- Military officials around Russia have begun serving call-up papers on men of fighting age, just hours after President Putin announced what he called a 'partial mobilisation' to bolster his forces in Ukraine.

The Kremlin denied reports that people were fleeing the country to avoid being sent to the frontlines - while activists say more than thirteen hundred people have been detained during protests against the draft.

They have already sent a lot of their security force to the front line, aswel as sending more such as police officer's. They also need strong police behind to prepare for the possibility of revolting.
If that's true, it's a really stupid idea, sending men that oppose the war so much they are out on the streets protesting. At best they will just surrender at the earliest opportunity, at worst they will sabotage or defect and fight for Ukraine
True fact, the FSB is larger than the russian army.
If they sent their police forces they wouldn't have any loyal lapdogs to beat dissidents and undesirables into submission.
Imagine being forced to fight in an army you do not wish to join to fight and probably die in a war that is utterly meaningless. This is just disgusting.

I was drafted during the Vietnam war. Being from a poor farmworker parents who did not know English I had no chance of avoiding getting drafted. Ten days after graduating from HS I was in basic training at Fort Ord. Those few weeks before getting drafted was the scariest time in my life. Getting drafted by any military is not fun. I was trained and served as a combat medic. Serendipitously, experience as a medic got me interested in medicine and I eventually become a dentist.

@@everready800 The Azov Battalion at the start was actually just a militia at first who fought back, without Kyiv's approval or help, against the Russians in the Donbas when they invaded in 2014. It was an ultranationalist militia at first yes and there were and still probably are some Neo Nazis in the ranks. I don't agree with it, but Ukraine has made legitimate efforts to get rid of all the Nazis in their ranks since they folded the militia into their Armed Forces. First they kicked loads of known Neo Nazis out and probably loads of Nazis unknown to the general public, but when the actual war started this year they stationed ALL of the Battalion on the frontlines and in Mariupol, where I'm sure most of the former Neo Nazis were wiped out. As heartless as it sounds, who better to man an encircled position like Mariupol and Azovstal than the former Neo Nazi battalion who might still have a few of them left in it?

Sometimes I wonder if this war is all part of the plan of those who pull the strings, in terms of achieving net zero and many other insane goals it all seems too good to be true.
A sincere question: by arming a massive amount of people who don't want - and didn't expect - to be sent to Ukraine (even if it's just 20% of the 300,000, that's still 60,000 people), doesn't a take a significant risk of having some sort of armed rebellion (not necessarily towards the Kremlin but, for example, perhaps against their commanders)?

I have watched a lot of horrible things in the past 7 months. Very little had any empathetic reaction on me from Russian content. But watching that after i put my two sons to bed had a large impact. Trust me we had many many of them till Putin killed them or put in prison. Navalny still in a prison for the last 1.5 year. People living in Moscow are so cynical. They are too scared to join the protesters. People from provinces are so poor that they can not even organize and support each other. They were fighting every day for basic survival. Wealth inequality is massive. People in Moscow live in the first world. People in my city live in the third world. All our money are in offshore tax heavens. The city of London helped Putin's oligarchs to build this terrible regime. Please don't forget about that😥

Она получила почти все места в парламенте, коммунисты, которые почему то к ним лояльны, получили почти ничего. They’ll probably have a rear guard contingent with shoot to kill orders fir deserters .
Problem is if you surrender and ever want to go back to your family or friends they will still arrest you when you return
And then go to jail for 10 years because Russian parliament made it illegal to surrender

The NATO move came after Russia gave support to separatist. Ukraine was desperate for support. They can't fight the Russian army alone. This whole conflict started actually because the Ukrainian people wanted to join the EU. This was a long process of 6 years when Ukraine signed the first agreement with the EU in 2008. Viktor Yanukovych the former president pulled out last minute after talks with Putin while he was telling how people all through his election and presidentcy he wanted to sign the EU deal. People got real mad and the rest is history.

It is true, just because countries are not democracies does not mean that they cannot have good government. The trouble with these is that with persistent power comes corruption and actions to ensure continuity of power, and lack of feedback ssystems such as free press, independent judicial systems to hold them to account and keep them true to doing the best for their people. For countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran etc. they view the citizens as being there to serve them. China has a better overview and insight into the issues with Ukraine, and will hopefully see what has happened as a warning about the strength of retaliation. Taiwan unlike Ukraine has been known to be important to the world because of semiconductors. Who knew Ukraine was so important to the world's food supply?
Semiconductors are the prize as well as the protection of Taiwan as if they were destroyed the prize would be lost, as well as potentially disrupting the world further. Taiwan does exist independently and has a complicated history but is not China. The US agreeing to give it to China after the war with Japan when the non-communist China leaders were in charge who fled to Taiwan, as the communist revolt took hold. Either way Taiwan should have the right to determine its own future. Nothing they have has been based on China.
