how do you do it?
One of the most underrated actors EVER!! He also doesn’t take himself too seriously like a lot of the phonies who end up winning.
What a great actor, what a great person he seems to be.
A master and lover and the craft.
Congratulations!
